Questions about Penn RIV20LW Rival Level Wind, Black, 20
Q:
Is this Possible for jigging?
Q:
Can you get this reel without the line counter? (penn-riv20lw)
Answer: mine didnt have a line counter
Q:
Does it have a bait click on it ?
Answer: Yes.
Answer: Yes.
Q:
I’m looking for line counter reels, does this reel have a line counter like in the pic?
Answer: No. The one I ordered did not. Apparently they are using a stock picture with a line counter. Disappointing but was still a good price for reel. Same reel with line counter will cost a bit more. You have to read the fine print or whole description of product to know if it includes line counter.
Answer: The model number that end on “LC” are the ones with line counter
Q:
This item made in china or usa??
Answer: China
Q:
How much line and size does it hold
Q:
what size is best for offshore fishing
Answer: Do not buy the rival. Bought one as a cheap spare rod for lane snapper fishing offshore broke 1st use really bad rig. If you are grouoer fishing go with the 30s maybe 20s. Use the warfare or squall. I go through a bunch of rigs so I am liking the warfare q5 for small reef fish offshore.
Answer: I don't do any offshore fishing but I do use this model for Cobia on the Chesapeake Bay. I would say this one would be okay for offshore with a matching rod. It's sturdy enough to handle larger fish.
Answer: That is an open question. What's the target fish and how far are you going out, your experience level. but overall I would use a 20 or 30. good all-around reel. and Penn know how to make them.
Answer: Thats not an easy answer as it depends on what you are going for. These are what i would consider a medium duty reel. Not a deep sea huge fish reel. If thats your taste a senator is prob your best bet. These are so far a great reel for me
Answer: The type and size of reel depends on what kind of fishing you are going to do and the size of the fish. Larger fish require larger rod and reel combinations. My Penn Rival will handle up to 50lb fish very easily and is small and light enough to use when I kayak fish in the Gulf. If you fish for species like Blue Fin tuna you would need much larger tackle at a much higher price. Hope this helps.
Answer: Honestly, I wouldn't use this reel for anything heavy duty offshore. Mine lasted less than three months before self destructing and that wasn't even with heavy usage. It's just not well constructed, a lot of plastic. If you want to stick with Penn, look at something like the Senator.
Answer: i would use the 30LC with 50 lb braid. good reels but if u use it a lot make sure to service them every year. tight lines and cold beer
Q:
what is the gear ratio for the penn rlv20lw rival levelwind
Answer: 5.1:1
Q:
Is this reel good for salt water fishing with the heavier wheighted lines? If so which model? Not sure what the difference are.
Answer: Yes this is a great saltwater reel
Q:
Is this reel left handed? it says lw in the model number, but in the pictures it is showing right handed. can somebody please clarify?
Answer: Let is level wind. If you want that rig in left hand then the part number would look something like 15lwlh lh at the end is left hand
Q:
Will this reel be good for catching red snapper offshore? If so then what would be the best lbs. test?
Answer: Snapper, yes.

Phillip Reedy : Poor level wind, poor durability, and basic chinese overall.
Bought 2, they will only level out 20+lb mono, and only lay braid along the center and leave a 3/16th gap at each edge of the spool thanks to a piss poor guide design and insufficient guide travel. 1, the clicker is light and sounds plastic, the other it's very stiff and much more audible. Free-spool has different resistance on each of them, play in the gears is worse than average, and I have no faith in these for fighting big fish unless I'm running light drag and just letting the fish tire out, opposed to having decent control. An old-school Penn Peer 209 is a better reel than the Rival. Would not recommend these t anyone.
WilliamEAustin : Wrong product
Didn't have line counter
Pictureman : Good basic reel for the price.
I have always been a fan of Penn. This seems to be a good basic inexpensive reel. I purchased two for cat fishing. Note: these reels are also available as a combo, but I was not impressed with the Penn rod so I purchased different rods locally and bought both reels on Amazon. So far I am satisfied but have not hooked into a cat over 20 lbs so cannot say how well they will hold up after a few feisty 40+ cats. I also will use them for pier fishing on different rods. I was looking for an inexpensive reel with decent gears and brakes that will last. I believe these will fill the bill.
Travis E. : Caught me some fish tacos.
Can't beat I for the price
Nathan Klein : Good value for the price
Port this wheel for fishing off the boat you still in Gloucester Massachusetts it worked great and caught lots of fish

Mordechay C. Noyman : Doesn't work well as expected
Got the 20 reel yesterday. Took it out of the box just to find out that the auto-engaging gears don't work (will need to put it manually in gear with the button) and the clicker insists to work all the time (the button jumps back to clicking mode).

LITO G. SALVILLA : Flawed design....
Haven't caught a fish yet, reel body fell out from reel stand attached to the rod seat. Reel stand is attached by 4 pins that are suppose to be expanded on both ends to secure it to the reel. The defect is that the pins are not properly expanded on the outer side of the stand.
