Q:
Will a 20 pound turkey fit in and get lid closed?
Answer: Yes. Easily
Q:
Where is it manufactured?
Answer: Traeger manufactured the grills in the company's Oregon facilities until 2010, but started outsourcing manufacturing in China. In 2013, 240 people worked for Traeger with 120 in its headquarters in Oregon.Sep 10, 2019
Q:
What is the max temperature??
Answer: 450°F is currently the max temperature this grill can reach.
Q:
How is the surface finished? Powder coated? Heat resistant paint? Any issues with rust after a couple years?
Answer: Traeger builds their grills from materials such as cold-rolled steel and cast iron, ensuring durability and reliability. If they're properly cleaned and maintained, it can last for years. Also the Paint is heat resistant to high temperature and for the rust issues we would recommend to use a cover to protect paint against the elements which could cause the rust issues.
Q:

Answer: Yes, according to the guy who delivered it. But I love the thing so much I won’t return it.
Answer: No
Q:
Must you use Traeger pellets or can you use pellets from any manufacturer?
Answer: You can use any brand grill wood pellets with your Traeger, as long as they are "Food-Quality Pellets" and not "Home Heating Pellets".
Answer: You can use any brand of pellets
Answer: When I bought the Traeger, I went to get wood pellets and the store only carried Traeger pellets. So I haven’t used my grill enough to go through the original pellet purchase. I recently bought a bunch of bags of Brand X pellets b/c I know they will work just fine when I need that particular flavor of pellets.

Q:
Does this have a way to clean out the ash that accumulates at the bottom?
Answer: The best way we recommend to clean the ash build up is by vacuuming it out when the grill is completely cooled down.
Answer: Barely any ash accumulates but just use a shop vac to clean
Answer: No but it is simple... After about every 20 hours of use you just pull out the grate and grease pan and take a shop vac and sweep it out.
Answer: So you can open it up and vacuum it out. That being said it doesn’t really have ask permission say. When the pellets burn it’s not like charcoal they are totally gone

Product reviews of Traeger Grills Pro Series 780 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker with Alexa and WiFIRE Smart Home Technology, Bronze
Z Breeze : Best grill to buy if you already have a great grill for grilling. (This is a great smoker!)
Where to start. First off I’m an old school guy. So I’m not into automatic this wifi app that, plug in this, hook up that. Not normally. I can tell you I like real charcoal, in a cooker. The best I’ve found so far are american sized japanese kamado style cookers. My personal favorite is the Kamado Joe. Does everything and does it all as well or better than any specialty grill in any category. Flavor, heat, efficiency, versatility, temp stability, speed, etc., etc. You all get the picture. I’m die hard old school ceramic pot full of charcoal coals in a ceramic fire bowl with a way to dampen air flow and control heat, I’m happy. Ok. Now that we have that outta the way. (The part about me not needing anything to get my smoke on or achieve the absolute pinnacle of juicy smoky goodness, in case it somehow possibly can’t be obvious to anyone.) I feel like I needed to get that outta the way in order to establish a bit of credibility like i’m not just blowing smoke like one of these traeger fan boys. What I can say is this is the most precise, fast reacting, stable, most ludicrously simple and idiot-proof, hands-off operating smokers I’ve even seen. I mean I can literally go to work and control my smoker from work to within a few degrees (rarely off by more than 10° when it over-corrects after opening the smoker but it quickly gets back within 5° or so) at 5° increments. I gotta say. Been loving it. Spring for the shelf btw. Totally worth it. I must say, I gotta take off a quarter star for the hopper imtentionally being 18 lbs instead of 20 lbs like traeger and other wood pellet bags weigh. Trying to force us to buy the ironwood or timberline series or whatever. Not a cool move and not slick at all come on traeger, you’re losing cool points, corporate brahs. Anyways, yes this thing can let you know when your butts have reached the proper temp for your eastern carolina bbq and alert you and you can tell it to leave it warm or you can shut down the grill and tell your wife or whoever is home to get their butt off the…grill I still fire up the kamado for all grilling, all high temp baking, and some smoking, especially when I’m gonna be there all day and not too much else going on. Good quality time with me and the grill. But if it’s a madhouse and you’re in and out or plain old away, this thing is where it’s at. Get a Traeger not some Weber or Broil King or any other number of knockoffs. Why just to save a couple bucks especially one of these little knock off companies who may or may not be around later when you need spare parts, which these things by their nature do go through. You have to replace the pellet igniters