what type and size hooks arr best to use with this contraption? also, what bait? thanks

Answer: Being that where I am located, use of this device is illegal. However, hypothetically if I were to use this to fish for striped bass and/or catfish I would use a 4/0 or 7/0 Owners Mutu light circle hook baited with frozen anchovies, sardines, freshly dead shad or chicken liver.

Answer: These reels are a sort of "hang it and come back later" affair. If you have ever worked a "trot line" or ever been "jug fishing" your in the area. They are a lazy-mans fishing gear. Nothing wrong with that! I use a tough "catfish" bait, if I am planning on leaving it for a day or two. The hook and bait depends on what your expecting to catch! They are not meant to catch sharks or alligators! Max 3-5 # brim or catfish.

Is this good with saltwater? And does it have good line on it?

What is the quality of this item? I'm looking for something that won't break after the first few uses...

Answer: I've used mine a few times and they held up good. Their not for a giant fish. I keep 3 in my bug out bag

Answer: I doubt live minnows would trigger it, would take a hell of minnow.

Answer: I would say no, the trigger is very sensitive. However, the reel is very well made and I highly recommend it for other applications.

should I buy this?

Answer: If you want to set out hooks for small fish, then they are great. They will catch a bigger medium fish like a 12-14" catfish. But I use them for pond fish. They are great for brim or bluegill. If you have kids they will love these.

Answer: there nice to have if you are camping & don't have time to fish, like you are setting up camp & attach these to a tree 20 feet away form each other & put the line in the water & go do something else for a couple of hours then come back & there is dinner,,, also I keep 3 of them in my emergency bag ( BOB )

I orginally ordered One of these and received a faulty product. I emailed the company and they replaced i immediately for free. I gave them the benefit of the doubt I got the one a 20,000 that was bad. these things about her for extremely long time for a reason. the second one they mailed it works flawlessly.. I even ordered two more. Great survival item for bug out bag or for catching dinner. Ive seen videos of guys snaring small game with them looks cool but I haven't tried it yet. I did notice the more you buy the better deal you get.

Great addition to my camping gear. Got 4 of them so I can place them far enough apart along the river to try and catch some dinner. Be sure you use some strong wire or string to hold it to the tree. A big fish took one of them off already.

yeah i was skeptical at first, but yup, it works !
catches a lot of small fish but it will catch a keeper now and then too !
the trick is in putting on a secure bait that won't be nibbled off quick !
it's a great idea and something cool to toss in your tackle box, or for a survivalist

I got this in the mail today and after testing it out a few times with minimal force the thing broke! Do not buy this garbage unless you want to waste a few dollars. While the price of this thing is cheap it means it is also cheaply made, I mean if I could break it with little effort imagine if a fish was on it the thing would be destroyed in two seconds.

Fishing is fun if you have time. If you do not have time, but NEED the fish for food, this pocket sized mechanical automatic fishing reel could be a life saver. It just needs to be securely tied to a tree or other stationary object. Its spring action is supposed to set the hook for you while you are not attending it. As easy as it is, it does constitute fishing, so make sure to obey your states fishing regulations. Good for backpackers, kayakers, preppers, homesteaders and kids.

Eight : Compact and Cheap and Fast

Of anything, I can hammer on the shipping of this first and foremost - it was LIGHTNING fast.
The product itself is of reasonably good construction, and I've given it plenty of tests using weights of varying size, in this, it seems sturdy.

Now, of course, its illegal to use this in my state unless in an emergency situation, so a field test is out of the question for me (even if I did test it, admission of guilt is admissible in a court of law) but for the strains I've put it through with just my weight testing, seems decent. It has little trouble with anything up to about 8 lbs. Anything more than that and I wasn't sure how it would handle it, so I stayed away in order to keep it in tact and play it safe. Do I think it would handle more? Possibly, but I'll leave that gamble up to someone else.

The Price was right, the shipping was damn quick, and the product is sturdy. What more does one need?

In most states I suspect it is illegal to leave a fishing line unattended. Please check your regulations before you do that. As long as you are within sight and monitoring the line, I believe you are ok in my state (Wisconsin).

I have not had the opportunity as of yet, to try out this reel. My thought behind this item was to pack it away in my survival kit. I do a lot of hiking in the woods and mountains, I have found myself lost on a few occasions, never lost overnight, though miles away from where I started. I have made a survival pack for myself and thought this automatic reel would be a goo addition. The reel seems to work just fine! I think I made a good purchase! I would recommend that you check your local laws first.i only gave it three stars because I have yet to use it out fishing! If my opinion changes I will update this post.

these little suckers are awesome! they're comparable to mouse traps, except with a coiled spring. the trip is very sensitive, to the point where im not sure if these would work well off of the side of a boat because if the boat moved too much in the water it might set them off. good for lakes, ponds, and slow moving rivers and if you have some guitar string or piano wire these are perfect for small-game snares. great purchase, seller shipped it quick as a wink without any hassles

I havent used this product yet but I can say that by a few test I put it through, that it is a durable product. I got mine for aroud 4.00 at a local store and I have put in my backpacks survival kit for fishing. you simply take the reel and attach it to a tree trunk or branch, then you pull out as much line as you need and lock the reel in place. when the fish takes the hook it will unlock and fish on!
