Answer: I use a bait caster, but I started out with a (push button). The one great thing about a zebco is, Tell a bait caster to place his boat 5 ft. from the end of a dock and skip a worm 30 ft up under the dock. Sorry can't do it. LOL

Answer: I have mine set up on a 7.6' med/H Rod, it's a heavy big well made reel, consider that when choosing a rod.
Answer: This is a real heavy duty reel. I will be putting 20 to 30 pound test and with that I would use a very heavy light duty ocean rod. this is what I have, it cast really well great for cat fishing or light ocean Beach fishing

Answer: An 808 saltwater reel is heavy so I wouldn't put to much weight on line but yes that much weight can be fished but you lose a lot of feel of the bite.

I bought 2 808 reels. They have been on four 4 hour fishing trips in 4 weeks. 1 has already started acting up. The anti reverse is not engaging. Zebco's always worked well 25 years ago. I just started fishing again. I am not impressed.
Up date: I bumped it up to 2 stars, because Amazon customer service was phenomenal. I wrote an email making the complaint above. They responded, by sending me a new reel and a return label free of charge, no questions asked. I am happy. Hopefully this reel will last.

I have 4 Zebco 808 reels used for fresh water Flat Head fishing. Never had a problem, even added heavier line up to 30 pound test. I have brought in 40-55 pound flatties without any problem with these heavy duty reels. Yes, these are my main line reels when fishing for the big flatheads.

The reel handle shaft going through the blue plastic body was very wobbly no matter how much I tightened the screw on the other side. I bought the 888 about the same time and it did not have this problem. I kept the 888 to put on a Shakespeare Wild Cat Rod for my wife and returned the 808 I was going to put on an old Zebco Saltwater Combo. I haven't found much else in the line of saltwater spincast for my wife's rod so I'll probably just get another 888. If I were using it I'd put a new Quantum Monster baitcaster 7.1:1 but the price is still too high.

Nice reel, comes pre-spooled with 20lb test monofilament line. Looks great with the royal blue/chrome combination, and gears are strong. Handle is a little large, I think I can crank my boat winch with it also.

Just returned from a week long inshore FL fishing trip. Too late to return the two reels. Tried various types of line, mono and braid.. Line would hardly leave reel. Basically had to pull line out of reels and let tide move line. It would have been easier using a hand line. Reel itself worked well other than the casting phase. That's what I get for not taking spinning reels. Guess I miss the Zebco 33 that I had as a kid. No where near the same quality.