and fire boxes and other parts eventually including fans and motors. I can already tell though. From my experience. This thing will last as long or as little time as you make it last by either taking care of it or neglecting it. It’s not one of those machines you can neglect unfortunately. I’ve already figured out much of the time you save and convenience you enjoy is completely offset by the pain in the ass of keeping her nice and clean and maintained properly so she will actually last and the components will last much longer. Pain in the butt. I mean it’s nothing too difficult or anything, just takes like 20 times longer than the 30 secs it’s takes me to clean one of my KJs and the other 30 secs to clean the grill itself and start topping her back up with fresh lump hardwood char gorgeousness. All in all, the Traeger Pro Series 780 is not gonna have be laying down as much smoke flavor as an old side-firebox style hardwood smoker (and definitely not a glazed ceramic kamado style charcoal smoker/grill/high temp oven, obviously) but it’s about 100x easier and simpler and better for beginners, and there’s nothing like kicking up your burn 5 or 20 degrees from your phone anywhere you service or wifi. Briskets, chicken breasts, boston butts, everything has had the most gorgeous, bright, healthy looking pink-to-red smoke line you’ve ever seen. Man oh man. The chicken breasts believe it or not would blow you away and I swear if i ever have to take a bite of one more boring or tough chicken breast trust me i get it. And you still would have flipped out just like I did. If you already have a good grill for grilling and need something easy and simple and wanna get into smoking meats the easiest way known to man, you found it. By the way, it sure does make things easy and convenient having 780 square inches of room, but most small and medium families will do just fine with the Traeger Pro 575 instead of the 780. Fire it up people let’s do it. One way or another however you gather your family around a fire and some food, get them together and show them how much you love them. The 780 makes it ridiculously easy my friends. Apologies for typos, I’m blaming it on my old eyes and sticking with that excuse.
Mike D. : Amazing product
This is an excellent smoker and produces mouth watering results. The item was packaged very well and easy to assemble. The wifire feature allows you to monitor you temp and lets you know when it has completed warm up or cool down. The recipes are really helpful, if you are considering this product I would encourage you to buy it.
One Reviewer : The Best Grill For Flavor, Ease of Use, Consistent Results, Huge Grilling Space and Togetherness
There is so much to say about the merits, ease of use and incredible flavor that can be found in grilling with this Traeger, I will do my best to keep this as short and reader-friendly as possible.
If you combine wood, fire, electricity, WiFi, and a passion for the best in outdoor grilling, smoking and baking, then you have the Traeger Pro 780 Grill. We have found that this grill is more than just a way to cook our food outdoors, oh, it’s so much more than that. With the Traeger Pro 780, one can not only grill on a huge, 780 square inches of total space that is divided between the main bottom grate and upper smaller grate, but also smoke, sear and bake. I won’t reiterate everything already listed in the product description, but this grilling wonder does not disappoint.
This is a very heavy piece of equipment, weighing in by itself at around 145 pounds, so it’s a 2 person job unless you are a very strong person. My husband had to move this to the basement where we assembled it. Assembly took around 1 hour and the directions were very clear and easy to follow. It comes with disposable bucket liners, and the grill box itself is made to be a fun little playhouse for the kiddos to color and play in, so cute.
It was getting dark when we had gotten all of our supplies and foods together to fire this grilling beauty up. I had asked my husband to pick up a few things to put on the grill, and he came home with more meats than we typically have in a whole week (I think he was as excited as me). We prepared various cuts of beef (2 London broil, 4 New York Strips, 5 sirloin tips), baked potatoes (12 potatoes) and around 2 pounds of salmon all at the same time. This grill is BBQ party and get-together-ready!
The integrated WiFi portion and app set up requires a few simple steps, and it’s important to set the grill up in good range of the WiFi (WIFIRE) to keep the signal to take advantage of this cool feature. I downloaded the app, set up a Traeger grill account, nicknamed my grill, and connected the grill with the QR code (found under the hopper lid) to simplify the process. While we love the convenience of this option, I must state we didn’t leave the grill alone, it was too exciting, and we loved the smell of the smoking wood pellets. It’s important to note that wood pellets are not included, I had purchased the Traeger Signature Blend, which worked wonderfully with everything we grilled.
