Bilge Smells Like Rotten Eggs. 2025

fishing user avatarmartintheduck reply :

This issue started maybe 2 weeks ago. The bilge area of my boat STINKS of rotten eggs. Had the boat for two years. Don't have a carport to put it under, so it does get water in it regularly and I always remove the plug for rain. What is causing this smell? I was charging the batteries today and one of the batteries was getting a bit warm and that worried me. Any input fellas? Many thanks!

Cheers!

Boat is a 2011 Xpress H18SS w/ a 150 Yamaha VMAX

Do you have a fishing partner who's a real a-hole?

fishing user avatarTodd2 reply :

You probably have a bad cell.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Yup, that's what it smells like..

fishing user avatarmartintheduck reply :

What does that mean?

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Get some rotten bacon and call it breakfast

Get your batteries checked.

Winner winner chicken dinner! You may have a bad cell causing the battery to boil, causing a sulfur smell from that battery.

fishing user avatarCrappiebasser reply :

That gas is explosive so make sure it's well ventilated. I agree it's a bad cell but it can be caused by over charging so check your charger before using on your new battery.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Sulpher.

You are smelling sulpher.

Coming from a battery.

Please do not take any chances and spend the money to replace your batteries.

I saw a battery blow up. It sounded like a grenade. The guy was jumping a car when it happened. He was covered with acid including his face and eyes. Be very careful especially if you have the battery on charge.

Time for new batteries!

I just replaced both trolling motor batteries 2 months ago and I replaced my cranking battery last season! Any pointers or direction? Could this be caused by, as CrappieBasser said, the charger?

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Yes it could be a defective charger.

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

It certainly could be a bad charger, if it's overcharging. Is it a 2 bank? 3 Bank?  Do you charge them separately with a single charger?

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Bad charger cooked the batteries

3 bank charger. Minn kota. how can i deduce if i need new batteries vs a new charger?

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

I believe that if you have the batteries load tested, a battery (the hot one most likely) will test bad.

And if you jump on youtube, there are a ton of videos showing how to test your charger with a volt meter.

Keep us posted.

AWESOME! Will start tracing stuff down tomorrow with voltmeter. Will keep y'all posted

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

There's a possibility that you might have just gotten a dud battery too. I'd still check the charger to see if that's causing it.

So I started charging the batteries today since draining them out Saturday in the tournament... I've been nervous to charge them since I found one battery getting hot during last charge. Well, after about an hour on the charger I checked the batteries and none of them were warm or hot, BUT --- The battery that got hot last time I charged had small was making a little air bubble around one of the reservoirs... like maybe the fluid inside was boiling or at least having some kind of reaction? None of the other batteries were doing this. Odd thing is I just bought these batteries brand new about 2 months ago. Think I should just remove this one battery that appears problematic and bring it back to Academy - tell them it's bad and see if they'll replace it. What do you think?

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Dude! Your battery is toast! Lol.. Replace it already...

Yep, I'd take it back and have them deal with it. I'd still check out your charger though to make sure you don't toast out the next one too.

So the charger is bad. Need a new one. I leveled off the fluid in the supposed "bad batteries," and hooked up my friends charger to one of them. Still getting bubbling and a rotten egg smell. Would a faulty charger have "fried" my batteries irreparably?

**My apologies for so many questions. I'm a complete novice when it comes to a large portion of electricity. Plus I'm trying to avoid pulling the batteries out the boat at all costs since it's a huge ordeal.... super tight squeeze and have to move the gas tank out of the way.... and it's a full 30 gallons at the moment.

yes

fishing user avatarSmokinal reply :

Yes x2. And ask away brother! That's what forums are for. It's good to learn how your systems work and to be able to diag and fix things yourself. None of us popped out knowing how to test an on-board charger.

Yep it certainly could. It's worth a quick test just to make sure it's working properly otherwise you'll end up having to pull the batteries out again when the next one goes bad.
