What do you think about this trade that I am about to make. I'm trading a new in the box Rossi 38 special w/ 75 rds of ammo and a holster. I have about $400 invested. I have no need for it b/c I bought something new. I'm getting a game fisher Jon boat he thinks it 8 feet, and a trolling motor. He says the Jon Boat is in good shape, the only thing is that the plywood on the transom needs replaced. He did not know what kind of trolling motor it was. He said that he inherited the set up when his grandmother passed away, and said it's only like 4 years old. But has not been used in 3. It's been under his deck for 3 years. Said the motor ran fine when he stored in his garage, but has not run it since. Question, is there any reason to believe that the motor need repair if it's been stored as he said. Any thing I should be concerned about. Is this a good trade.
Thanks
8' john boat is kinda small especially if there are other boats or wind/waves around. Don't bring all your gear either.
have you inspected the boat yourself yet? I would definitely look over it.. The other dude is the one making out on the deal.. He is trading a free boat for a 400 dollar gun.. have you checked your local craigslist? sometimes you can find jon boats pretty cheap..
If the plywood is shot already on the boat i would be a little weary if it was actually kept covered for all those years, and I would definitely make sure the motor is in good working order too before i pulled the trigger..
goodluck
Yes I have checked craigs list. There are some but there is a small problem. See, I have to do a trade. The reason I dont have any need for it anymore is because I purchased a new Springfield 9mm XD, but didnt get permission from management first aka the wife. LOL. She says that I cant spend any money on a boat. So in order for me to get a boat I had to find someone willing to trade. This guy was was willing to trade. He does not fish, and would rather have the gun. I would prefer to have a boat since I dont need the .38
Put it in the flea market section, never know
You could trade the wife for the boat, keep the guns, and live happily ever after. ;D
Shake the hook, dude. You're getting reeled in....
Sell the gun... then buy the boat.
I think I could probably get $325 if sell the gun. But then I'm limited. I have to find a boat and trolling motor for that price. This way, if the trolling motor is decent, I think I come out on top of this trade. Most jon boats on craigslist are going for $400 and up.
I would trade the wife. But I'm gonna need a bigger boat. The boobs are at least worth 5k.
Ok so he just sent me some pics.

The trolling motor is a gamefisher 14 lb thrust, and works fine. He just hooked it up. Has fwd and reverse.
What do you all think?
Goodluck..
Where are you going to be using it? Small pond, big lake?
I just want something for small private ponds. Something I can throw in the back of the truck. My buddies parents have a house on the warm side of lake anna in VA. We can use his pops bass boat when ever we want. When were there, it's on the lift. My wifes father has a 21 ft mako on the lift on the Mattoponi river near Williamsburg. So I have pretty good access to boats for bigger water. I just want somthing small so that we fish some small ponds in the area that get little pressure, but are not much access from the shore.
The 14 lb. motor should be OK then, I had one at one time, moved the 12 ft. boat good enough. Battery lasted all day easy. That boat looks bigger than 8', but maybe it's the picture.
He said he thought it was a 8 or 9. Wasnt 100% sure. It's not that big of a deal to me. If it were a little bigger, that would be ok too.
Even better!
i would let it pass, you can do much better than that.
For $400 or so you can get an 8' Bass Raider type boat, they are alot more stable than an 8'-10' Jon boat. Lighter and easier to transport too. Sell the gun and then save a few bucks and buy something decent. This "got to have it NOW" mentality will cost you more money in the long run. You never EVER EVER trade guns for junk..........it's almost the dumbest thing I have seen posted on here.
You can do better than this deal. I second farmers idea on the Bass Raider.
And your wife has a $5k chest but your not allowed to buy a $500 boat?
If the boat doesn't leak and you don't want the gun and the wife won't allow you to spend any more money , it's a no-brainer.
Check the boat and motor out before hand.Good luck.

hahahaha
She would have not minded that I bought a boat, except that 2 weeks ago I came home w/ a new gun that w/ ammo and everything was well over $500. I never discussed it w/ her and just kind of did it. This you could say is my punnishment. LOL
That boat and trolling motor is not worth it. If you keep a good watch on craigslist you can find a 12' jon boat for $200 and you can get a brand new trolling motor for $100 from bass pro (http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Prowler-T30/30-Trolling-Motor/product/98206/-1438525). For $300 you can have a better boat and trolling motor and still have money left over from selling the gun.
First off, thank you all for your oppinions. I have taken everything into consideration. I let the guy know that I'm going to try to sell the gun first. He was understanding, and said that he would still have the boat if I changed my mind. Thank you all for helping me to the right decision. I was not thinking clearly and got to excited when someone responed so quickly. And if anyone in VA wants a .38 spl. let me know.
Glad your were able to step back and evaluate the situation. It's always hard to do when you are looking at a new toy. I hope you end up with a rig you are happy with.
Best of luck!
It looks like it may be a 10 footer. If so I had the exact same boat back in the day. It was a decent little boat and easy to manage, tuff for two people though well I'm 6'4 220 and my uncle is 6'1 200 so we might have exceeded the capacity.
And there is no standing up in it or bringing a bunch of equipment. I ended up selling mine for $250 a while back with 30lb motorguide troller and battery.
I probably could have gotten more for mine but two of the stringers were cracked make sure you inspect them on that boat. Good luck dude.
**Update** I ended up purchasing a 10 aluminum Jon Boat w/ 2 swivel seats, 30 lb thrust Minn Kotta. $200, in good condition.
I just sold a 10 ft Jon boat with seats,a non running 4hp Chrysler Outboard and a Minn Kota 17# thrust TM. I had it up for $300 on CL,I kept getting offers of $200. Noone would even come close to what I was asking,so I just said screw it. I took the $200. If I had waited,I might have found someone to come close to what I was asking, but I just wanted the boat gone. Take the fact that I dont live real close to any large lakes,so the market for boats isnt exactly "hot" in this area. I had it listed for a week and maybe got 3 calls on it,even after I dropped the price from $300 to $225.

Id say it an 8ft boat easy. I just got rid of a 10ft that was bigger than what shows in those pics.

Ha Ha Ha Ha..................please don' let my wife catch me writing this.
