Need Some Help Rigging Up My Boat 2024

fishing user avatarJosh_Bovaird reply :

Well first off my name is Josh and I'm new to the site and have been lurking around for some time now.  I have a 2003 Triton v176 Magnum with a 115 Suzuki 4 stroke, love the boat but want to update it.  It has a Minn Kota Maxxum 65lb bow mount that the control board went on, I've wanted to upgrade for a little so instead of fixing it I'm debating between the Maxxum 80 or upgrading to a 36v system for the longer run times and extra juice.  Or should i fix this motor and buy a power pole.  Do you guys think its worth the extra 5-600 between motor and battery?  Now on to the fish finders I'm looking at the Humminbird 998 or 999 for the console, I want one up front but I'm not sure about funding for it right now.  How many of you guys turn your console screen around when up front.  Thanks for the help and input.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

I wouldn't do the 36v system on a tin. That's alot of weight with 4 batteries. A 80lb 24v system would be a good upgrade over the 65lb you had.

I have a 798 HD SI that I turn. If you wanted to, another base and transducer on the bow and just move the unit via quick disconnected RAM mount.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

You will be fine with the 80 in a 17ft boat. Longer run times can be achieved by using higher quality deep cycle batteries.

fishing user avatarAmarley reply :

Power poles all depend where you fish. I won't ever buy them because my boat positioning most of the year is in fairly deep water. If I fished okeechobee all the time they'd be top priority. Best upgrade in my opinion is in your electronics. Side scan, downscan and waypoints are game changers.

fishing user avatarKoofy Smacker reply :

Ive been doing this for a few years just continually adding stuff. First question to SERIOUSLY consider is honestly do you plan on having the boat for a long time. I ran into this and realized that the extra grand I was going to dump into a new item could just go towards getting a new boat in a few years.

If the answer is yes, then it is all preference. (I know thats not what your looking for). I run an HDS 7 Touch at the console with a different smaller unit up front not connected to eachother. Personally I found swiveling a unit to be such a pain that I wouldnt do it as I tend to run around a lot and it hurts after the day of craning your neck. Plus you have to realize the transducer is 18 feet behind you, not on the trolling motor.

I did add a Talon also. A lot of my fishing is 6 ft or less, and it has many more uses such as docking or loading, unloading yourself and I have found it very very valuable.

#1 is dont buy based on what others say you need. Everyone fishes different, evaluate your tendencies and see where the money is best spent

I plan on keeping this boat awhile, it was part of the deal selling my bass tracker to get it. I should have stated I love fishing shallow and that's why I wanted to stay aluminum and the power poles. I started fishing local tournaments and was thinking some size 31 batteries to get the job done all day, Hopefully. Is there gonna be a big difference between Advance auto size 31s that I can get for 100 each after 30% discount and the diehards for 230? Never been a deep kinda guy but try to fish everything. I think I'm sold on the 80lb minn kota, now to figure out my finders.

fishing user avatarJosh_Bovaird reply :

Does it help and pay off to run another unit at the bow. I was looking at the Humminbird 959 hd di. And maybe the 998 or 999 at the console. I've got around 3500 saved up for the boat, so I'm weighing my options and I know a lot of guys have been in my shoes before.

Are the Advanced Auto deep cycles marine rated and do they have an RC rating of 200 or more? The higher the RC rating, the longer the runtime. Walmart Everstart Maxx group 29's are $99 and have a 2 year warranty.

I had a 998si on the console and 858 on the bow. I changed out the 858 to a 1198si this year and couldn't be more pleased with the results.

FYI, Electronics can be purchased cheaper online than at the big box stores. universalmania, bbg, and threeriversmarine, are a few reputable places

don't waste ur money on a DI unit.  it's like looking at the bottom of the lake thru a pin hole. you have to criss-cross an area many times just to understand what the stucture looks like. with side imaging you only need one pass. just spend the extra 20% and buy SI....and have 180* panoramic vision

The advance batteries are rated at 210 or 220 RC and i was looking at the 1198 but don't I need to be going a certain speed for the si to work.  Im gonna have it at the console definitely.  And I've been shopping around a lot to find the best deal.  Im gonna head to bass pro in the morning after work to just check em out and see what one i like.