Before one can begin grilling, it’s important to season the Traeger for the first firing. In short, you plug it in to an electrical outlet, add your pellets to the hopper, turn on the main power switch. Then, using the dial and looking at the LED menu screen, “Select Auger” then sub menu to “Prime Auger.” Let the pellets drop (automatically does) for a bit, then select “Done” to turn off the auger. To fire it up, press ignite, then close the lid. Using the dial and LED menu, you heat it up to 350 degrees for 20 minutes, then turn it up to 450 degrees for 30 minutes. After this is completed, it’s time to grill!
The beef was delicious, and had a just-right amount of sear and smokiness, while the salmon was perfectly cooked and so incredibly delectable, it was the best I’d ever had (I’ve eaten a lot of salmon) and we still talk about it. We are looking forward to making more very soon, it’s so good. Oh, and the baked potatoes were so easy to just pop in the top rack and bake away at the same time we were grilling the meat. We left the potatoes in longer, and they were terrific. There was no guesswork with the temperature of the grill, due to the LED reading that gives real-time temps and the built-in thermometer. Keeping the fire going is also easy, as the hopper feeds in the necessary amount of pellets when needed. The LED screen has a menu which makes everything so easy, it almost feels like cheating, and I love it.
The Traeger 780 Pro Grill brings grilling and smoking to a whole different level, and the deep, rich layers of flavor in our food reflects that. It makes the best grilled/smoked food that I’ve ever had, and the process of grilling and smoking is as simple and stress-free that I could ever imagine. Even our daughters have become grilling enthusiasts, and are researching the various wood pellets and flavors that they impart. This has become such a family affair, and our entire household has become Traeger fans, grilling just seems to bring people closer together. We are now proud members of Traeger Nation, this grill is amazing. Thank you for reading.
Jackie : Quality product
Quality looks great
Larry : WiFi doesn’t work
WiFi sucks (doesn’t work) and temperature range is very in accurate. I have the EERO Wi-Fi system and after several weeks of dealing with tech-support they just said it’s EERO fault that it won’t connect to the Wi-Fi. Well I like my Eero better than I like this Treger so the end; took it back.
Lets Talk : DON'T BUY TRAEGER!
If you want to feel serious buyers remorse, go ahead. Don't say I didn't try to warn you. Once you part with your hard earned dollars and find out its a "self service contract", in other words you fix it or fight to get someone and that they are junk from China and do not work, and you are out a thousand dollars, don't say I didn't warn you. I am that person, I have the most serious of serious buyer remorse. I'm out $1000 and I have no recourse. Bought this grill from ACE Hardware, don't go there either. They won't touch it, Traeger is not a good company any more. Don't be fooled by a name, there is no value in the Traeger, save yourself and heed the warning...don't, just don't buy it.
Zookeeper : Totally worth every penny.
Completely elevates your grilling/smoking to another level. The look on the faces of dinner guests is priceless!!
fparas : Traeger grill
Wow, great BBQ. Really juicy.
Kevin Trusty : Very nice smoker
This purchase was an upgrade for me. I originally purchased a tailgater model smoker about 3 years ago. The tail gater was a great unit but the 780 pro series is fantastic. It took me about an hour to assemble(by myself). I have had the smoker for 2 days and I have cooked in it twice. Great cooking experience
Hervian Rose : WIFIRE not ready for prime time.
The grill was delivered by a shipping company, not UPS, and that went pretty smoothly given that we are in an area with confusing, non-official addresses that don't show up when you google them. They delivered it to our front yard, then it started snowing so we decided to move it in the house, which was really not an easy task without a dolly. Make sure you have them deliver it to exactly where you want to assemble it. Once you have it assembled it rolls easily to wherever you want it.
