Product reviews of Kalex XL3 Baitcast Low Profile Fishing Reel
Nelson Gittens : Fishing
Best reel best price
Chris : Surprised for sure
Well, I won't lie and pretend I had high expextufir this reel. But man has it performed well. So well that I intend to purchase a few more. I bought it thinking if it wasn't good, no big loss. Instead I've been more than impressed. Kudos.
scott storey : Great value!
Just got this reel two days ago and I paired it up with the $20 Legacy rod (academy sports) brand And lined it with 15 pound R-line fluoroclear. It cast very smooth and reels very smooth, and is quiet. Caught six bass with it yesterday including a five pounder. Absolutely no complaints for only $22.
Brandi Haley : Good value
Took a gamble on this one, the price was right. I was pleasantly surprised, it cast really good, and the action is very smooth. The only issue I have noticed, is the drag has to be set tight, it’s all or nothing. I haven’t run into a position where that was an issue. Great for a starter, or loaner. Good value.
Steve : Durable
Great product
katrina billings : Price jumped $40 and wasn't on sale
I Purchased this real March 8 2021 For $21 and some change to make a first Bait casting set up For my friend. For $21 it was worth it for sure especially if you are looking to get into baitcasting on a budget, it casts decent, reel is smooth, not the greatest but it would get the job done and have fun doing it. The thing is that didn't say it was on sale or nothing but for $63 I'd stay far away get a kastking For $45 Far superior. I wouldn't pay more than $30 for this reel. I hope this helps anyone looking at this product.
Christina Breuker : Great buy!
Bought this as a gift for my husband and hey says it works great!!!
MarkJodi : Great baitcast reel
Very smooth casting and retrieve. Push the blue K to open side cover to remove spool. Lightweight, sleek, and price point is good. Overall great product.
Bryan Pelekoudas : If it doesnt work its user error
Works just as good or better than multiple Abu garcias and shimanos ive had, its much cheaper too
Sophie : Worried about this $20 reel being the real deal? Don’t be
I’ve always used spinning equipment, pretty much exclusively Shimano (my go-to reel is a 25-year old Spirex that fishes as well today as it did the afternoon I bought it). But I’ve been fascinated by baitcasting lately, so I bought this reel and another on amazon - a FibLink - as well as two Daiwa Sweepfire rods so my 18-year-old son and I could chase bass at our nearby lake with a new approach. I was a little skeptical of both reels given their price points, but holy crap, they’re both really nice. Done some dry casting with each today and they’re both super smooth. The Kalex came nicely packaged and was pretty sweet right out of box. So was the FibLink. If you’re not hung up on brands and are thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these, go for it. I will try them both out later this week and will post back if there are any issues in retrieve with fish on the line, which we’ll certainly have.

Lorien : Good product
Drag is only problem
Seth : Complete junk...
Bought one, worked great for several months, Bought 2 other ones and 1 locked up within a few uses and the other one was malfunctioning the first time I used it.....save and buy a premium baitcaster trust me
Jessie : Not worth the money
The drag is awful.
Rhianna : Deal at $20..... but you can find better
It's a good deal when found on sale but it definitely has it's issues. These have to be the worst brakes I've ever felt! Anything under 7 is guaranteed backlash. Tension knob is decent but without a good brake this thing is hard to cast. I own couple Abu garcia, ugly stick and Shakespeare baitcasters as well as a really cheap $17 fishk Amazon baitcaster. This one is definitely bottom of the list very disappointing. If this is reel fishing company then they don't have the same quality as it's sister companies. At the time of this review price went up to $60
Hawaiian808 : Very good value
Great value for person like me wanting introduction to a baitcast reel. After much practice and getting reel dialed in I am very impressed with it. Absolutely worth the small price paid for it. Recommended
Kspencer : Good little real_compact
Had some problem casting. Until you get use to cast with this type, you will need some practice. Had an open face prior to this. Doesn’t seem to cast as far as my open face real.
MarkJodi : Great baitcast reel
Very smooth casting and retrieve. Push the blue K to open side cover to remove spool. Lightweight, sleek, and price point is good. Overall great product.
Michelle : Same as abu Silvermax !!!
Good reel for the price ...smooth have 3 of them I also recommend the xl2 and xl4 kalex has become my go to for baitcast reels since I am a budget angler...
Rich Gray : Good buy for the money.
Mine is smooth, casts good and I have used it on several successful fishing trips. Great bang for the buck.