Power Pole?? (ancient history)

Take a real hard look at Minn Koto's 12-foot telescoping Talon, and notions of a Power Pole will likely dissipate.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Look at if you have room for the PP pumps too.

I was checking out the 12', I think it would be a lot more useful but I've read a lot about the older ones and was leaning towards the power pole.  But what info I can find on the 12' has me re thinking.

I'm not aware of any advantage to owning a Power Pole over a Talon (otherwise l'd own one)

I've been using an 8-ft Minn Kota Talon for the past several years, and don't have one negative thing to say.

Very recently I replaced the 8-ft Talon (and the boat) with a 12-ft telescoping Talon.

Unlike the grasshopper legs of a Power Pole, the Talon is a single-column pile-driver.

In water depths greater than 12 feet, the Spot-Lock feature on Minn Kota's electric motor does the job.

The Spot-Lock is guided by GPS and hold's your boat within 5-ft of your coordinate crossfix (any depth).

I was just reading some forums on them and was leaning toward power pole for the durably and quietness.  How do you like your 12' talon, there is not a lot of feedback out there yet?  I looked into the spot lock but I like the speed out of a cable style trolling motor.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Powerpoles are not without problems either. I bought an 8ft Talon after researching both brands of anchors. MK has worked the bugs out of the gen1 talons and brackets. Powerpole has as well. They both have pros and cons. I like the fact that the Talon is easily removable. If your Powerpole  breaks and you are unable or incapable of fixing it yourself, the boat goes into the shop rather than just dropping off the Talon. My final choice was based purely on price. I paid $1050.00for an 8 footer. Powerpole couldn't touch that price.

Speed?

Treadle cables and handheld remotes are just methods of deployment,

they have no bearing on boat speed, which is a product of ft-lb thrust and the number of banks.

Actually it's more involved than that, because a planing hull powered by an electric motor

behaves as a displacement hull, and all displacement hulls have a low terminal speed despite ft-lb thrust.

Durability

Power Pole was the first e-anchor on the market, and they exploited that advantage with Sticker-Shock (why not?).

However, when Minn Kota launched their 6-ft Talon, the punchbowl for Power Pole was taken away.

I've beat the stuffing out my 8-ft Talon for years, I've  motored off my spot several times

with the ram rod still anchored in the bottom. In spite of all my abuse, the Talon functioned with nary a glitch,

which I regard as good durability.

The 12-ft Talon I'm now using is still new, so it doesn't have the track record that the 8-footer had.

But this much I know, it deploys faster than the 8-footer, it's smoother and really sticks a landing.

Although it reaches 4 feet deeper than the 8-ft Talon, the upright housing is shorter and lower, thanks to four

telescoping sections. This is important to me because my boat is stored in a carport with low cross beams.

Noise

Noise?  Your outboard motor makes noise doesn't it?

After pressing the 'Down' button, the pile-driver makes bottom-contact in about 5 sec (varying with depth)

Therefore, if you anchor-down at 30 different waypoints during the fishing day,

your Talon will only be running a total of 5 minutes throughout the entire day.

It sounds like you really want a Power Pole, if that's the case, I would recommend that you buy a Power Pole

Roger thanks for the info, I'm gonna try to squeeze in a Talon if not I'm gonna go with a 12ft over winter.

Good point on just taking it off, I'm gonna order my fish finder tomorrow then decide on trolling motor or talon

That thing must fly with a 115 on it. I have a 16' thats only maxed out at 50hp. Best info I can offer is to buy the largest of everything you want to get. Wether its electronics screen, trolling motor etc. This way you won't have any regrets later.

It's definitely no slug that's for sure, with 2 guys and all our gear it will run at 55. I haven't had it to long yet so I'm not sure with just me and an empty boat.

fishing user avatarJosh_Bovaird reply :

Just got off the phone with tackle warehouse, they are a great company.  Ordered a Humminbird 999 combo with a ram mount and Navionics Premium to go with it.  Now debating on fixing the control board in my trolling motor vs buying a new 80# Maxxum or getting a 12' Talon.

fishing user avatarJosh_Bovaird reply :

Decided to just order the 80# Maxxum and sell my 65 to my partner.  Hopefully my parts come in from Suzuki soon so I can get the boat together and on the water.  Now to start saving for a Talon, my wife is gonna kill me soon haha.
