Professional Bank Fishing 2024

fishing user avatarTexas Hawg Hunter reply :

Does such a thing exist?  Or bank fishing tournaments? In some countries like Japan, bank fishing is more popular than boat fishing.

I bank fish more times than not.  One could argue that the restrictions placed on water access and technology like sonar increases the difficulty and thus the "sporting" aspect of bank fishing.

fishing user avatargardnerjigman reply :

I've never heard of it if there is.

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

This would be a sight to see. Instead of running 70 mph to your next spot, you have people running around the banks twisting ankles and falling in the water.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

There sure is. European match fishing is a very big sport. Most lakes in the UK don't even allow boats. Commonly, very long poles are used, they have slingshots to propel chum and contests are won by total weight of fish, regardless of species.

Nice, I'm gonna have to youtube that!

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

I could see Iaconelli mowing down other competitors and climbing trees to get a better cast.  :lol1:

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

This would be great. I've thought of hosting bank fishing tourneys, and am seriously contemplating doing one this summer. I've hadd big get together of bass fishing from the bank. They were actually quite fun, I would have probably 8 guys and we'd fish for a good long while and eat a picnic style meal. Called them 'fish outs'

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

Would you carry a fish tank for your limit?

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I strongly suggest y'all take a trip down to the International Bass Fishing Section.

The guys in Cyprus have tournaments where they hike miles in mountainous terrain to catch bass.

fishing user avatarwisconsin heat reply :

Well with like 90+% of shore access to many bodies of water being private land I think this would be a hard thing to do. There is just not enough room for people to spread out and fish.

Now this is funny! And probably fist fighting!

I don't think that has any merit.  Most lakes have parks etc... around the shores and most ponds are public and accessible all around.  Besides, this would create a new market for professionally designed ponds to maximize fishing competitiveness which would be pretty cool

There are many many lakes that are on state owned land. Besides, in match fishing, you don't spread out. Each angler is given a narrow spot to fish, and then they move to the next spot like the Match Fishing TV show except the areas are MUCH smaller. They are looking for EVERY fish. Minnows, carp, bluegills, whatever bites gets put in the bag. Small ponds are commonly fished.

I just youtubed European Match Fishing and came across this video of a pond fishing tournament, pretty neat

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Sitting in a tree yelling "never give up!"

And yes, if you have a pond or small lake with access around it you can have a fun tournament with a bunch of guys.

Everyone has a scale and weigh their bass as they catch and release them.

Person with highest weight or number of bass wins.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I've always wanted to put one together at my favorite pond. They would be a blast.

Well, from reading the previous posts, it looks like the Europeans are way ahead of us in that regard!

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

I remember watching a video about bank fishing where he was with his buddy. His buddy said he bank fished a lot and I believe that he mentioned doing some bankfishing tournaments...

I'm curious, are there any rules against bank fishing in big pro tournamnets? Lol like what is stopping you from going to the bassmasters classic and fishing from the bank/dock lol

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it is illegal.

You have to be at least touching the boat I believe.  You ever seen that clip with Iaconelli where he breaks off on a bass and jumps in the water to grab the line?  He had one hand on the boat while he was in the water.  So I guess if they left a foot on the boat and one on the bank they could, but there might be a rule against bank fishing in general. I'm not sure.

fishing user avatarTexas Hawg Hunter reply :

Ok, all this talk about starting clubs, tournaments etc... spurred me to action.  I'm going over to the local fishing forum and posting an announcement to form a bank fishing club in the DFW area.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

There are numerous bank fishing tourneys and clubs in my area. Very common around  the large metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia, Washington DC, New York, and Chicago. They typically break down into two groups, one being carp only targeted events, and the other being "all species" bank angling. The carp only events tend to utilize the Euro style of carp angling to a large degree (buzzers, long rods with reels, specialized gear, etc,), and the bank angler clubs use the long fixed poles and floats like in the video. There is also some crossover between the two. Then there is the whole pay lake fishing atmosphere which is pretty big in the Southeast part of the US. I actually find that the degree of technology/precision used in these events matches or rivals that of bass angling. Rather interesting, whether you would ever fish that way or not.

They have stuff like that for kids. I think they are generally called "derbys" and you can use anything I believe for bait. They have them at little ponds or lakes.

Match fishing tournaments are to kids derby's as Major League Baseball is to T-ball.

Yep ^^^ These guys take their match tourneys as serious as any competitive bass angler does, probably more so. In fact, there is a world match fishing competition every year, where each country sends their own team to represent and compete. Check this report out from the 2014 event: http://www.matchangler.com/international/world-champs/413-holland-rise-england-fall.html

I also found some vids of UK guys using similar equipment for fishing in the saltwater surf.  Similar long reel-less pole except they actually cast the thing in a semi-running type motion and set the pole on a tall tripod rest...pretty interesting.

Some British saltwater tournaments on "the totally awesome fishing channel" on youtube.  Also some very cool bank fishing for monster carp on the Nash Channel or search youtube for Urban Banx.

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

One option for holding tournaments would be to score them by length (catch-photo-release). We do this in our kayak bass fishing tournaments. We get an unique ID that must be in the photo with the bass (and we have standardized with using the "hawg trough" for getting an accurate length measurement).

fishing user avatarEmersonFish reply :

I'd like to participate in a bank fishing bass tournament. I think a system like the one Turtle135 describes would work fairly well. I remember there being bank fishing tournaments for flathead on occasion back in Kansas, which I never got to do, but it would have been fun.

fishing user avatarzeth reply :

There are bank fishing tournaments here in Cali.  Never fished one never will. Marin bass club has them.

fishing user avatarCDMeyer reply :

I have never heard of anything like that but that would be a interesting twist on things
