Is there a bigger doofus than Aaron Martens? 2024

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

Started off yesterday with watching Ultimate Match Fishing - he complained when he lost the coin toss and then had a minor freak out when he ran to his first spot and there was somebody fishing in the area - finally Joe Thomas asked the guy if they could fish around his and the gay said "year".  Then he whined about the "over-the-line" calls (this is common on the show, but he has to whine about it).

Then this morning watched the Guntersville tournament - same thing, wanted to fish a spot and there were boats all over it - said to the guys "do you know I'm leading this tournament?" - "I'm fishing for $100 K!" Then called one of the other guys a "liar" when he said he was pre-fishing for a tournament the next week.

The boy can catch fish - I give him that - but what a terrible spokesman for professional fishing.

fishing user avatarslider head reply :

I agree he is a whiner. Finishing runner up in 3 or 2 (?) classics has to be crushing.

At work we have to attend several rah rah classes each year. One of mine a couple years back was not making excuses. The thing lasted a couple hours but the quick breakdown of the whole thing was people who constantly make excuses or whine were basicly trying to explain or offer reasons for there own mediocrity. By offering excuses or blaming something else they were rationalizing thier own shortcomings. Anyway alot of what I heard in that speech made alot of sense. Especially when it comes to fishing.

I broke this rule the other night and tried to blame hooks. Now 2 days removed I realize I did something stupid that cost me 3 good fish.  My first reaction was to blame the hooks and not except my errors but now I know I have nobody to blame but myself.  >:(

fishing user avatarTin reply :

I think he clearly has some form of an anxiety/social disorder. But then again Fourbizz complains like him... ::)

Must be a Cali thing.

Could be. I'm diggin' that new avatar Tin!

fishing user avatarTin reply :

4 game set with them this weekend!

fishing user avatarClark Stewart reply :

I agree. It's way more fun to keep your mouth shut in the midst of adversity and then prevail - then soak up the admiration. I'd rather get crapped on and come out on top then be on top and ***** and moan to stay there.

fishing user avatarcbfishalot reply :

He is a POW!!!

His head has cost him more tournament wins then his fishing ability.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Interesting post and answers.

I remember when Ike went ballistic and everyone got on his case.

He did not cry, he just went nuts.

Now, we are getting on Aaron's case for being emotional and trying to win a tournament.

I guess pressure does different things to different people.

And Tin, Yankees win 3 of 4 this weekend at Boston?????  :D   :D   :D

Why would he complain since he won the coin toss?

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

I have said this before and still stick by it, this is how they like to portray him on TV.  You hardly ever seen him on television without these moments cut in.  He's a helluva fisherman, probably one of the most well rounded out there, IMO.  Does he get a little whinny, yes but people deal with adversity different.  Plus it's about what is interesting for television, even though they are fishing shows, the FISHING takes a back seat to the antics of certain anglers while on the water.

Probably the truest thing I have ever seen on this forum.  Aaron is an incredible angler and is completely chill.  The moment he mutters some stuff under his breath it is played over and over.

fishing user avatarpowerman970 reply :

I am fortunate enough to have Aaron as a member of my website and I can say from experience that he is a stand up guy.  He will break his back to help the guys on my site out and is a truly classy guy.  Maybe he handles pressure a little differently than some guys but I can't fault the man for being passionate about his fishing and before anyone starts hurling insults, consider the fact that he must be doing something right considering the success he has had and continues to have.  Aaron is one of the good guys and in his day to day life he demonstrates that continuously.

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

I met Aaron at this year's iCast event, at the Sunline booth.  Talked fishing with him for about 30 minutes and not once did he seem standoffish as some of the pros seemed during the event.  He was very informative and offered advice to other attendees that approached him while we were talking. In my opinion he is a great person and angler.

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

I dont have any issues with Aaron or his TV 'attitude'. He's a great fisherman who is 'living the dream'. I'm actually a little jealous of the guy.  ;D

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

When I started this thread I pointed out that he is a really good fisherman and not ever having had a personal encounter with him I can only defer to what you guys that do know him say about him personally.  I just find his "whinning" to be unnecessary and not a good image for professional fishing.

In my own club, we are in a situation right now where some of the "better" fishermen "took their spot" or didn't fish it the way they wanted them to.  All this just seems so unnecessary.  Maybe others on tour do the same thing and it doesn't get recorded and played back, but I can only recall one of two times where others seem to complain as much as he does.  One of them involved Gerald Swindle and I was very disappointed in him at the time.  Aaron seems to do it a lot.  It would seem that getting in his head is easier than getting into a $1 movie.  Is there some connection between that and the number of 2nd places he has recorded?

fishing user avatarskeetermike reply :

Sounds a lot like whinning to me.  In those match fishing deals someone needs to throw the ref. overboard for some of those cross the boat cast calls he loves to make....give it a rest dude!  I can see where Aaron got miffed about that crap.  Someone being on your fishing hole, that sucks too, we've all been there.  So could be whinning or could just be stressing too.  Still kinda sounds like whinning to me though.

