Questions about Commercial Chef CCD100W6 Compact Dehydrator, Beef Jerky Maker, Food Preservation Device, 100 Watts, White
Q:
I am new to drying fruits... How do you know which fruits take the same temp and time to dry?
Answer: By or borrow a book on dehydrators. I am just starting out so I only have experience with apples and bananas so far. Many fruits require that you spray them first with Lemon Juice and water. I have made Beef Jerky a couple of times with success. I just marinate it ("Baby Rays" and a touch of booze) . I just throw the strips on, crank it up to max and keep an eyeball on it.. If doing multiple trays, I switch bottom to top as the jerky stiffens so the bottom won;t get overcooked.
Answer: There's a handy booklet that comes with it that tells times and temps. I usually just put it on med temp and open it and feel them periodically. With the fan inside you dont really need to rotate the trays, but I do anyway. This is a good unit for a newby.
Answer: The booklet that comes with it is helpful for that.
Q:
Are there round silicone sheets available for this dehydrator? Or from another brand that can be used / will fit with this dehydrator?
Answer: I searched for "dehydrator silicon sheets round" on Amazon and found several choices. Finding the right size might be difficult, but you could probably trim them with some scissors.
Q:
Does this come with a book of cooking recipes?
Q:
Is this product dual Voltage? 120-240v?
Answer: no
Q:
One manual says to cook poultry and marinate beef. i'm making dog treats. do i need to do that before i dehydrate it?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Poultry must reach an internal temperature of 165F to kill any possible viruses. Beef is marinated for 2 reasons; impart flavor and act as a preservative.
Answer: I've only done beef jerky and yes I marinated it in teriyaki sauce. I am not sure about chicken. The temperature and time setting are accurate to the guide though if that helps.
Answer: If it is only for dog consumption you don't have to cook the chicken they can handle it raw.
Answer: Yes. It is imperative that you prepare the food for consumption before you dehydrate it. Think of the dehydration process as a final step not a shortcut. Hope it goes well for you! God bless!
Q:
How long is the warranty?
Answer: 1 Year Warranty
Answer: One year
Answer: Just a year.
Q:
i got the westinghouse wfd100w for christmas 12-25-17 i just open box today on 1-5-18 and would like to know if i can dehydrate beef and make jerky ?
Answer: Answering for other searchers: I use this for two purposes: making beef jerky and drying my 3d printer filament. The jerky is great and I love this seasoning and curing product: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B009SJAX4M that tastes just like the jerky you buy in stores when I use it with bottom round beef.
Answer: I have only used my dehydrator for fruits and veggies. I can only imagine that it would also make great jerky. Just look online for directions and I'm sure it will work well.
Answer: We purchased the rectangular one and yes it does make jerky. We found played and found the right temperature and right amount of time per thickness of slices. Hope this helps.
Answer: You sure can. Mine came out pretty well. I like it better when I smoke it outside though.
Q:
I purchased this commercial chef dehydrator to dry chicken for my dog. however the instruction manual doesn't give info. has anyone dried chicken?
Answer: I have dried chicken for years for my dogs. I slice skinless boneless chicken breasts thin and dry at top heat for 8 hours or intil you reach desired doneness. It helps to freeze the chicken for an hour prior to slicing.
Q:
Where can I get additional trays?
Answer: Additional won’t fit. If you just wanted some extra I don’t know about that.
Q:
Is it possible to dry sunflower seeds with these trays?
Answer: I haven’t tried it but I don’t see why not. There are holes in each tray for the air to flow through so you’d have to take that into consideration if the seeds are tiny. I love the dehydrator though. No issues at all, and very easy to clean up after using.
Q:
Does the fruit stick to the trays after drying
Answer: I've only used it for jerky, hot peppers, and I made raisins from grapes growing outside my door. The raisins did stick, so I'd imagine most fruits would stick a little.
Answer: Yes it does some fruits more than others, get the dehydrator mats they work great. Keeps the fruit from sticking with an easy cleanup
Answer: We haven't had any problem with food sticking. However, we sometimes flip our items about midway through the drying process.
Answer: I have not found that to have occurred but would wipe the tray with a lightly oiled towel if it did.
Q:
Just received this and there are no instructions for drying meat in mine and no jerky recipes. Why did I not get this and how would I do that?
Answer: There's a million great recipes for jerky, fruit, etc. on line. But the important things is to cut the meat no thicker than 1/4 of an inch thick. Either the butcher can do it or you can take a cut of meat and freeze it for an hour to semi-harden then cut it yourself. I marinade it over night then dry off the pieces well, place them on the rack leaving a little space between pieces. Set it on high 158 I believe and let it go for about 6 - 9 hours depending on thickness. I just test one and let it go a little longer if needed. I can get about a 3 lb roast on all of the racks combined. Also, the manuals are on line.
