Questions about Rapala Fish 'N Fillet Knife with Sheath
Q:
Is this knife made in China or Finland?
Answer: the wood handle does say Finland I also happen have a 4" soft grip still in package and it does say China, reguardless of where it was made at it is a great knife still have the original one i purchased a "7" model" 40++ years ago along and still have this 4" that is not quite as old 20+years would not go fishing with out them.
Answer: Both of mine recently bought, 4 and 6 inch, indicate on the packaging, Made in Estonia which is 270 miles south of Finland across the Gulf of Finland.
Answer: I took a look. Mine definitely says "Finland" on both the blade and the leather sheath.
Answer: My 4 inch that I am holding in my hands says "Finland".
Answer: The product description clearly states "made in china"
Answer: This is the good one , made in Findland & wiil serve you long & well !
Q:
Perch and walleye. Go with 4 or 6 inch as a gift for dad. Thanks.
Answer: Either would be fine but the 6" will give him the more options as far as cleaning bigger fish also. Thank you for asking!
Q:
Is the sheath a sharpener
Answer: No, but funny you ask, because I impregnate the leather sheath on one side with blue magic to polish the blade after using a stone to sharpen it. This is my favorite fillet knife. Not pretentious, all business.
Answer: no, the sharpener is a separate but included item
Answer: No it is not the sharpener is the red thing inside the package.
Answer: No it is not. It is made of leather and used to hold the knife. The sharpener is a plastic and ceramic rods item that is sperate but included.
Answer: It is not. The sheath is leather. The sharpener is a red plastic piece with ceramic rods that is included.
Q:
Where is it made?
Answer: the small print says:
Answer: Estonia from the packaging
Answer: Finland
Q:
Is the this an ambidextrous knife or best for right handers?
Answer: It's for either hand. Wood handle so technically you could mod the handle to your liking.
Answer: You can cut yourself pretty bad, using either hand.
Answer: You can use either hand , it works for both.
Q:
How is the fit and finish of the knife? Mine has a gap on the brass top cap that holds the blade base and the blade tip is bent.
Answer: Sorry to hear your problem. I have had 1 or 2 Rapala filet knives in my tackle box and on the kitchen counter ever since I was a kid. Never had a bad blade or problems with fit or finish...
Answer: My knife has a low quality finish, but the blade and cap fit fine. I used it last year in Canada and it held up fine. This would not be my first choice.
Answer: Pretty Bad for me also. I bought a 4" model and it had an imperfection in the blade that was pretty obvious and should have been rejected by their quality control people. Almost seems like these are "seconds". I managed to sharpen the blade and remove some of the defect and figured I would just live with the rest. I really should have sent it back. I have a couple other 6 or 7" models from years ago which I just love as the best filet knives I have ever found.
Answer: Ours is fine no gaps or bent blade
Answer: All I can say is it’s a great knife that’s been made for years by the fisherman of Finland. Weather or not it has a gap this knife will preform very well for the purpose it was design for...
Answer: When we received ours it was perfect. Good quality, sharp blade and beautiful sheath. My catfish fillets never looked better!
Q:
How is the knife measured total length or blade length ?
Answer: Blade length = 6". Total length = 10.5".
Answer: Total length if I'm not mistaken. I just measured and the blade is 3 7/8" long and the handle is 4" long.
Answer: Blade length
Answer: It is measured by the blade. This is an exceptional knife. Stays sharp and fillets like a dream!!!
Answer: Total length
Answer: Total
Q:
how wide is the blade?
Answer: Halfway down the blade it is 1 half inch. Best knife i have ever used to cit up crappie
Answer: 1/16 inch thick
Answer: 5/8 inch at the base tapering to a very sharp point.
Q:
How well would this knife work on slicing and filleting steaks?
Answer: Should work perfectly. I use mine all the time to cut large sirloin roasts into 1/2" x 2" x 6" long strips to easily run through our meat grinder for making very lean ground beef. It's a great knife. Like any knife, keep it sharp. The included sharpener makes that easy.
Answer: It's for the fish, it even says fish and fillet knife
Answer: I haven't tried it on steaks just yet. When I do I'll send you a response.
Answer: I highly recommend it! I am impressed what this knife can do! What's the worst that can happen? You return it if you don't like it.