It took about an hour to assemble it. The tools and hardware are in a bubble pack labeled very coherently, and there was the right amount of everything. Best in class. You really do need two people to assemble it both of whom are moderately strong and have no back problems. You have to flip it twice and there aren't any good places to hold on. Once you have it on its feet, everything goes quickly and easily. You will need 18 inches of clearance from the sides of the grill and 40 inches above. It's ready to plug in. The menu screen on the unit works fine. You can turn it on, set the temp, turn it off from there. We seasoned the grill, and that went fine, using just a few pellets. When we downloaded the Traegar app, that's where things got frustrating. My husband was never even able to create an account using his phone (android 9.1), and was not allowed to log in to mine. I had to download and delete several times before I could, then another couple before it would let me pair it. The grill is literally 4 feet from the router, through a window. Line of sight. Navagation is incoherent. After lots of trial and error I stumbled into the grill remote control (I still cannot figure out how I got there) but I am not able to control anything from the phone. It says ''grill idle, try later' or "grill sleeping" and I can't do anything else. It did work as a timer, and told me what the temperature was but I couldn't change anything from my phone. It disconnected me a few times out of the blue and randomly switched to Celsius once when I didn't even touch it. We have been messing with this for a week and are about ready to give it up. (WIFIRE, not the grill!) I am a tech failure but my husband is not at all, so I'm hoping they come up with some fixes soon. I gave the grill 9/5 stars but took off 5 for the WIFI debacle.
Amazon Customer : Amazing grill!
Best grill ever! Love the app! The flavor is absolutely amazing with little seasoning needed!
Daniel L Paulson : Traeger's Are The Best For Outdoor Cooking
The new Traeger heats to a higher temp than our older unit. The control p[anel is much morfe advanced and allows you to do so much more and I love the WiFi app for showing the status of the grill and change temp on the phone if needed. Recommend Traeger tp a;; our friends.
Bean01 : Poor Product Support from Traeger
I purchased a 575 Pro from Fleet Plummer in Greensboro, NC in August 2020. It worked flawlessly and the WiFi connected the first time and every time when I had it on my AT&T Uverse router with 5G. I sold my 575 Pro and wanted a larger grill so I purchased a 780 Pro from the same store and have had it 8 days and still cannot connect to the WiFi. I’ve contacted Traeger customer service several times which is horrible. They said it is because I have 5G instead of 2.4 which I call BS because my 575 Pro connected every time all the time. On day 7, I had AT&T set the router up on 2.4 for my 780 Pro and 5G for my Apple products and smart tv. The grill still cannot connect even with the grill inside my house 12 feet from the router with a booster the technician installed last night due to a “weak” signal error message on the Traeger app. I’ve kept the grill on for 48 hours trying to update to the latest firmware and still hasn’t updated nor connected to WiFi . If Traeger cannot send me another controller with the updated firmware then I’m taking the grill back and getting my money back. This is ridiculous. I would have expected better product support from Traeger. I can’t imagine if something else goes out and I try to get parts from Traeger. NOT HAPPY WITH TRAEGER
Bahamasair : Not reliable
I used the grill 5 times and the fan failed. Used tech support and now have to wait 7 business days for them to process the replacement before they will even ship it. I had a bunch of plans to cook over Christmas but won’t be able to use this expensive pos. Buy another grill! Things fail but good support is what makes a good company.
Dave Wilson : Best grill I’ve ever used.
Best grill I’ve ever used. Be sure to clean out the firebox regularly for best performance. Extremely easy to use with exceptional flavor.
Clate H : Do not waste your money or time...
When it actually works, it has a great flavor and I was very happy at first. I used it fewer than 10 times and the control panel stopped working. Traeger sent me a new control panel, I installed and it will not ignite. I then replaced the hot rod as instructed, it still will not ignite. I have never bought something that was so highly rated that turned out to be a total piece of garbage. I have a $1,000 grill that does not work and they will not replace it, but will tell you to try this or that, without success. After many attempts at getting the thing to work, I am beyond disappointed in traeger’s product and a warranty that’s none existent. It’s going in the trash or better yet maybe, I can use it for target practice with 5lbs of tannerite attached to it. Absolutely worst purchase, I have ever made.
The new Traeger Pro 780 grill measures 48.7 x 26.7 x 54.4 inches and weighs approximately 145 pounds. It being winter here in Tennessee we had to put it together in the family room. Everything you need is in the box-- the instructions are well written, easy to understand and simple to follow. Assembly took about an hour - start to finish. As always the grandkids wanted to play with the big box -- the cool part is this box has an imprint inside for them to color. They have had a lot of fun with that.