Q:
I am confused. Does this have round or rectangle shaped trays?
Answer: The trays are round.
Answer: Definitely round. I love this unit!
Answer: Round
Answer: Round
Q:
has anyone tried drying chamomile? did the seeds/ or part of the flower fall through to the rack below it?
Answer: anything small enough can fall through
Q:
Where can I buy extra trays?
Answer: While I have not yet been able to find extra trays for this dehydrator (still looking!), I disagree with the other answer that it is crap. I have been using it for making jerky and also for drying my 3d printer filament. For both uses it has been great! I just want MORE room to dehydrate more jerky at once.
Answer: I don’t know. I threw the whole thing away after the first use and several trays broke. This item is crap.
Q:
Do all the trays need to be full to use?
Answer: I've used it both full and partially full. The only thing affected was the time it took for things to dry. The more you have in it, the longer it takes, of course.
Q:
How long does it take to dry jerky?
Answer: I made chicken jerky for my dogs. It took about 7 hours.
Answer: Sorry, i can't answer this question.
Answer: About 16 to 20 hours
Q:
Can I buy an extra top piece and trays?
Answer: Yes
Q:
Would this work for drying herbs like rosemary and thyme?
Answer: It would, but you might want to try it on the low setting for your first batch and check after about an hour to gauge the doneness.
Answer: It would, however the unit is pretty small so make sure it fits your needs.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can I use this to dehydrate sprouted sunflower seeds or are the holes too big for this?
Answer: The wholes are probably too big.
Answer: There are several 3rd party non-stick silicone tray liners that might work for this.
Q:
Description says 245 watts and title 100 watts. What's correct?
Answer: Not sure i use it on a normal house outlet without any electrical problems
Q:
Is it possible to buy extra trays for the wfd100w? if so, where might i find them?
Answer: Yes, you should be able to find them on Amazon or elsewhere all over the internet.
Q:
Are the trays dishwasher safe?
Answer: Yes, on the top rack.
Answer: yes
Q:
Can I dry small pieces of meat, and egg shells?
Answer: I wouldnt see any problem with that. There are jerky recipes in the manual...just make sure they are small enough and thin enough and use the proper temp?times recomended
Answer: Yeah i did apples seems like it takes a long time, ive heard the dehydrators with the fan motor on top dries faster.
Q:
Does this item put out a great deal of heat? Also does the item put off any cooking odors? Thanks in advance...
Answer: I wouldn’t call it a great deal of heat, but it does put out heat. Heat and air is part of the dehydration process.
Answer: This item puts out a moderate amount of heat. It does give off the odor of whatever you are dehydrating. My house smells like lemons when I dehydrate lemons and cucumbers when I am a doing a batch of cucumbers.
Answer: It does not put out a great amount of heat, but the heat is noticeable if the room is very small.
Q:
Does it works with 220V?
Answer: I have never use it I ordered it for my grandson and had it shipped to him. He uses it to make jerky.. I doubt very seriously that it works on 220 as it runs on 110, it would prob burn up
Q:
Can this be left running while not home?
Answer: Yes
Q:
are the trays bpa free plastic?
Answer: I took a look at the user manual and it did not state in the manual if the trays are pba free.
Answer: the trays are terrible! they cracked after first use....literally falling apart after a few uses
Q:
Does this unit have a fan to move air?
Answer: Yes, it has a fan.
Answer: Yes it does.
Q:
Can you purchase additional trays that will work for fruit leather for this particular model?
Answer: I've seen a number of different trays available from Walmart.
Answer: I haven't been able to find a replacement.
Q:
What type of plastic is used on the shelves?
Answer: The shelves are a clear and fairly ridged plastic. Because plastics are today made with so many different formulas, it is not possible to identify the composition of the shelves.
Answer: Clear hard rigid plastic. Most cheeper models have the same racks.
Q:
The air coming out of the dehydrator is not warm at all, even if I turn it up to the highest temperature. Is it supposed to be like that?
Answer: Mine comes out warm
Q:
Can this be used for dehydrating meats such as chicken or any beef? The booklet doesn't have a guide for dehydrating meats, only fruits and vegetable
Answer: Yes, I'm sure it can. I did some mushroom jerky and it came out great! Just reshuffle the trays every so often to make sure the bottom trays dont dry out faster than the top ones
Q:
Because of the warning, how safe is the unit?
