Answer: It's on the top where your thumb goes but it's further forward and it's not an issue. It slides back to release the blades and I've never accidentally released the blades and I've cleaned over a thousand fish with my knife. I'm a professional fishing guide and I love this knife.

Answer: I have the knife with the stainless steel blades which works fine for my use. Titanium blades typically are better though due to corrosion resistance and typically stronger. This is why it is the often the choice for professional divers, military and other outdoorsmen. It is the better choice.

Answer: Yes the knife is supposed to have two blades. It will not work with only one blade. Send it back.

Answer: This is over kill for what you want. This is the best fish filet knife by far. I filet salt water fish (red snapper and grouper) as well as fresh water fish ( crappie bass and war mouth) with this knife. I've bought at least 6 other electric knives and none compare with the power of this one. I bought a back up in case something happens to mine. The blade does wear out so I'm on my third one. I do admit that I filet through the rib cage bones and leave them with the meat.
Answer: I cannot tell you how it would do on the types of meats you have mentioned but I don't why it wouldn't. It is the best filet knife U have ever used for fish. I don't cut the bones but large catfish have tough skin and it is never a problem.

I finally wore out my first American Angler after a couple of decades and thousands of fish. The spare has served me well, and I needed to have two. One for travel and one home. I plan to use it on some Lake Michigan salmon tomorrow. I saved the short blades in that the longer ones are a bit unwieldy. The sharp tip is great for taking out ribs. 25 May, worked as expected on the salmon, the blade eject button is out of the way better than in my previous model

If you have smaller hands, this knife is not for you. I'm a regular size guy, 5 foot 7, smallish hands. As soon as I opened the box, I couldn't believe how large the handle portion of the knife was. I'm replacing an old Rapala electric fillet knife that failed. The American angler handle is more than an inch longer and a great deal bigger in circumference. It's also quite heavy at 3 pounds. A regular manual fillet knife, obviously is light and built, ideally, for comfort and handling. The bigger the handle, the less comfortable, therefore, the harder it is to maneuver. The unit also appeared to look kind of cheap to me. That being said, I never did actually use the unit. My two star rating is based strictly on the enormity of the unit. I'm sure it would have worked quite well. It's just way too big for me. I have already ordered a Rapala lithium ion powered knife. It is less than 2 lb, including the battery. Hopefully, that will do the trick. The handle seems to be much smaller.
I am adding on to the last review because I just received my Rapala lithium-ion fillet knife. Most importantly for me, the part of the handle that you hold onto is a much smaller circumference then the American angler unit. Also, the entire area has a very grippy rubberized layer that makes it much easier to hold onto then the American angler unit. It's much quieter than the American angler unit, although it does seem to move a bit slower. I'm not sure about that though. The Rapala handle is pretty big towards the end where the removable battery is, although it's still a great deal lighter the American angler unit. I hope the Rapala lasts. I'm pretty sure your American angler unit was pretty heavy duty. It just didn't suit me very well, size-wise.

I got this knife in today. I had 19 crappie to filet. I already had the older model American Angler and it was starting to heat up after cleaning 15+ fish so I figured I'd upgrade. I have been buying stuff from Amazon for years and this will be the first time I've ever sent anything back. This knife does not seem to have the same rpm's (if that's a proper term) as my old knife. It seems that the blades reciprocate slower than my old knife. While there is definitely more torque, it does not work as well as my old knife. On top of that, after 10 fish the handle was so hot that I literally have a first degree burn on the palm of my hand. It got 10 times hotter than my old knife. I still had 9 fish to filet so I used my old AA knife and it did a better job and didn't get nearly as hot. It has to go back, it's worthless. Torque is great, but the reciprocating speed of the blades is just as important. Plus, you need to be able to hold it. Extremely disappointed.