This grill is equipped with "WiFIRE" which allows you to monitor and adjust the grill using the Traeger app. We downloaded the app, set-up a new account, and it paired on the first try. We finally had a clear afternoon so we moved the grill outside onto the patio,-- cleaned, seasoned, and re-cleaned the grill. Unable to find Traeger Pellets at the local grocery store, we purchased a different brand. We think (hope) this may be the cause of the disappointing results. The flavor was not what we expected. It had barely any flavor and only the slightest. . .slightest hint of smoke. So we ordered two bags of the pellets recommended by the manufacturer, in our favorites -- apple and maple. Now we just need a clear day.
This bronze pellet grill looks like the 'Cadillac-of-smokers.' To say it is pretty may not sound exactly right -- but it is pretty. It looks nice sitting on the patio. It definitely requires two able-bodied people to maneuver the box. Once assembled it rolls smoothly and is easily moved. The 780 is sturdy and well built. Some may find the WiFire helpful, especially for quick checks on the temperature. If you enjoy smoking various entrees this could be the grill for you.
*Once the weather gives us an opportunity to grill, I will update this review with our results using Traeger Pellets.
UPDATE -- UPDATE: Using the "recommended" Traeger Pellets did not improve the flavor of the food. Maybe it is our family -- maybe we simply do not like pellet cooked food. Again the food had a faint hint of smoke and I mean faint. Also just like with the store brand pellets the flavor profile wasn't there. We were very disappointed. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes -- which is why there are so many choices and options available in grilling. We love to grill and do so year round. . .but the Traegar 780 just isn't for us --

Patti Hays : Delivery, instructions and assembly
First of all, we were blown away with the quick delivery. Our first with an amazon contractor, and they were courteous and treated our merchandise with care. Now, we haven’t cooked with our new pellet grill as yet, but wanted to get a head start on reviewing the initial unpackaging and assembly. We have truly never seen anything packaged with such care! It is extremely obvious that Traeger did its utmost best to ensure no parts are damaged or marred. If you have little ones, have them ready with crayons...there is a wonderful surprise waiting for them when this grill gets unboxed. Important note-the instructions recommend unpacking and assembling with a buddy. Speaking of instructions, this company deserves five stars just for the instructions! Not only is it humorous, but the assembly is a neat freaks dream come true using every trick in the book to never have a consumer say “ rocket science needed to assemble”. I almost feel as though assembling one of these grills is a complete family event and entertaining for all participants. Of course, we will update this review when we finally cook with it, and we are truly looking forward to using all its bells and whistles such as the remote monitoring, the constant temperature adjusting it does for you, the self feeding pellet hopper and the wine bottle uncorking...just kidding ! From speaking to a current user of a Traeger grill, we should be looking forward to the best temperature control we ever used as well as the nice even Smokey taste. If this grill lives up to its reputation, then everyone needs to start socking away for gift giving this coming fathers (or mother’s) day!
AmazonShopper : Perfect smoker/bbq
Early Christmas gift for my daughter and family. They have used is every day since it arrived!
Parents of 3 young boys : Highest quality grill I’ve ever experienced!
The first obstacle in assembly was finding some parts that were damaged, but customer service was good at getting out replacement parts. Assembly was straightforward after that. The features are great - you can adjust grill and probe temperature right from the app - no need to even go outside! The app also has recipes etc. The grill cooks very well and evenly. When using recipes, the times and temperatures are spot-on, regardless if it’s vegetables or meat. You need pellets - a pack of pellets lasts a couple of cooks, although it is very dependent on cook-time (some cooktimes are short while others are long). The grill also looks pretty sharp! The only deduction I made was value - this grill is absolutely the highest quality I’ve ever experienced, but that said you could probably find something very nice for a couple hundred or so less. It just depends on whether you have $1000 to spend on a grill.
Angela T. : Awesome product
I purchased this in September 2020 currently March 2021. I have alway used a propane grill and a big real log smoker. This new Traeger grill does it all and more. Easy set up, easy to use, grill, bake, smoke. If you want more smoke just get you 1 o 2 extra canisters to place inside and your good to go.
Amazon Customer : Total waste of money.. am returning
This grill/smoker does not ljve up to the hype. Truley an overpriced under performing smoker. Day one... tri-tip, tasted like the seasoning but no smoke flavor. Day two.... whole chicken not seasoned becuase I wanted nothing but smoke flavor. No smoke flavor was accomplished, no smoke ring on the chicken meat. We are currently smoking a unseasoned pork butt for almost 8 hours to give this Grill one last shot. I am not optimistic.