Answer: I’ve used it to dry herbs, vegetables, and fruit so far, with excellent results. What “warning” are you referring to?
Answer: I have used this item a couple of times and have left it on overnight for about 12 to 14 hours while making beef jerky. I have not had any difficulty with it.
Q:
Does it make a beep sound when it ends? Do you need to rotate or flip anything halfway through the dehydration?
Answer: no beep. depending on what you are drying you may need to rotate trays.
Answer: There is no beep, you turn it off when the material is dry. You will have to flip the material being dried, less so if you cut the fruit or whatever more thinly
Answer: No and no
Q:
Use it for herbs?
Answer: I haven't tried it for herbs, but the description with the product does say it will do flowers and herbs. Good luck!
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
How do you make tender jerkys and tender fruits? I don't like regular jerky or hard or really dry fruit.
Answer: I disagree with Robertine's comment. Meat does NOT have to be cooked first before making jerky. Google for jerky recipes to find out how it is made (seasoning + curing agent) and how to be sure your jerky is more tender (better cuts of meat and less cook time and/or adding worcestershire or soy to rehydrate)
Answer: Dont dehyrate as long, keep checking to your liking. Meat much be cooked first.
Q:
Does it have a solid tray so I can put in chicken broth and make boullion powder?
Answer: No solid tray.
Answer: No it doesn't, you can use parchment paper on the bottom for liquids.
Answer: No, you would need to purchase that separately.
Answer: No it doesn't
Q:
can the shelves be removed to fit one larger item inside? Not using for food.
Answer: I have never use it I ordered it for my grandson and had it shipped to him. He uses it to make jerky

Answer: I bought this for my grandson had it shipped to him and have never even see it. sorry
Q:
Does it have a "no heat" or fan only option?
Answer: No heat only
Q:
Does the heat destroy the nutrients?
Answer: Is good product
Q:
In the heading it says, "100 watts" but in the body of the description it says it "uses 245 watts". How many watts does it actually use?

Product reviews of Commercial Chef CCD100W6 Compact Dehydrator, Beef Jerky Maker, Food Preservation Device, 100 Watts, White
Taulbee : Works great for dehydrating filament
I use this to dehydrate 3d printer filament and it work great. You have to cut all the trays with wire cutters but its easy and after that the spools fit perfect.
Tyler Gunn : Great for drying 3D printer filament.
It seems to run a bit under the temperature reported on the dial. However, it does work great to dry 3D printer filament.
Kathleen Vena : Great little dehydrator
I made dried fruits, “sun” dried tomatos, and jerky. Did excellent dehydrating food kept it’s flavor and color. I found it was most efficient using the highest temp on the dial. I also liked the more compact size.
Zachary Thomas Snyder : Compact and works great for the money
Cute little dehydrator for small batches
Maggie : Not as Advertised
I opened the box, removed instructions, only shows veggies and fruits. Temp is not high enough to cure meats. Product description is not correct. Sent it back.
Nathan : Perfect filament dryer
I bought this specifically to use as a 3d printer filament dryer and it works great as one. You can trim out 3 trays and a standard 1kg roll fits perfect. (Thingiverse has printable options if you dont want to trim it). Great price & huge savings over a dedicated dryer. Very quiet, thenprinter fans make more noise than this.
Nicole D : Cute but doesn't last long
Easy to use. The only reason why I'm giving it four stars is because the lid is not flat. So I've had to put a plate on top to keep the lid on. Other than that it works great.
Update bought in april and the trays are cracking and breaking as well as the lid.
Robertine Madore : Great Product
Grea!t things come in small packages. Works great for a little thing. Love it
Corrine Murphy : Your gonna love it !
Love our dryer we have used it on many things are favorite is the pineapple as long as they’re sliced thin they take up half the time and just make sure anything you dry out is dried out for shelflife purposes yummy yummy we didn’t go wrong with this.
Rob Gillan : Small
I would like if it went a little hotter for making jerky
Lynn : Doesn't take up much room.
I love the dehydrator but it came with little to no instructions about the different settings and how to use them.
Tyler Gunn : Great for drying 3D printer filament.
It seems to run a bit under the temperature reported on the dial. However, it does work great to dry 3D printer filament.
Sheila Ujlaky : Works well easy
Small but holds alot
Aaron Brown : with a quick modification its perfect for my 3d printer filament
with a quick modification its perfect for my 3d printer filament
justmeblp : Great price great size for 2 people.
Great price great size for what I needed it for trays fit great in the dishwasher. Preformed as expected.
