GG : Would be awesome if not for the tiniest spool ever
I’m so disappointed in this Bearking Zeus spinning reel. Not because it’s terrible, but because it’s excellent - except for the spool.
I’ve been fishing for 20+ years, and have had at least a dozen different spinning and baitcasting setups over the years, everything from entry-level combos to high-end reels and rods. I didn’t have high expectations for this Bearking reel - I mean it’s a no-name brand - but was very surprised at the quality. The materials and manufacturing are pretty high-end.
The reel body, handle, and reel foot are machined instead of cast, usually reserved for more expensive equipment. The anti-reverse has very little play (near-instantaneous) and the drag appears to be pretty high quality as well. The spool is machined, and the rotor has a very high-end feel to it.
The only cut corners I can identify are the ratcheting mechanism on the main shaft, which is a very thin piece of wire, and the bail kick (the mechanism that drops the bail when you turn the handle). It can take up to 3/4 of a turn of the rotor for the bail to drop, vs more expensive models that are near instantaneous.
So overall not a bad value - except for the @#$%@ spool. It’s very hard to tell from the product photos, and a little hard to tell from mine, but there is NO depth to the spool. It’s literally just the lip, and that’s it. Practically speaking, I’m not sure you could spool this reel with anything larger than 4-lb mono or 10-lb braid, and I’m not even sure you’d be able to get enough line on it even then. It’s bizarre - like it was designed by an engineer who had no clue what the spool was actually for, just what it should look like.
I’ve spooled mine with 10-lb braid, and if it took 80 yards I’d be shocked. I really, really want to like this reel, but they have GOT to fix this spool. My advice: for basically the same the money, you can buy a low- to mid-range model from a name brand like Diawa, Okuma, Abu Garcia, or Shimano. Forget the ball bearing count (marketing nonsense) and buy one of those instead. They basically all have instant anti-reverse and good drag systems these days, which are in my opinion the #1 requirement for a spinning reel.

MRM : A Real Smoothie
At this price point, this is a smooth reel. It's an Asian brand that is known for both reliability and affordability and this reel hits on both counts. Love the stainless steel ball bearings, which should allow it to hold up for a long time. Drag is sufficient too. Recommend.
D. Miller : Barely holds any line
Maybe I'm missing something here, but I've never had or seen a reel that is as shallow as this one. It holds probably a third or maybe 25% as much line as other reels. It seems smooth enough I guess, but not perfect, for a new reel. Maybe there's a reason this one is so shallow that experienced fisherman can explain or look for when buying reels. But for my purposes, I don't find that useful.

It's an excellent fishing reel. I can’t believe it’s so smooooth. I can’t even feel its weight when I am fishing. It’s really good for a new girl fisher. There is no doubt I will recommend it to my friends.