Jesse : Amazing smoker and doubles as an oven ! Great craftsmanship!
I love the traeger ! It's absolutely amazing ! Works perfectly , and did you know that you can bake and cook dishes inside the traeger ? On hot days you can bake a casserole on the patio and not heat up your kitchen ! The only thing to take into consideration before buying a smoker , to use as a smoker is the fact that it does have a strong smell . So if you live in an apartment you may need to find out if this is allowed . Great results with this , and is a year round dinner game changer !
Liz : Coolest thing since sliced bread
I kid you not, this gets more use than our stove. Longest smoke to date has been 13 hours, and we even made an apple pie on it. Almost too easy to regulate with the app on your phone.
Vinnie : No flavor
I bought a Traeger for their “Hardwood fire flavor” and their is absolutely no smoke flavor to anything. The food tastes like it’s out of a propane grill. Big waste of $1060.00.
Clate H : Do not waste your money or time...

Angie : Top quality, looks fantastic
Assembly was very easy- really just consisted of putting the legs, handles and chimney on. Much easier than any other grills I have assembled. All tools necessary for assembly are supplied, instructions are ‘Ikea style' but clear and easy to follow. Even though it says it needs 2 people to assemble, this is possible for just 1 average strength person. It took about an hour to put together. There is a ton of packaging though all of the packaging is cardboard so it is recyclable, BIG PLUS FOR ME (no styrophone) and only a couple of plastic bags and straps. Many parts are stored inside the body of the grill so make sure you have located all the parts and separated them from the packaging. Be careful during assembly because some of the sheet metal parts have sharp edges. The grill is very sturdy and attractive, good quality, and well designed and well made. You have to season it but instructions are straight forward and it takes about an hour to do this. We had issues connecting the app to the grill by WiFi and found this is a known issue with mesh systems. We were able to connect it in the end after some updates went through. We absolutely love this grill, so stylish, and it feels like it will outlive me.
Erik Cardenas : Great Pellet Grill
Set and forget it. Wish there was a super smoker mode on this model especially for the price but the flavor is still pretty good.
M. L. Asselin : Beautiful, Solidly-Built Grill that Takes a Bit of Effort to Assemble
The weather is only now starting to get nice in my area. So I haven’t yet tried out the Traeger TFB78GZE Pro Series 780 Pellet Bronze Grill and Smoker. This review will focus on the assembly, and I’ll return at a later date with any comments about the use of the grill.
I’m not a handyman, so any large box promising hours of fun assembling something is a task I’m likely to procrastinate on; I still have nightmares twenty years later about assembling my daughter’s crib. And this is a big, heavy box. Once I did open it up, I noticed how nicely organized all the parts were. The company put real thought into carefully packing this grill; it was an aesthetically pleasing start to the process. Of course, at this point, I was literally admiring the problem.
The box includes not just all the parts, but all the tools you will need. You don’t need to worry about sacrificing fingers freeing parts and tools from the packaging: everything is accessible through perforated cardboard backing. The instructions are IKEA-like clear, which is to say, not very clear at all, but the parts are well labeled. The time given for completing the work is depicted in illustrations as progress through a six-pack, which is cute if perhaps inadvisable to actually put into practice. Of all the parts and tools, the wrench is the least well made; you might want to use your own.
Assembling the grill is not difficult conceptually, even for this non-handyman. The legs require turning the grill over, and that is the only part of the process that requires two people. This is a really heavy instrument. Fixing the legs to the chassis takes a little more time and elbow grease than one might think. As you tighten one bolt, another loosens up, so you’re constantly going back-and-forth, and, as I noted above, the wrench leaves something to be desired.
The entire project took a little over two hours. The grill is sturdy and feels solid. The appearance is handsome and striking. I look forward to trying it out!