Adam : Good Reel
To be quite honest, this reel is a surprising value for the money. I started out today and caught 3 bass on it, 2 of which were over 2 pounds and it had no issues. I am used to $100+ reels, I have a concept Z, slx 150dc, and quite a few more, not meaning to brag or anything, and this reel felt surprising good. I was going to buy it as a joke, and ended up liking it a lot. The retrieve is smooth, the casting could be smoother, and is a little noisy (you can tell the bearings are not the best by all the noise), but it casts quite far. That’s what I was doing later today was testing with a 1/4 ounce weight. Anyway, I was surprised with this reel, and I’ll be using it in the future. The drag is also good, near what is advertised. If anything occurs I’ll update this review, as for now I’ll continue using it.
A T Capehart : Good Los Cost Reel
Bought this since I hadn't owned a baitcaster in a while. Once I got the dynamic brake and spool tension dialed in it performs great. I really enjoy this reel. Very happy with my purchase. I bought it when it was ~$25 and I think for the money it was an awesome purchase. Last I checked it was close to $50. At that price point a whole new list of options comes in to play and I don't know how it compares at that price point.

Tyler M : A+
Quality baitcaster for the price. Single brake (magnetic). Very easy to use once you’re comfortable with baitcasters.
Natalie Kilpatrick : Kalex XL3 Baitcast Low Profile Fishing Reel
Durable and well manufactured. Definitely not a cheap piece of equipment. Works as intended.
Sophie : Worried about this $20 reel being the real deal? Don’t be

This Is Us : Good reel once minor quirk was fixed
UPDATED (Aug 23): Finally got around to spraying a little bit of penetrating chain lube around the spool axle and sidewalls. Wiped up drips and drops to remove excess. After letting it sit for about five minutes, she was casting beautifully.
I was casting a 1/8 oz bait and weight about 30 yards with nominal effort....if any effort. Then, I just put a light rubber cork on the line in place of the bait, and I could easily cast it 20 yards with nominal effort after adjusting brake settings. Most of the clanky and grindy noise from the retrieve is now gone, too. I guess the liquid chain lube worked. The reel only needed some TLC.

UPDATED: (Aug 20). I used this reel with both a weighted plastic worm and a swimbait on 15lb braid while kayak fishing. It simply doesn't cast very far. If the magnets are set to lower than 7, then backlashing happens even with thumbraking. The spool tensioner is almost useless, too. I can loosen it to the point that the cap is about to fall off, but a 1/8 oz lead-weighted plastic worm will barely fall.
Not sure if I have a defective reel or not, but I have yet to try adding lubricant to the spool. I might also have to remove line as it seems that the line loosens around the spool with every susequent cast and retrieve.
All of that said, it is still a durable and beautiful reel. I just can't seem to dial this one in for some reason. My other baitcasters were much easier.

ORIGINAL: I would pit this reels against an Abu Garcia SilverMax or Picsifun Torrent any day of the week. In fact, I just did. It is wickedly fast when brakes are off, easy to control when brakes are, smooth as silk when reeling in, and palms perfectly (for me). My only "complaint" is that the brake panel release button is a little stiff, and there aren't any arrow indicators telling you which way to turn the panel in order to remove it. Other than that, this is a TERRIFIC reel, especially for the money.
Clr324 : Exceptional quality at an excellent price!
I purchased three of these baitcast reels and have used a couple times since purchasing. These seem to be really great reels and exceptional value. I had some really older reels that I wanted to replace, so I purchased these since they were inexpensive. These cast long and smooth, very lightweight, and very low profile to fit in your hand. I have some big name reels and these compare very similar. The look and design is sleek and sharp. I will be purchasing more to replace as needed!
Amazon Customer : Nice entry level baitcaster.
If you are looking for an entry level baitcaster then this one works well. Took a little to get it adjusted just right but once I got it right I can cast pretty accurately and a good distance. Perfect to get you into using a baitcaster. You either enjoy learning the skill or you abandone it and the cost of this won’t make you sad.
Garrett Nelson : Just buy it
I own two of these and so far they have been great. Kalex is definitely an underrated brand. The reel is compact, lightweight and fast. This reel pulls line as fast as my pfluger president xt, plus its made made the parent company of pfluger. Pure fishing and kalex definitely put out a great product at great price. Give it a try, I'm sure you'll be satisfied.
Amazon Customer : Great Quality
Light weight and great looking. Great quality
Danielle : Best baitcaster under $30
Haven't had it on the water yet but judging this one to others I've had, this is the one you want. Best bang for buck under $30 by far. Had a few practice casts and it's very smooth. Would buy again.