Answer: did not use open steaks, but was exceptionally sharp and worked great on fish.
Answer: I have three different sizes. I keep them sharp and I use them for absolutely everything. They are the best knives I have ever had! The smallest one is what we use for our meals that need knives. The largest ones are used to actually cut up whole chickens. You can't go wrong with these knives! I love the small ones for tomatoes they are absolutely a pleasure to use
Answer: It’s razor sharp so I wouldn’t hesitate
Answer: Wonderfully. We use it to butcher deer.
Q:
What is the overall length of the 6” blade ? And if someone has the 7” blade , what is that overall length ? Thanks
Answer: The six inch blade has a 10.5 inch overall length.

Answer: No, it is not serrated.
Answer: no, not serrated
Q:
Can the rapala 6" fillet knife be sharpened with a work sharp precision adjust knife sharpener?
Answer: Any high quality knife sharpener Will work I have three of these knives sometimes I use my electric knife sharpener sometimes I use my handheld ones sometimes I use the ones in my fishing bag. I use these knives for absolutely everything !
Answer: Yes. We have used these knives for years. They have been sharpen multiple times.
Answer: I am not totally sure but I think it can.
Q:
How long is the blade? 7 1/2"? I want 7 and 1/2 inch blade.
Answer: Rapala has a 7" ASIN: B00IXQWTKW and a 9", ASIN: B001NXC8AI. Hope that helps
Answer: This blade is 6".
Q:
What is the proper angle for sharpening this knife? Thanks.
Answer: Definitely use 20 degree (or slightly less) angle on a whetstone. 45 degree sharpen will ruin the edge. I just sharpened the 6" version to shaving sharp on my waterstone. It is really tricky due to the flex in the blade. But a little patience and you'll have it. The stones i used were 3000/6000 grit.
Answer: I don't know anything about the correct way to sharpen a knife but I use a regular kitchen knife sharpener and it works great. The kind of sharpener you just pull the knife through and it sharpens both sides is what I'm talking about.
Answer: If using a whet stone 45 degrees
Answer: 20 degree
Q:
Is the little sharpener supposed to just have one little angled sharpener rod or two? Mine only has one, but previous sharpeners I have encountered always have two
Answer: I have to laugh because my answer is going to sound like i don't know what I am talking about.
Answer: The one I got has two, can't say I've seen one that has only a single bar
Q:
Where is the lead in this product? The packaging says "This product contains lead.
Q:
This might seem strange, but would this work as a letter opener?
Answer: Yes it would.
Q:
Why is this 6" Rapala knife more expensive than the 7"? Except for this knife, the smaller Rapala knives are usually cheaper the the longer ones!
Answer: It wasn't more expensive through us but it prompt me look at our listing and it brought our prince down a little. We are selling the 6" for 19.97 and the 7" for 29.97.
Answer: Idk but I do not recommend this knife
Answer: price never constant on amazon... I got mine for $13.49... with free shipping and the sharpener...
Answer: we don't stock the 7.5"
Q:
need a belt loop for a rapala fillet knife sheath

Product reviews of Rapala Fish 'N Fillet Knife with Sheath
Amazon Customer : Buy a larger one
OK. It is a Rapala, the blade is 4 inches, but the handle is kid's size. Buy the 6 inch.
Mr S Le Page : ... was smaller than I expected but overall is a great little knife
The handle was smaller than I expected but overall is a great little knife. I bought it to take fishing didn't want to spend a fortune this fits my needs and my bag and performs well. Just wish the handle was an inch longer. The sheath is awesome.
BLH : Multiple Uses -- Not just for filleting fish!
Great knife for even general use. I use these in the kitchen and have various blade length sizes for boning meats or even slicing vegetables. Very sharp. It's the knife I always reach for first.
Alicia. : Best Fish Knife ever
Perfect
C. Olsen : Over 30 years
I've had one of these that I got from walmart, 30 years ago and it still is GREAT! The only reason I got another is my stuff is in storage and I didn't want to dig it out!
Richard Van Egdom : Quality not up to par
I have a couple other larger Rapala fillet knives which I love. I wanted to try the mini version. This knife had a slightly bent blade and an obvious defect in the blade which was visible without much effort. I thought about sending it back but in the end decided I would try to resharpen the blade to remove the defective area of the blade. I was at least partially able to correct the defect and straighten the blade. If this knife is representative of their current quality control it does not bode well for them.