Kit : Bad purchase
This dehydrator was hard to use/set temp and worse to clean. I wouldn't use this for food preparation so I returned it.
Rob Gillan : Small
I would like if it went a little hotter for making jerky
L-Con : Thermostat is terrible.
I've found that the thermostat isn't even close to being calibrated. I have to turn the dial all the way up to 158 degrees, to have it actually reach 140 degrees (and that's empty). The swing is insane, for such a limited thermostat. It cycles off, and doesn't cycle back on, until the temp has dropped @ 30 degrees. I would expect this type of swing in a thermostat designed for controlling temps of 140-650 degrees. but not 104-158 degrees. For such a small variance in temperature settings this is unacceptable. I've been servicing and repairing hot side food equipment for almost 20yrs, and there's no way any chef, or any manager, for that matter would accept this. I bought this to dry out 3d printing filament, but since the temp barely reaches what I need, and the thermostat is so far off, I don't see how anyone could feel comfortable using this for edible food products. If you need something that will maintain a SET temperature, +/- 10-15 degrees, look elsewhere.
Taulbee : Works great for dehydrating filament
I use this to dehydrate 3d printer filament and it work great. You have to cut all the trays with wire cutters but its easy and after that the spools fit perfect.
Zack : Great!
Works great, easy to clean and use. Arrived fast.
Jon : Works Well, Great Price
Inexpensive but works great so far. Very pleased.
Alan. : Light, compact, still gets the job done!
My husband likes to dehydrate meat to make jerky! He loves this one compared to the other one we had before. Light, compact and still has enough trays to get the job done! Super, super easy to clean.
Tyler Gunn : Great for drying 3D printer filament.
It seems to run a bit under the temperature reported on the dial. However, it does work great to dry 3D printer filament.
PauMom : Great for the price
Dehydrates well for the price. Shows beef jerky on the box but it doesn't have instructions to make it like it does for fruits and veggies.
KCM11 : Did not even have it 1 week and the motor started smoking.
First I after only a few days of having it the motor did not want to run and took a while to start up. It started to smoke and smell like the motor was burning up. I have been looking for replacement parts but no luck. It is too much trouble to send it back and will not buy this brand again.
Kelly Poole : What a Pleasant Surprise!
My main purpose for buying a dehydrator was to dry herbs and plants for teas and medicinal use. After reading reviews on many dehydrators here on Amazon, I chose this one because of it's temp control. Many dehydrators just have an "on" switch and that's it. But herbs need a much lower temp than things like meat and fruit. It's typical to dry herbs at 95F to 115F and this dehydrator's lowest temp is 104. However, since I live in Louisiana where humidity is so high this works out perfectly as a very low temp for drying herbs. I hear other people asking "Why don't you just hang them to dry, that's how you're supposed to dry herbs." But here, when I hang herbs to dry, they turn black because they aren't drying out. The humidity is way to high. So this Dehydrator works perfectly for what I needed! I've dried several different herbs in it so far and they've all come out perfect in just a few hours, sometimes less. Before, I was trying to dry them in a small convection oven and on it's lowest temp, they'd all come out brown and way over heated. I'm very happy with this purchase! I wanted to add a photo, but there is no option to do so for some reason. Overall this was a GREAT purchase for the money, considering how high some of the other dehydrators on here are.
justmeblp : Great price great size for 2 people.
Great price great size for what I needed it for trays fit great in the dishwasher. Preformed as expected.
David Lee : A nice dehydrator for the beginner
Last year during the lock down 2020 I tried to keep busy and conserve food by started doing food dehydration. I mean yea, there is a way to do it with the oven and outdoor sun, there is even a way by using the the air fryer, but those methods are really ineffective compare to the food dehydrator. Since I'm just trying to make food to save food with fruits and vegetables, and only when we(my mother and I) can't eat the food fast enough. Plus we mostly shop at COSTCO, which mean most of food comes in bulk. This dehydrator is not the fastest, plus the capacity is small compare to the metal ones. but it's inexpensive and for those just learning the art of dehydration, this is a good one to learn with.

Namaste : Easy
Really great, actually smaller and more compatible than i thought but loads of layers for space. Takes a while but needs no admin or care during the process so can just be left entirely to do its job.
Nelly : Works great fun to use.
I am new to dehydrating. This works great. I have been a mad women dehydrating everything I can. I think I may order a larger dehydrater. This is perfect for a beginner and if you have small amounts to do.