D Webb : Smoker phenomenal ,, Delivery Ehhhhh
ABSOLUTELY everything about the Traeger Smoker itself was above expectations.. It’s the delivery that I was disappointed in when ordering the delivery date I had picked disappeared then said would get notified when shipped then waited a week had to call and complain then shipped the next day with a agreed del. and then gat delayed again by a day. HIGHLY recommend putting together with a six pack as recommended in instructions
Mike Nicholl : Enjoying Wood Fired Cooling
I have really enjoyed my Traeger wood fired grill. The product is well packaged and arrived without any damage. Instructions for assembly were straightforward and easy (although you need to likely have.a second person to help with lifting due to the size/weight). It has taken a bit of time to learn how to best cook without direct flame as this is quite a difference for traditional grilling using gas or charcoal. The grills ability to maintain the temperature desired by decreasing/increasing the pellet feed into the fire pot makes for some pretty accurate cooking, Learning the best temperature and time for beef, pork, chicken, etc. is a learning curve but their is a great app with a number of recipes and actual videos of experienced Traeger chefs doing their thing. I've now made complete meals in the grill including protein, potatoes and homemade cornbread without needing to return to the kitchen. Really terrific product that I will enjoy for years to come.

My husband is in love. And now he cooks ;:)

Great product. My son enjoys it almost every weekend.

AC : Came Damaged, but Customer Service was Great
This is one heavy item, and unfortunately, ours came badly damaged. Customer service was great, and after a while, we got a replacement and were able to have the damaged one picked up.
Overall, the Traeger is great, but there are a few things to be aware of:
--Assembly-- This does require a bit of assembly, and two people to lift. No way around that, you'll need a second person to help tilting the Traeger up once you've got it assembled, so plan on having someone help with that.
Remember to remove the protective cap over the temperature gauge. I almost forgot before using!
Match stickers on the same side of the legs, but also be aware of which side the bolts go on. I had to undo one where I wasn't paying attention to the direction. Nice to have them all match.
The grill tray has a big paper decal stuck to it. Literally stuck to it. I didn't like the glue that was left on the grates, and the glue did not come off. Traeger should fix that.
There is oil/grease on the drip tray, and fire pit cover. There should be a little note mentioning that's by design (I'm assuming it is). The instructions say to season the grill and to burn off some of the oils on it, but there was enough that it was dripping on the fire pit cover that I wondered if it was a mistake. It'll make your hands oily to touch so wash before you touch anything else on the traeger.
The nuts and bolts were well labeled, and although there were a lot of steps, assembly was fairly easy. Save the box parts to help lay the Traeger on its side so it doesn't get scratched.
The inside design of the box is cute. You'll see, and the little ones will enjoy.
-- Smokin Hot --
Cooking with the Traeger is lots of fun. The aroma of wood fire cooking is simply amazing. If you're looking at a smoker, then you're probably familiar with it, but it sure is fun to have it in your own back yard.
With how great it is, there are a few things to consider.
- You might need an extension cord. The included power cord (and yes, it does require power to run), isn't very long.
- This really needs a shelf. I'll go out to the Traeger with food on a plate, but there's no where to sit it. I could sit it on top of the hopper, but it's not designed for that, and I'd rather not get it dirty. They have shelves you can buy, but it seems like it should be part of the design.
- No storage. Our gas grill has a nice little storage area with doors that can open under the grill. The Traeger doesn't have this. Maybe they don't want you storing pellets below, so close to the barrel. However, you can buy a bottom rack/shelf that hooks on between the wheels, but it seems like for the price, it should come with that. Not a huge deal, but it's expensive if you want to buy the add-on wheel shelf.
- Can't use a metal grill scraper. Instructions on the website say not to use a metal scraper to clean the grating. Wish that was more prominent in the instructions. I guess it'll scrap the porcelain or enamel right off the grill. Use a nylon scrapper (when it's cold) or a wood scraper. Traeger sell a wood scraper, but it not compatible with this smoker, at least as of this writing, it doesn't list the 780. The wood scraper is made to fit between the grate bars, but apparently, it's not made for the 780.
- Ignition switch. The ignition button needs work. It's a button covered over by the panel material, and I can see the thin panel material breaking over that in time. The button cover really needs some work to make it feel more solid.
- Ignition time. It takes some time to get this puppy fired up, especially on first use. Don't worry, it'll get there.
- Cook times on ours seem to take longer than they should. Maybe that's just because it's not super hot out yet, but plan accordingly. We've tried meats and baked goods, pizza on a pizza stone, mac and cheese, mmmm. It does seem to take a little longer than it should and we found on the pizza that it doesn't brown up the crust, maybe we'll get better at it as we go.
- There is a shutdown cycle can take 25 minutes to complete.
- You'll need to fork out $70 if you want the Traeger cover. Seems like the cover should be included, but it's not. At $70, the cover better be able to super charge the thing or something. So be aware of the extra things you may need to get (nylon or wood scraper, cover, buckets to store pellets - the instructions say not to store pellets in their bag to keep moisture from seeping in).