Donald H. Crum : Veryyyy good blade!
Cannot beat this fillet knife!

Amazon Customer : Great
Knife works great for fileting fish
Sandy : Nice sharp knife
Great item good price
M. L Strickland : Rapala's quality still is excellent!
I've had Rapala filet knives before, and am now getting back into fishing and cleaning my own fish. I received my new Rapala knife today and immediately checked it out! IT is still as good as I remembered!
The blade appears to be the same quality steel and the edge is razor sharp right out of the box. The fibnish of the blade is well polished and the knife cuts beautifully. The quality and sharpness of the blade reminds me of my Mora knives. Beautiful! The one I got has a 4 inch blade and is not very flexible. I gues people like a highly flexible blade, but I can't tell much difference in use, so prefer this blade.
I prefer knives with either a through tang or a full tang for strength. This is a through tang knife with a brass fastener to hold the handle in place and a copper ferrule. The handle itself is a one piece wood handle and is nicely shaped. The handle has a varnished finish for protection.
The knife is intended for slicing cuts and is perfectly designed for that. There are no "frills" on this knife and its design and construction are time-tested so that it is the same as it was 40 or 50 years ago. I'm happy to see that they are not cutting corners on these knives.
The sheath is a well-made leather sheath with a plastic insert to keep the blade fully enclosed. The plastic insert will prevent the knife from cutting through the leather of the sheath. A belt loop is attached to the sheath.
I'm very happy with this knife!
TBess139 : Never go wrong with this one!
Best filet knife money can buy
Amazon Customer : Great knife with no BS. Wood handle, leather sheath. New ones have sharpener.
Been using these since I was a kid. I would not have had to buy this one, but I lost the one I've had for almost 20 years.. Flexible and sharp. The longer ones work a little better (I have a couple), but the 6" fits in my small tackle box perfectly.
BLH : Multiple Uses -- Not just for filleting fish!
Great knife for even general use. I use these in the kitchen and have various blade length sizes for boning meats or even slicing vegetables. Very sharp. It's the knife I always reach for first.
F. Phillips : Simple and effective
I have been using these knives for more than 30 years and have always been happy with them, so naturally, when the point got broken off my last one, I bought another.
When filleting fish, I make most of my rough cuts with an electric knife, but when it comes to more precise cuts, such as trimming out the fillets or removing skin from a catfish fillet, this knife is tough to beat. The blade is thin and very sharp, and if it dulls a little, a few swipes on the included sharpener will bring the razor edge back. I also use it processing big game, mainly hogs and deer, where a flexible blade and precise cut are needed.
There are fancier, more expensive knives out there, but the Rapala does everything I need and does it well.
Lisa Billings : Excellent
Excellent product that will last for many years to come and very fast shipping thanks
The King : Best non electric fillet knife
Good for filleting fish and game birds. Buy an extra so when your friend forgets theirs, you don’t have to do all the cleaning yourself.
Marcus R. Hall : Rapala 4 inch fillet knife review
4 inch fillet knife review - since the purchase of my first Rapala fillet knife of which I still own and use I have purchased many other Rapallo fillet knives as gifts for others.
I purchased this four inch fillet knife for doing close work in tight places.
It is a superb fillet knife, great price quick delivery
bigromo : small, but very sharp, excelelnt for boning small fish-other kitchen tasks
my larger rapala of 20 years is my favorite knife for everything. these sharpen razor sharp so easily. I bought one for a new winter home and thought length was the blade length. but it is the whole knife length! Smaller than i'd have purchased, but i found I liked it and though I may buy a larger one too, this one fills a void the other can't-although using the tip of a larger one can do the same as this mostly-but the small flexible blade is really good for working around the backbone of smaller fish-where a larger stiffer blade would waste meat. This is like a scalpel.
It's REALLY SHARP-so be careful or get a cut resistant glove. I bought the stainless steel mesh one after buying several 'cut resistant' cloth ones (not cut or poke proof-just slows the balde down so you don't hack your finger off, but you can easily poke through a cut resistant glove and most didn't have protection in finger ends-so splurge on the stainless mesh one (read carefully-I bought one that said stainless steel wire and it had a single strand woven into the kevlar fiber-and when I got it, I was leery and tried snipping off a finger tip and it snipped right off! So I ordered my stainless one, which offers velcro like grip on fish too).