So the referee should disregard the rules?

fishing user avatarK.Fox reply :

Stop "whinning" about Martens "whinning."

fishing user avatarnitro929 reply :

i know for a fact that after one show the next year they made more rules and adhere to them can you name the show

fishing user avatarskeetermike reply :

I'm fine with rules being adheared to but half the time there isn't a casting violation in the first place.  I mean we all watch it there on the tube and majority of the time it's close, maybe borderline, but the ref. gets carried away most of the time.  I would be good with you pick the spot one time and then next spot is #2mans... and as long as there isn't line contact let them fish at will.  Afterall if I contol the boat and I know I'm going to get my pick every other time as to the place I get 1st chances when we get there.  Ref. takes the fun outta it seems.

fishing user avatarGKramer reply :

Here's a topic I admit I know absolutely nothing about. But apparently, neither do most Americans. I pulled it off the web. It might not have anything to do with anything here. I'm probably a million miles off target. But the one good thing it has done is it has stopped me from throwing anymore stones:

"Some of us may appear selfish or self-absorbed or egotistical because we do not respond adequately when someone says something...

"We may look childish in some or all situations because we seem to overreact to things that other people would not react to at all. We may seem gullible and naive, and some people out there will take advantage of that. You may wonder why we never seen to learn that there are people in the world we can't trust.

"Others may appear almost paranoid, trusting no one at all. Some might seem "psychotic" because of our eccentric behaviours or suspiciousness....

"Some of us might appear like loners, or eccentric loners. Some of us might appear as the opposite -- people who try hard to be social but don't know how.

We might look heartless because we do not have the same emotions you do, or more often don't show them in the ways you expect. We might look too sensitive, or too insensitive, or both. We might seem too immature or too mature, or both."

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

Autism is something I know about - are you saying that Aaron has an autistic condition?  If so, that might explain some things, but I have never seen this or heard anything about it.

fishing user avatarGKramer reply :

Shad Master: No. I don't know. But we had an Aspie teen in our home for 11 months last year, and I ran back across some of the stuff my wife and I were researching. No diagnosis offered--I was just looking at my own attitude toward the TV clips (and anybody else I might be hard on) and wondered if I was being too tough. Have to admit, the guy is a virtuoso bass fisherman.

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

Okay, thought you might be on to something there - I have said all along "the boy can catch fish" - just seems to me like he gets too whacked out about things and doesn't make himself a good image for professional fishing.  The back-to-back episodes of Ultimate Match Fishing and then a Bassmaster re-run was too much for me not to blow off some steam.

fishing user avatarMottfia reply :

I do think Gkramer is on to something. We just don't understand one another all that well. We get to thinking that everyone should think and act like us and that causes us to act conversely to people that don't.

Just think of the different things that sets you off that probably wouldn't set others off. Aaron fishes for a living so he is bound to be a little more uptight about all things fishing. I'm still not saying that he is a whiner cause I know that I can lose my cool over a NCAA football game. Doing the comparison, he has more of a right to be mad than me.

Based on what everyone says and the pros that I know that know him, he's a good guy with a funny cali way of talking, but more importantly he's a normal guy like you and me with mad fishing skillz making the best of what he's got.

Mottfia

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

I don't know him personally and apparently lots of people think he is great guy - he may truly.  I only know that if I came across on TV the way he does, I would hope that some of the people who like me would point it out to me and tell me to knock it off.

fishing user avatarbassinri reply :

He may be an excellent fisherman but he acts like a baby. I remember one Elite T where someone was fishing near him and he complained about it all day. Its hard not for TV to show him whining when thats all he did all day. It started in the morning and was still going on at the end of the day.

fishing user avatarBassCanada reply :

I was having issues with the bass club I was in a few years back and wanted an outside opinion.  I read an article on Aaron Martens and he sounded like a genuine guy, so I shot him an email asking for advice.  Lo and behold, he replied within a day with a good, honest 500+ word response that really told me what I needed to hear.

Any Professional angler who would take the time out to write to someone he doesn't know or owe anything to, is anything but a 'doofus.'

fishing user avatarSam reply :

And people got upset when Ike went ballistic.

Martens wants it his way so get of the way.  :)

fishing user avatarGlenn reply :

Well folks, everyone is human and we all make mistakes.  Whatever was going to be said has been said on both sides, so it's time to say g'night Irene.