Brenda Knoll : Wow! Works great, super cute and space saving
I love this product. I was shocked by how small the unit was, but decided to suspend judgment until trying it out. I purchased the unit to make my own green powder and ginger powder. I purchase large amounts of greens from Costco because that is the size they sell but can never finish because I like variety so I end up wasting my greens and shopping for groceries at multiple stores.
So I had been making my own ginger powder already for use in my salad dressing, I want organic and not chunky, but it was messy and took a couple days of unpleasant looking muck on my counter drying.
So I bought for that but saw YouTube videos making own green powder, which is expensive to buy so when I got the unit, I threw the last of my organic greens in it and went to my grandchilds game for an hour. When I got home, the greens surprisingly were dry, I put it in my ninja bullet and voila, multiple cups of greens reduced to tablespoons of green powder. NICE! Added green powder to water and was able to drink way more than I can eat of the healthiest raw organic greens.
I have since made two types of beef jerky, salmon jerky and plan to make zucchini garlic parmesan chips this morning.
I LOVE this unit. Clean up is cakewalk

Wayne C. : JUNK
Died after less than 100 hours of use. Overheated and melted the bottom two trays. Could have started a fire. Fan started making a terrible noise, and stopped working entirely. Look elsewhere
Curious Guy : I have a quick fix if you hear the fan grinding! Still best $30 spent!
Listen up! I have had mine for about 3 months now and being that this is so cheap, you usually don't get what you pay for. Please take my experience so you understand what happened. I figured something would happen and tonight, it finally did. The fan on the inside was ever so slightly touching the white housing on the inside forcing the fan to slow down. If you hear yours chugging along, you have the same problem as I did. Here's the kicker, they made these with 4 Phillips head screws underneath and one with a triangular head. Lucky for me, I purchased a $20 or $30 screwdriver set for computers last week and it came with a triangular tip attachment. I think they figured this would happen which forces the fan to grind and ultimately break the motor on the inside. Why else would they change one screw to a triangular head? And that same screw has such a thin whole for access that I had to use a drill bit to get to it. This is a very simple fix. Remove the 5 screws underneath and remove the base from the machine. Flip it upside down and you'll find 3 similar Phillips head screws. Those are for the shield on top of the machine, it sits above the fan. If you remove those three screws and take the fan cover off, you'll find scratch marks on the fan because it was rubbing against the shield. I simply took 80 grit sandpaper and turned the machine on so the fan does all the work. Lightly touch it with the sandpaper to create a groove and you're done. Put the shield back on with the 3 screws and test it out. You shouldn't hear any grinding anymore! I reckon this little fix will last a very long time. It took me 20 minutes to do this without any directions and here you are with a detailed account on how to do it. My jerky doesn't know the difference hahahaha! Tastes amazing!
Got a notification from Amazon so thought I'd update. June 2nd 2020 and still going strong. I make about 3lbs of jerky every month and use this dehydrator for different things. I forgot to mention, this dehydrator is excellent for drying out aftermarket car air filters. I basically use it for anything that'll fit inside or without the plastic trays. I'm pretty careful with the trays and none have broken yet. Be extra sensitive with them and I think they'll last. I guess I'll continue trying to update periodically.
Kindle Customer : small size makes it convenient to store and suitable for dehydrating small amounts of food
I have a large dehydrator that I love, but it's too large to store in my modest kitchen. It only gets pulled out when I'm willing to commit a significant amount of time. I also wanted to start dehydrating smaller amounts of food that was not being used in a timely manner. Yes, I'm an avid Costco fan, but sometimes the bulk packaging leads to waste. This dehydrator fits nicely in my kitchen cupboard, making it easy to access as well as suitable for smaller amounts of food. I can process those small amounts of food in just minutes versus having to dig out the big dehydrator and find space for it. I LOVE the tray design that allows for height adjustment. I've already used it numerous times, so my kudos come from experience.
Sheila Ujlaky : Works well easy
Small but holds alot
Shane Riddle : It does the thing
I use it for 3d printer spool drying. does what it says it does
Kevin : Doesnt work
Bought this to dry filament so I cut out the trays right away turn it on to dry a spool and find out it blows cold air. I have read temperatures on it when running it at max and it never got above ambient temperature. This things a scam spend your money elsewhere.
R. Turpin : 3D printer filament dryer
Works fine as a 3D printer filament dryer. Not sure how good it dries food.
Cricket : Good dehydrator for the money.
I've been using this religiously since I bought it. Love the ease of use and easy cleaning. Comes with a guide for dehydrating all kinds of different foods, which I needed, and the only prep work is slicing the food for dehydrating. Love it!!
Aaron Brown : with a quick modification its perfect for my 3d printer filament