Angelo Sellas : Wonderful filet knife. Super sharp!
Best filet knife there is. Comes in different sizes too. The blade is incredibly sharp and durable. Only downside is the leather changes color when it gets wet.
donbridger : Sharp
It sinks im vase you're wondering
P. Johnson : Only knife in the kitchen!
The only knife in the kitchen (even though it is marked only for cutting fish fillets). These knives are incredibly sharp (even kind of scary sharp).
Some years ago we found one in the surf at the beach. It was somewhat nicked and very dirty, but we picked it up anyhow. It cleaned up pretty well and it was amazingly sharp. Wife liked it so well that she used it for nearly everything for more than ten years (no way of knowing how old it was considering its source). Recently one day when she was using it, the blade snapped off back in the handle. She couldn't live without it so I ordered another and it's even sharper.
Doss Ramsey : Great Buy
Excited to pick up one of these knives after reading positive reviews online. I've been fishing a long time, but got this one ahead of a packrafting trip scheduled down the Amazon next month. Should make light work of the lunkers we'll be eating as we go! Sharp as a razor right out of the box.
Donald H. Crum : Veryyyy good blade!
Cannot beat this fillet knife!

Shane Green : Small fish fillet knife
Blade alot shorter than i though or payed attention to. Good for smaller fish
Pam McGregor : The best
We have bought many of these knifes and give them as presents. They are great for deboning anything, cleaning fish and everything else you do with a knife. Just take care of the wooden handle and it will ladt forever.
emmanuel : sleeve is super cheap, like paper!
very cheap case for it. showed it to my wife and she put it back in the sleeve and sure enough got cut real bad on her hands. i truly wouldn't recommend this product. Returned it asap! that's what I get for being cheap!
Chad Overman : Nice but a lil bit small
a little smaller than I'd hoped, probably because I didn't pay more for the size up. whoops
Kk : Greatest
I bought this for bro in law. Keen fisher. He says best knife ever
Lorenzo Ceroni : Not as good as expected
Blade gets damaged really wasy
Cathy : Very sharp! Love it!
So sharp! Love it!
Sharon Huggins : Stay's Sharp
Works well.....
Cynthia Schoonover : Its a gift
Have not used it yet as it is a gift and the special day has not arrived. But I personally have several of these knives in a couple different sizes and this looks like it should perform as well as any I have.
Willossal : Lit
Cuts beautifully
F. Phillips : Simple and effective

Redwood : Very disappointed
Was disappointed at the sharpness and quality. I have had one since the 1980's and wanted another one. My old one is far sharper and made better than this new one. Very sad the quality no longer has the feel of a craftsman.
mb75142 : Seems to be as good as the old ones.
I’ve got the one I just bought and one that belonged to my grandfather (bought 50 years ago). Quality appears to be the same.
Dmitri : Rapala Fish 'N Fillet Knife with Sheath
Very sharp and nice looking knife
Di : Great knife
Great, inexpensive, sharp knife
james moore : Well priced fillet knife
Seems to domthe job, sheath is cheaply made but protects the blade.
Andrea : Well made
Sharp and well made
Kk : Greatest
I bought this for bro in law. Keen fisher. He says best knife ever
Cathy : Very sharp! Love it!
So sharp! Love it!
Lisa Billings : Excellent
Excellent product that will last for many years to come and very fast shipping thanks
Joseph Madden Jr. : Chinese garbage
I had to replace my 40 yr old Rapala knives, I had fileted literally tons of fish with it, everything from brook trout to mako shark and tuna.
Made in China, looks cheap, feels cheap, had absolutely no edge. I had to sharpen it but I have no confidence in the edge lasting very long.
Gloria Gamron : Highly recommend
Great knife. I also purchased the 4 inch.
Cambridge Jubilee Blue 20 Piece Set : Five Stars
Great Product
deb : Great kitchen knifee
I had one of these for over 30 years and wood finally gave out under the metal part. Bought 2 news ones. It is in constant use. I peel potatoes, slice tomatoes, prepare veggies, cut meat with it. It’s a great kitchen knife. Use the longer one for cleaning fish but doesn’t fit my hand as well.
