new to trolling motor questions 2024

fishing user avatarjbmaine reply :

Hi All,

We'll be picking up our new boat in a few weeks, our first with a trolling motor ( ulterra ). I have read everything I can on using one and it seems pretty straight forward, however I could use some input on what are probably simple things I'm not sure of.

spare prop-- do all of you carry one ? I mean is it common to break these? Are they really so tender that any tree branch or gravel bar would snap it ?

Accessary grass cutter-- Up here in Maine I can see going thru lilly pads and some grass but nothing as bad as down south. I mean without one am I going to have to stop and untangle the motor every ten feet?

                                                                             Thanks

                                                                                     Jim

Minn Kota props are indestructible. I do carry extra shear pins.

Thanks, Do you know if the shear pins are specific to each model?

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

They are specific to the voltage of motor. The 24v pins are different than the 36v pins

fishing user avatarRenegadeBassin reply :

I run my prop through a ton of junk and its still fine. Being in Maine as well, I have never felt the need for any type of grass cutting blade on my fortrex.

fishing user avatarjbmaine reply :

Thanks everyone,

 I appreciate the input.

Never thought of this but it's a good idea. Where's the best place to get shear pins for a 80lbs. Ulterra?

fishing user avatarFurther North reply :

I've never broken a Minn Kota prop...but I've sure run plenty into rocs and things that chew up the edges...so I do carry a spare.

Conversly, while I've never proken a Minn Kota shear pin, I've bent one or three.  So I carry spares of those as well.

Stash a prop nut or two someplace you can find them.  You're gonna be PO'd if you drop the one you have in the lake.

There are not enough "+" symbols in the world to indicate how much I think you should get a weed cutter.  I was slow on the uptake here, just added them last year...night and day difference.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Just to add, you should keep extra shear pins because a bent shear pin will cause the prop to vibrate and be noisy.

fishing user avatar2tall79 reply :

I've never broken a prop but I watched helplessly as mine skipped across the top of the water and sank.  So yes, I carry a spare prop, washer, nut, and shear pins.

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

The number one, and this is a biggie, remember to lift and stow the trolling motor before running the big motor.  When I have someone with me, the first thing I tell them is to remind me to get the trolling motor out of the water before starting the big motor.  I assure them I will not be offended if they remind me the moment I say we are going to move.

A handy way to stow the shear pins is to use electrical tape and wrap two or three shear pins on the power cord where it comes out of the head of the trolling motor.

What weed cutter to you use?

What size is the nut and is it course or fine thread?

I use the Ninja Grass Blade, but have heard others work just fine.

Can't recall...I just pulled the nut, took it to the hardware store and grabbed some that were the same.  That was years ago.

2nd vote for the ninja grass blade. Super easy to install, doesn’t stick up a bunch from the motor and works great!

Will it work on an Ulterra?

fishing user avatarWay north bass guy reply :

I don’t see why it wouldn’t, works on my terrova and I’m sure it’ll work on pretty much any trolling motor out there.

Works great on an Ulterra.

I installed two, per their instructions, on my Ulterra 112.

Looks like floating salad after I go through a patch of weeds.  I create all kinds of habitat edges...

You glued it on?

They come with a very strong 3M adhesive strip.  Works as advertised.  Mine has been hot, cold, wet, dry and everything in between since last season.  Still there.

I read some of the reviews on the Ninja Blade and it says some tore off.....I wonder if they are using different tape now?

So you bought 2 of them for $60 because it seems when you buy them it's not a pair although I see you put 2 of them on.

Does any one know is sticking on a grass cutter affects the warranty on a new motor?

Grass Goat would be a nice touch. Works great through grass and pads.

Yes, go through the replacement of your trolling motor prop and have everything in a bag or a box. You can find the repair kits at your favorite tackle shop or where you purchased your boat and motor. You may also want to take a second pull cord in case the one you have on the motor fails.

I have not had any prop problems but I do have a history of bending the shaft so be careful.

Now go out there are catch some fish!!!!

A thought: I'd attribute any problem to user error...but I'm a simple guy...tend to RTFM...

$60 was cheap, for me, at my stage of life...I suspect one would work fine if $$$ are a challenge.

Don't see any way it possibly could...as long as you don't cut, drill or tap into the housing.  That'd be dumb, regardless...

Minn Kota had no problem honoring the warranty on my old Terrova 2 1/2 years into the deal, after I smacked it into an underwater rock and bent the prop shaft...even though I'd mounted an external transducer...which involved taking off and replacing the head, and gluing the transducer cable into the slot onthe shaft...

fishing user avatarlivemusic reply :

I second the notion... have an extra cord that you pull the troll motor up and out of the water with. And any attendant bolt or nut. It would be good to just have a little box with troll motor spare parts, labeled as such! Been there, done that.