-- Overall ---
Overall, it's a great smoker with a few quirks as mentioned, but the food tastes great out of it.
Mike Nicholl : Enjoying Wood Fired Cooling
I have really enjoyed my Traeger wood fired grill. The product is well packaged and arrived without any damage. This is our first pellet grill and we absolutely love using it. The grill ships packaged very well and wasn’t difficult to assemble. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and all hardware required for assembly is included. No extra tools are required. Assembly will almost certainly require two people. The grill is not only very heavy but cumbersome due to the dimensions and protruding hopper. Assembly is much, much easier with two people.
An accessible electrical outlet is required for the hopper and wifire system and the grill should be positioned within sufficient range of wifi. The grill can be controlled via a hardware control panel on the hopper or smartphone app. The control panel is simple and intuitive to operate. It has minimal buttons and a large clear LCD screen. The app was a little more difficult to setup and it took numerous attempts and even a restart of the grill before it successfully connected to wifi. It can also lose sync if the grill is unplugged. I found whenever the app acts up, even when it loses the account and/or grill info, a few full restarts of the app usually restores it.
Having never used a pellet grill before, I quickly found out that they aren’t as easy or efficient to use as gas or charcoal. First, the grill must be seasoned by priming the auger before first use. It’s a lengthy three step process that can easily take anywhere from 90-120 minutes to complete depending on how fast the grill heats. The instructions provide crystal clear steps on how to season the grill. If the grill is immediately connected to the app and wifi, a firmware update is a strong possibility as well. I suggest either seasoning the grill on a day you don’t plan to barbecue or doing so earlier in the day so it doesn’t delay cooking. Another difference is the pre-heat time. Unlike gas or charcoal, it takes a while for this grill to even ignite, let alone heat up. It heats more like a convention oven than an outdoor grill. Full pre-heat to 400 degrees usually takes about 20-30 minutes. That includes ignition and actual preheat time. Co
Cooking is where the biggest differences between this Traeger and my prior gas and charcoal grills were observed. This Traeger pellet grill cooks more like a traditional oven than a typical BBQ grill. It cooks slow and evenly using a closely regulated and maintained temperature. The pellets allow for very accurate temperature regulation during cooking. As a result, although it cooks slower than gas this grill requires far less attention and interaction during cooking than my previous gas grills. Rather than constantly flipping scorched meat, frequently adjusting burner temperatures and occasionally extinguishing grease fires, I just set it and forget it. I only monitor the food as part of the normal cooking process rather than to also prevent a grilling mishap.
I’ll admit, having never grilled on a pellet grill before, I was curious and even a little apprehensive about how our food would taste. That concern was quickly and definitively put to rest. Everything we cooked, which included ribs, hot dogs and burgers, tasted great. The slower cooking prevented some of the issues commonly found with gas and charcoal grills. There were no scorched or unevenly cooked foods. The burgers were all tender and juicy with no frozen or burnt portions. The ribs were also juicy and fell off the bone. Everything had a freshly grilled flavor. I see that there are different types of pellets that can enhance the flavor of food in different ways. I may experiment with different pellets down the road but for now we just use the Traeger signature blend pellets.
Shutdown is also different and more time consuming than a gas grill. Pushing the select knob for three seconds initiates the power down process. The power down takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and the progress is shown on the LCD. The grill should remain connected to power during the process. It’s suggested that any remaining pellets in the hopper be cleared once the grill powers down. Cleanup is a breeze. The metal grease bucket includes two disposable foil inner buckets. These can either be emptied or replaced after use. Besides the bucket, I removed the two grills and the grease catcher for separate washing. The last task was to wipe any grease splatter from the interior. Cleanup is far easier and less messy than either gas or charcoal.
Overall, we like this Traeger. It’s easy and even fun to use as well as a breeze to clean. A 20-pound bag of pellets typically lasts us for three or four heavy uses. A grill cover is basically mandatory to protect the electronics. Speaking of which, I probably will store this grill indoors during the winter as an extra measure of protection from snow and ice but that likely is unnecessary. I tend to lean toward being overly cautious. There is a very slight learning curve for those like me who have never used a pellet grill before but nothing too difficult for most newbies to easily grasp.
