Kc Area, Help On Buying Boat 2024

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

My first find got sold out from underneath me. So Im looking again.

Thought about building a Roughneck. I know Blue has one and couple others I think. Wife said to just put a chunk down on a new if I wanted.

So tell me about building a Roughneck.

Also more eyes I have looking, better chance I could find another used gem. Got to be tin. 17' and less. Thats really all I wanna try to tow with current vehicle.

Thanks

Edit. I did find a Lowe Roughneck on CL. Anyone happen to know the boat?

I want to say thanks to Clayton for all the late night PMs back and forth answerung my questions. Makes work go by quick, eh??

thats a good deal if it is what he/she says it is.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Not too fond of the test drive/ride. And if he put all that money into it, youd figure he'd want to get a little more out of it.

fishing user avatarHi Salenity reply :

No problem, that boat may be worth a look

fishing user avatarsizzlefry reply :

my neighbor has a Cajun with 200 hp  in good condition for 5500

fishing user avatartritonguy reply :

Salenity what are you selling?

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Too heavy, sizzle. Gonna have to be aluminum.

Looking at one of the new Tracker Pro 165s. Has a decent motor and 5 year hull/motor warranty to boot. Like the rod storage for 7.5' rods as well

fishing user avatarDADAKOTA reply :

I would not buy a used boat that I did not test drive and have a boat mechanic go through.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

I know some boats come with a hour counter on the console. Any other way to check hrs on a motor?

how much selenity is your boat

fishing user avatarHi Salenity reply :

As it sets I'd like to get around $4500

I'd sell it without fish finders trolling motor and batteries if you want it cheaper

fishing user avatarWachati reply :

I will keep an eye and ear out.

I have the LOWE FM165, I bought it new at Cabelas 3 years ago and my monthly is under $200 with insurance. I had a 94 LOWE v hull prior and it was also a good boat. When its blowing like snot in 2-3 foot rollers I am glad to have the wide v hull. 24 gallon live well and 27 gallon fuel cell. Not that I ever put more than $15 a trip in the tank :) With 1/4 tank and all of Seans crap she will run 35 wide open 5500 rpms, cruise at 23 around 3800RPMS. There are enough of us with LOWE'S to know they make a solid boat!

Curtis will the $4500 even cover the union labor cost on the wood work?? ;)

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

At the moment. The prime suspect is a 06 Lowe Stinger 170. Looks like a great boat through pics Ive seen. Suppose to look at it today. But the seller had something come up. Rescheduling hopefully for saturday.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

Lowe Stingers are good boats.   I have a 2002 Lowe WF180,  which is a slightly wider and slightly longer version of that boat.  Mine is built like a tank and I smack it into submerged stumps all the time with no damage.  I like the heavy aluminum hull.  What I don't like are the longitudinal strakes on the outside of the boat.  These tend to catch stumps and channel your boat up on top of them if you aren't careful.  The same strakes help when you are up on plane and going from here to there at speed.  Your boat drives straighter and is less likely to skid out on sharp turns than a smooth hulled aluminum boat.  Pick your poison.

Most aluminum boats, if you want a depth finder on the console, will require that the transducer be mounted on the transom.  If you fish shallow, stumpy cover ( like I do, a lot) is isn't a matter of if you will tear up a transducer, but when.   Sooner or later it will happen.

Your choices are to A - just allow for that and know that every so often you will have to buy a new transducer or B - Get an Alumaducer from Vexilar than will allow you to shoot through your hull for your console mounted depth finder.  That is what I did - option B.

I had issues with the transom mounted  transducer, over and above the smashing it up one.  I couldn't get mine to read correctly once I was on plane for a couple minutes.   Maybe other guys have solved that issue but I couldn't.   The Alumaducer solved that problem for the most part.

Good luck finding a boat, take your time and get the right boat for your fishing tendencies.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Thanks FishinTrees, good info there. Exactly what I like reading.

As it stands. Meeting 8am in the morning to look. Then probably Wed for the leakdown.

Im gonna try to swing it where I can atleast pick up a couple new combos. A dedicated swimbait and Jerkbait setup.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

They also make transducer shields that you can mount on the back of your boat to protect a standard transducer. I have one, just need to get a replacement transducer after I broke the last one on a stump  :Idontknow:

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Shield is something thats on my list. Along with recessed TM Pedal tray

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Well went and looked. Im impressed. Little dusty. But in great condition. Almost no paint wore on prop. One small nick on it. Motor looks new. Couldnt find a scratch on the hull. I could tell where the bracing/frame was on the hull. Normal? Humminbird 937c Gps/sonar in bow. 45lb thrust 12v Motorguide. Optima blue top for TM.

Setting up appt for leakdown for a week from Sunday. MAN THIS IS DRAWN OUT!!!

There is a alum boat at Neil Spector motors in louisburg. I've never seen a boat there before, saw it on my way to work this morning. PM me your cell and ill text you pics this evening. It looked like a 16-17' with a mercury 40-50.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Pm sent.

Few more days left till the leakdown. Made appt to put a bigger ATF Cooler on the van. What its got is adequate to pull that 1800lb package. But, figured that a bigger capacity couldnt hurt.

Now is there a pedestal seat that will use the stock post?

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

Yes, you can probably get pedestal seat posts that will fit the standard Lowe fitting.  I got mine from BPS in 2002, shortly after I got my boat.   Go ahead and get the hydraulic one that you can adjust.  It is more comfortable and allows you to change your fishing position somewhat.
