Should I be insecure about my boat size? 2025

fishing user avatarLonnie Clemens reply :

I called the security office at Lake Springfield to see about purchasing a registration sticker for my boat.  Talked to a woman named Mary Ann.  I asked her how much the sticker would cost.  She said, "How big is your boat?".  I said, "14 feet long", Mary Ann said, "Oh, you have a small one".  Okay, how big is your motor? She asked.  I said 9.9.  She said, "oh is that like a 10 h.p.  I said, ''yes it is".  Then she said, "That is a little one''.  Then I asked how much the charge would be.  Mary Ann said.  "not very much since yours is so small".  It ended up being $17.00 for a year.  Not bad for Lake Springfield, lol.

Now I have issues with my boat size.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

I've heard it said it's not so much the length of the boat, but the beam that makes for a better ride ???? Of course, you could always try and make up for boat length with bigger electronics...at least 10" (screens, that is) and preferably 12" ????

fishing user avatarGoldstar225 reply :

If your boat fulfills your needs, no.  But then again, if you're satisfied with your boat, why would you let comments by a paper pusher bother you?

That will show Mary Ann!

fishing user avatarTracker22 reply :

Tell Mary Ann “ it may be small but it will run all night”!

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

I always knew women really think size matters......

i believe girth is more important than length. ????

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

I think she was hitting on you @Lonnie Clemens. I would have played along and seen if you couldn't get that fee reduced. Bow-chicka-wow-wow.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

My response would have been, “Yeah it’s small, I don’t have to compensate for anything!”

fishing user avatarfrosty reply :

You should have invited her for a ride to show her that even though it’s small it’s still roomy!

fishing user avatarLonnie Clemens reply :

Thanks for the comments.  I appreciate it.

fishing user avatarjbmaine reply :

Fished out of a 14 ft. boat for years. Caught lots of nice fish. One of our favorite lakes has access only by going thru a culvert. Most larger boats won't try to made the fit. Often we have the lake to our selves. It's nice.

Next time you hear folks talking about needing a monster truck to tow their boat and burning up multiple gallons of gas per trip, you can just smile.

fishing user avatarLonnieP reply :

You should of told her it may be small but you know how to use it. ????

You are right!  I like jon boats.  Bigger boats are fine too.  But bigger boats have limitations.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

Size does matter.

My wife like it big...

that why she got Pontoon boat, she doesn't like my 14' Jonboat lol.

fishing user avatarGraham reply :

I hook up with plenty of big girls from my 12 footer ;).

fishing user avatarburr56 reply :

I was wondering which "lake springfield"you were refering to, not soringfield, missouri is it?

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

It's not the size of the boat in the fight.  It's the size of the fight in the boat that matters.

fishing user avatarOhheyCindy reply :

how is lake springfield? thinking of giving it a go this year.

fishing user avatarWay2slow reply :

Depends on how much common sense you have.  If you are one of these with tons of book smarts but can't tie your shoe laces without directions, then you have a reason to be concerned. If you have enough since to see what the weather is going to be like, realize 15mph winds can create white caps on large bodies of water big enough to sink a small jon, and to keep it off the big water and stay in the back waters you should be just fine.

fishing user avatarhaggard reply :

Think of it as finesse boating.

fishing user avatarshovelmouth83 reply :

i have my 14ft alumacraft and i have decked it so i can put a bow trolling motor on it. i love it and would take it over any thing bigger unless needed. i can get in and out of tight spots and places the big boats cant.

fishing user avatarWurming67 reply :

I fished out of a 12ft Jon boat with just a trolling motor for years and got in spots no one could and never saw anyone out there and I slayed them ,now I got a bigger bass boat and fish where everyone else does and all using the same baits, yes it's more comfortable and it's nice having gas motor but I fished areas where bass never even seen a lurer it was alot of fun.

fishing user avatarohboyitsrobby reply :

I fish out of a 16 foot procraft in tournaments and pretty good size water all the time. Do i run wtfo in whitecaps? No. Do i just hammer down at takeoff around a bunch of bigger boats risking getting swamped? No. Does it suit my needs fine and flat tick off the big expensive boats when I beat em??? Yep

fishing user avatartcbass reply :

You have to buy a big truck to make up for you small boat!

I’m picturing a Ford super duty, diesel, jacked up on at least 35’s, probably 1000 ft/lb of torque, just rolling coal cause the turbos cranked so high, pulling a 200 pound boat ????

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Yes, Mary Ann was right.

fishing user avatarNorthernBasser reply :

Mary Ann? Did you say...Mary Ann??

10'? Hummmm! I think 10" should be enough.

fishing user avatarpunch reply :

It aint the size that matters, it's how you use it!

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

!4ft? That's a whopper. Mines only 12ft, but it's a tight squeeze getting it in the garage.
