Lone Star or Leavenworth Lake KS 2024

fishing user avatarks cranker reply :

Anyone fished these lakes recently?  I've not been to either of them, but would like to go to them this weekend.  Any tips for a first timer at these lakes?  Thanks!

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

Thanks for posting this. I never new there was a  lake in Leavenworth.

Just reading the article about Leavenworth I'd fish some jigs, or frogs in the grass or find some chunk rock.

Never been there before but that is what I typically look for in any lake.  Maybe one day in the future we can go. 8-)

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

Leavenworth like any other lake can be a great lake. its worth a trip. i dont do well on lone-star. late fall is one of the few times i catch fish there. if you go to leavenworth be sure to hit the ends of the dam with plastics.

fishing user avatarks cranker reply :

Went to Leavenworth Lake on Sunday - had a good time got a few fish, but nothing spectacular :).  Going to try Lone Star this coming weekend.

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

Leavenworth lake is HOT right now. jigs and lipless cranks around the grass.

we didnt fish the bank in the outlined area much at all. also hit the over flow.

enjoy.

There use to be a bunch of brush piles about every 40 or 50 yards along the area you have circled.  They were in about 15' of water, probably 20 to 30 feet from the bank.  Are there still some smallies in there?

ive never caught smallies there.

it would be the perfect time though to take a kid out in that cove and let them just hook up for a few hours.

fishing user avatarBassLaw13 reply :

We're heading out that way tomorrow afternoon (June 24).  I'll let you know if we get into anything good.  I'll be looking for smallies!

fishing user avatarBassLaw13 reply :

We got rained out, obviously.  Oh well, next time...

fishing user avatarBusy reply :

There are a lot of small-mouth bass in this lake.  They seem to stay for the most part on the side of the lake that the road runs along.

I believe a lot of bass are starting to suspend but not yet schooled.

Off the rocky bluffs just east of the dam can be productive.

fishing user avatarks cranker reply :

Busy - what lake are you talking about with the smallmouth?

I've got smallmouth fever - thinking about going to Melvern this weekend to try and cure it... ;D

there was no lipless bait that seemed to work better than the others. if i had to choose one bait and one bait only it would be the Rattlin' Rapala 1/2 oz. color 03.

The post I made earlier was about the Leavenworth County lake that is off of Hwy 16.

There are smallmouth in that lake.  Someone posted a satellite image of this lake in this thread.  Fish the side of the lake that the road runs along where the piers are.  We seem to find largemouth out on the two main coves and smallmouth on the other side of the lake.

That said, I do not believe that this lake is a very good bass lake overall.  I think it is mainly known for its channel cats that seem to be everywhere.  Any type of bass caught in this lake must be 18"+ to keep.

It is a fun lake to fish mainly because you can catch anything you'd want.  Channel catfish, a few blue catfish there, wipers, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, and walleye.

i dont think you spend much time on that lake to be honest.

Skunked Again,

Is the Cedar Lake you were talking about located over near the Great Mall in Olathe?  It is in a small park and you can drive all the way along one side of the lake.  The opposite side is by Midwest Propeller.

If that is the lake you were talking about, are there any smallmouths in it?

Only about 4 days a week due to how close it is to me

Why don't you instead tell me how you might approach this lake or ask me about whatever I've said that you disagree with.

If I didn't fish this lake a lot I wouldn't be posting in this thread.

Thanks.

i posted a pic on how to fish the place at that time i was there. i think thats really clear as to how id fish the lake at that time. i was there all day thursday and they fish werent in the grass but we killed them running cranks into the sunken brush piles.

i assume that anyone who fishes this lake a lot wouldnt be stating wrong info. for kansas its a good bass lake. also, most of the time, including right now theres a 13-18 Slot on the bass. its been like that since march.

what do you call a good bass lake? lone star? its not a bad lake but theres places here (olathe) that are just as good. ive not fished leavenworth more than anyone else but i bet ive been on that lake 25 times this year. i bet i was on that lake 50 times last year. maybe the same before that. i only post what i know. ive never caught a smallmouth. doesnt mean theyre not in there but i assume that sooner or later you catch one here or there like a gar or a walleye.

the reason i take the time to download pics and detail them is because there arent "great" bass lakes in this part of kansas, only good and ok lakes. if you know a great lake myself and i assume a few other guys would like to know about it.

once more, any time youre around drop me a line, i fish a lot. ill make time.

Coffey County Lake - SM Bass

Banner Creek Resoirvoir - LM Bass

Cedar Bluff Reservoir - this lake holds large LM Bass and Wipers but not in great numbers

Woodson State Lake - huge channel catfish

Lake Wabaunsee (Eskridge Lake) - The biggest LM Bass in our area from what I can tell, this is my favorite lake to fish.  They also have good SM Bass.

These are my personal picks.  Most of these lakes are not that large.  Leavenworth isn't my any means a bad lake, I just don't think it's a great one.  It takes me about 10 minutes to get there so I'm out there a lot just to fish dawn and dusk for an hour or two at a time.  The smallmouth numbers I was catching 6-7 weeks ago has dropped off.  Last three weeks I've only caught a couple smallmouths, but they're still out there somewhere.  You circled an area of lake that has a lot of brush, smallies seem to like rocks and gravel more.

fishing user avatarks cranker reply :

I'll be at Leavenworth on Saturday.  If there are any smallmouth in the lake I'll find them and post a pic ;D

you know i dont want to debate the best waters. none of those lake listed are in this area. i can tell you that wolfe creek blows goats right now. that takes nothing away from the great bass lake that it can be much the same as leavenworth.

good luck to ppl fishing in this area. anyone whod like to hook up and fish drop me a line. i will be at cedar lake tonight so hook on to the boat and come on out, something should be biting.

fishing user avatarcodogs reply :

Hey folks, haven't posted in a while, mainly because I haven't fished in a while! ;D My 2 1/2 year old son and 6 week old daughter consume most of my time these days. With any luck I'll put on my fishing hat a little more next year.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is to ask Skunked_Again about Cedar lake. How's the bass fishing there these days? I probably haven't fished Cedar in 4 years, and have never put my boat on it. I was never really impressed with the results I got in the past, but then again it was all from the bank. Sounds like it might be worth checking out. I live in Gardner, so it's pretty close.

Also, regarding this thread itself, I've only fished Leavenworth once and thought it was a really nice bass lake. We caught a bunch, nothing big, but the numbers were good which in my opinion make it a pretty good bass lake for Kansas. The only thing that's kept me from going back is there are a few lakes closer that I like just as well.

I also like Lone Star, and have not only caught numbers there, but the quality (size) of the fish seemed to be bigger than what I caught out of Leavenworth. It's hard for me to make a fair comparison since I've only fished Leavenworth once, but I don't think you can go wrong on either lake from a LM bass perspective.

its a typical kansas lake. good one week, crappy the next. only caught around 10 fish tonight. i think its a good lake if you have a boat. the place is full of these:

fishing user avatarcodogs reply :

That's a nice little chunk.  If it's full of those, then it certainly looks like I need to put my boat on there.  10 in one evening is pretty good in my books.    Thanks.

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

not the best pic but a nice piglet from a Cedar.
