Minn Kota's are your best friend if you fish lots of nasty grass. See a lot more Motor Guide shafts bend too.

Everyone I've ever talked to who owned a Motorguide says they wished they got a minn kota. Also, its been my experience that the MinnKota seems to be alot quiter when its running than the motorguides.

Way back when, during a time when there were more TM manufacturers in the market place, Motorguides had a really bad reputation for their steering cables breaking. Not to mention other little things. The motors just never seemed to be able to stand up to the abuse a bass fishermen could throw at it. Many of those guys switched and never looked back.

I was one of them.

I remember a commercial during the 70s that said 3 of the top 10 Pros use Minn Kota; the other 7 are paid not to.

Either one will be the best one if you have a problem with the other. From my travels, I see more Motor Guides in use than Minn Kotas.

Minn-Kota is my favorite. Made the change years ago and have never regretted it. Durability and blade design on their props allow me to fish grass that I would never be able to with a Motorguide. Never had a problem(Not one), and I abuse them a lot.

I've had bad experiences with motorguides just not having thesame power as minn-kota using the same lb. thrust. Plus, minn-kotas are much quieter.

I never had a Motor guide so I can't comment on them but I had 4 Minnkota's from being on 2 canoes my dad's pontoon boat to my 16' tri-hull. I beat the heck out of them from smacking rocks, weeds and bottoming out and never replaced props or bent the shaft.

Oh wait I just thought about my dad trashed his old one on the pontoon. It was his fault he left the motor down while putting his boat on the trailer. Needless to say it was bent in almost half >

My first boat had a minn kota on it and it was electric steer. I always had problems with the foot pad. I replaced it with a motor guide. It really worked well except I noticed it wasn't as guiet as the minn kota. I never had any problems out of it though. I'm on my third boat now and still using motor guide. The motor guide on my boat does have a flaw though. It won't run unless I have my foot on the pedal. I wish there was a way to make it run all the time. There are times when that feature is very useful. I couldn't vote for either one mainly because I've only owned one minn kota.

hated motorguide for years, always used a MK then I used a Tour series Didital motor by motor guide. that changed my mind. I bought a 109# 36 volt Motorguide Digital tour series and would not get rid of it for any other motor. I have had both brands. I do hate the PD MK. I have one and it is way to slow for me. will be selling it soon. I have many feinds with both motors. so like , some hate..

I do have friends that have Motorguide motors that are not Digital motors and all hate them. everyone that has a tour seies digital Motorguides loves them. the tour's do cost alot more $$ but in my mind worth it. also my motor has never gotten stuck in any grass/weed yet no matter how heavy.

You might want do check out the transom-mount 40lb Maxxum. It's got the 'digital maximizer' feature which from what i've read gives much longer runtime on the same battery.

My Motor Guide trolling motor blew up and I found out about it on October 17th when I was getting ready for a tournament.

It actually stopped on the way back to the Hope Springs Marina on the Potomac River but I thought the batteries went dead after 10 hours on the water.

Seems the wires in the 24-volt system burned up, a gear was damaged and there was other damage to the unit. Probably because I take the boat into grass and pads and give it a heavy workout when I use it.

This is the second time my Motor Guide trolling motor broke right before a tournament.

When I replace the Motor Guide I will get a Minn Kota.

The main reason I am keeping my Motor Guide is that I purchased the protoype of the Gator Spring Mount from the guy who invented it and the Motor Guide sits upon it beautifully.

But it will be Minn Kota for me in the future.

Hey guys,

One of my friends spoke with a Motor Guide rep and was told that the foot pedistal's grey foot switch has problems and it will break, sooner or later.

Mine broke last year and I had to have the switch replaced.

Just a word to the wise about Motor Guide.

Have owned 3 motor guide bow mounts and never once had a problem. Not sure on MK anymore, but all used to have those stupid junk composite shafts that would crack. Motorguide uses steel. Weeds are all in the prop and thrust. Both manufacturers make blades and thrusts that kill weeds. I have only owned 1 MK for a small boat of mine... at 54lb stern mount. And its the only motor ive had to get worked on... $125 to fix a gasket and electrical problem in lower unit. You basically have to buy a brand new shaft because the way they are set up can this problem cant be fixed.

I have no opinion of which one is better, but I would like to see the poll results. I have only used Minkota so am unqualified to vote. In order to see the results I am skewing the pole by one vote arbitrarily towards Motor Guide.

I bought a motorguide salt water series TM for my boat back in 93. It's still on the bow of my boat and running strong. Back then motorguide was the way to go but now I hear, from a lot of people, the minn kota's are the cream of the crop.
