Questions about Orvis Battenkill Fly Reels, Iii (5-7 Wt)
Q:
Adam- Thanks for the info, how many yards of 30lb line can this reel hold?
Answer: Not sure, I’d be guessing but a full box of fly lines plus backing line
Answer: Hi Peter; The Battenkill III 5-7wt is designated for 100 yds of 20LB backing. If you use 30LB I would guess that you might be able to hold at least 95 yds.
Answer: The Battenkill III spool is rated for a 20lb dacron backing and holds the following yardage with the lines as indicated.
Q:
Where is the extra spool? We did not receive it!
Answer: The reel doesn't come with a spare spool.
Q:
Im going ocean fishing for inshore fish so would 20lb be enough for a bonefish?
Answer: Great question, 20lb backing is usually just fine for bonefish. However, once your are starting to hook fish over 30lb, you will need to load the fly reel with 30lb backing for strength and reliability. I would suggest that if you are Ocean fishing to look at a fly reel with a drag system that is sealed while also having power to slow fish during the fight. We can help with this, please give us a call at the fly shop at 937-434-8472. Have a great day.
Answer: Hey Peter! Thanks for the question. I would go with at least 30lb for Bonefish! Please let us know if you have any other questions. -Adam
Q:
Can this reel handle saltwater or will it destroy the drag?
Answer: This reel does not have a drag. It is a click and pawl. You may use it in the Salt just clean when done. Thank you
Answer: These can be used in saltwater, but you should always rinse with freshwater after each use in saltwater.
Q:
can this reel handle saltwater, if so can it take on a bonefish?
Answer: Hi Peter; The Battenkill is designed for fresh water. For saltwater I would recommend the Hydros series. Claude Breton
Q:
Hi there, do you sell an extra spool for this reel?
Answer: Hi There;
Answer: Yes. We sell extra spools for both our current Battenkill Disc Drag and the Battenkill Disc Drag reels.
Answer: No
Q:

Answer: Hi Peter; The Battenkill III 5-7wt is designated for 100 yds of 20LB backing. If you use 30LB I would guess that you might be able to hold at least 95 yds.

Q:
Is the backing all the line or the very end. if it's the end how much could the battenkill iii with 30lb line hold in total? thanks
Answer: Great question. The Battenkill III Fly Reel is still considered a trout or bass fly reel for 5-7wt fly rods. You will not need the 30lb test backing and we personally recommend the 20lb backing. The Fly line is sold separately from the fly reel and fly backing. We would be more than happy to assist you with this purchase. Please give me a call at the fly shop at 937-434-8472 if we can be of any assistance. Have a great day.
Answer: Reel setup would be as follow: Backing first - 30 lbs roughly 75-125 yards. 100 feet of fly line in weight that matches rod. Leader - 9 foot and what ever lbs you need for the fishing your chasing. The reel does not come with any of this.
Answer: It will hold about 120 yards or 30 lb backing. Thank you
Q:
how much LB line can this reel hold at how many yards?
Answer: Here is the backing capacity from Orvis: 125 yards of 20lb backing & WF5F Fly Line, 100 yards of 20lb backing & WF6F Fly Line, 75 yards of 20lb backing & WF7F Fly Line.
Answer: Thank you for your mail. This reel will hold 125 yards of backing and your fly line WF-5-F. Thank you
Q:
The features and details state that the light weight design balances with shorter rods. Will the 5-7wt reel work well with a 7 1/2 ft. rod?
Answer: Hi Mr X;
Answer: Depends on the rod; the latest ultra-light builds may seem unbalanced with this reel. I use this model with a reasonably light 4-weight rod and it suits me well
Answer: Absolutely! It would be a perfect match, especially if you have a sense of nostalgia. I love the click and paw reel
Q:
Is this just the extra spool or both the reel and spool plus an extra spool?
Answer: I looked at the listing and it is confusing. It for the reel no extra spool. Thank you
Answer: no extra spool, reel only
Q:
extra spool?
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry. This particular listing is the fly reel only. The Extra Spool on the description is for when spools become available for the listing and you can choose this from a drop down menu. As of right now the these particular fly reels will not have spare spools for the next couple of months. If you have any questions, please give us a call at the fly shop at 937 434 8472
Answer: It does not come with a extra spool.
Answer: No we do not have the spool.
Answer: yes you can obtain an xtra spool
Answer: I've seen themisted separately. Not sure if they are available on all models of Battenkil. Has never come with any of the four reels I've purchased.

Joseph T.Wiezorek : Simple and easy
These are great simple click and pawl reels. I put one on a 5 weight rod and then one on a 3 weight TFO drift rod. These have been terrific and are easy to clean and replace parts if ever needed. I have pulled in 2 20 plus in trout on these and playing the fish was easy. I love the sound of the reels if the fish runs. If you do need a little more drag then you can simply apply it on the bottom side of the spool with your hand. These are also well constructed as I am pretty rough on my reels and after about a month of regular fishing just minor expected dings and scratches on them. I would highly recommend these. Also good to support Orvis and American based company!
