releasing a record bass 2024

fishing user avatarel_jewapo reply :

would any of you guys release a record bass? i don't know where to find the stories now, but i've seen a couple of pictures of bass in california that supposedly break the world record, but they released the fish without getting it verified.

are you guys that adiment about catch and release?

for me the answer is not no but h*** no! that's a million dollar fish!

on top of that, a bass that big can't have much time left. i wouldn't be at all surprised if the fight ended up killing it.

fishing user avatarBD reply :

I would and already promised the man upstairs I would.

fishing user avatarGobbleDog reply :

I don't catch and release because I'm Mr. Conservationist / Nature Boy.   I release fish because the last thing I want to do after a long day of fishing is deal with a dead stinkin fish.  But a Record Breaking Bass? Dead or alive, that fish is coming home with me!  I've got a few reasons:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,

MY NAME IN THE RECORD BOOKS,

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,

Giant stuffed Bass on my office wall,

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,

and more money.

:)

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Not a chance, that girl's coming home with me!

I've paid my dues with lots of big fish, I won't even keep a personal best. The real dilemma is a near record. The guys in California are releasing 20+ lb fish, now that's impressive.

My fishing partner released a 10 lb smallmouth that I netted and weighed. Man, that was tough.

fishing user avatarBD reply :

The posts where you guys say no way...you can always keep the fish in the livewell until someone can come weigh the fish and get it certified.

fishing user avatarMuddpuppy reply :

Used to I wouldn't have although we often released some nice fish none of them were close to being that nice.  Anymore, I think I might, now I would not have it mounted but I might donate it to like the Share Lunker Program here or something of that nature, if I didn't realease it right away.  I would like to try to get a few photos.   I really dought I would see much gold no matter what I did with the fish.

You're definately going to make some endorsement money if you catch a 22+ lb Largemouth Bass.

fishing user avatarel_jewapo reply :

i wouldn't mind releasing it if i could get it verified on the lake, but where i fish that is not going to be an option.

and you also have to remember that a bass is losing weight the whole time you have it, even in a live well.

i'm talking about these people that release record bass without getting them certified. i need the money and prizes too bad to think about doing that!

fishing user avatarel_jewapo reply :

you would make millions in endorsments! you would be in every out doors magazine, i'm sure you would get to fish with the pros on tv. it would be like winning the lottery.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Your odds are better winning the Powerball lottery, that's only about 129,000,000 to 1.

fishing user avatarBD reply :

Yeah I doubt money is going to come your way, except for maybe the lure you used to get it. (strike king for example might endorse you for the worm you used), but more than likely, they'll pay you for using the photo/credits and give you a years supply of lures lol

I would release it and have seriously thought about it. Plus once you catch the record, someone else will break it. You can still have your name in the books=get it certified.

Big real dead fish on my wall collecting dust, or a replica collecting dust...I'll go with fake.

fishing user avatarel_jewapo reply :

say you catch it on a worm, you will get money from the manufacturer of the worm, the hook, the line, the rod, the reel and whatever else you use!

can you imagine the surge of sales the company is going to get for the product that caught the world record largemouth bass? you will be a very rich man, trust me.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Would I release it ? yes I would release it or donate it to the fisheries department, money ? oh well, I 'm happy with what I have, don 't need more but it the lure manufacturer wants to give me a lifetime supply of baits I 'm not going to think it twice.  ;)

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

I always release my fish, 'cause if I don't, I can't catch them tomorrow ;).  But having said that, there is a magic number that I hold dear in my heart and when I reach that magic number, that fish is going on my wall!  If it happended to be a record, you can bet I will get it verified and probably put it where other folks can see it.

fishing user avatarel_jewapo reply :

i still think a bass that big has got to be pretty close to the end of its rope anyway.

fishing user avatarbasskid1 reply :

If i was lucky enough to catch a 22+lb i would buy a new house and build a pond and put that lunker in there for safe keeping

I would be happy to accept all that they wanted to hand me. But if I was to be skuttled around to Wal-marts signing lure boxes ... forget it. Fishing is like every thing else it's the promotion that will get you the the big bucks.  And that's what I am not sure if I would want to endure.  I probably would have dropped the anchor out and hit the fish in the head, rendering her unconcous to begin with.  I am sure if I was stareing down the gullet of this massive fish these thoughts would be going through my mind.  Like I said in the beginning I might throw it back/ might not.

fishing user avatarplaymaker47 reply :

haha if i ever caught the world record bass theres nothing on this earth that would keep me from getting that fish weighed. you would have to be flat out nuts to throw back a world record that hasnt been broken in almost 70 years. and you would be a very very very rich fellow from all the endorsements not only from your lure and rod and reel and line you use but from all the fishing magazines and your states travel agencies could use you as a reason for people to come and go fishing.

fishing user avatarMuddpuppy reply :

If you are a tounement fisherman to start with, or wanting to get into it would help your carrier. At least as long as you can still produce. I fish and hunt largely to excape from the masses, not to be engulfed by them. Every idiot with a washtub and paddle would try to follow you around the lake. You couldn't ever go back and pick up anouther xxx bait, no matter what it was you last bought. Then when they still do not have any luck you will hear about that. I am sure the first 15 minutes of fame would be alot of fun. The problem would be the following year of pain in the_____, but to each their own. I would like the recognition, but if I tried to get much more out of it I might end up ruinning what I enjoy most about the sport to begin with.

There will be a lot of money dished out from that one fish.  Even in the 80's it was considered a million dollar fish.  The problem is there will be so many hands out, trying to get a piece of it, that if your not careful it could be the most expensive fish any one has paid to catch.

fishing user avatarYankee_lake reply :

first of all any bass 7-8lbs plus out of my lake get mounted so theres your answer..

the record hasnt been broken in 70 years?? wheres that bass out, was it mounted i dont believe it, technology has changed maybe it was wieghed wrong.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I already have I caught the  smallest bass ever on rod and reel and released it in front of sevral witnesses

fishing user avatarChris reply :

I have caught and turned loose many wall hangers that I have been lucky enough to catch through the years but a record bass.. I think I would need to keep it mainly because If I turned it loose someone might be lucky enough to catch it again and beat my record. Sorry its going in my livewell but I will tell you stories about it and show you the nice mount if you like.

(cut and pasted story of George Perry)

The most coveted record in fishing was was set almost 73 years ago - in Georgia . Despite the best efforts of 60 million anglers nationwide, it has weathered the challenges of time.

George Perry was just 19 years old that morning - June 2, 1932 - when he cast his only lure into a blackwater lake in remote Telfair County - and landed a place in history.  Fatter than a fully inflated basketball - and 32 1/2 inches long - his 22-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass eclipsed the previous world record by more than two pounds.

Perry, a poor farmer, went fishing that day only because the fields were too wet to plow. His fishing spot, Montgomery Lake , was little more than a flooded oxbow off the nearby Ocmulgee River .

In a 1969 interview with Sports Afield magazine, Perry recalled the famous strike: "All at once the water splashed everywhere. I do remember striking, then raring back and trying to reel, but nothing budged," he said. "I thought for sure I'd lost the fish, that he'd dived and hung me up."

The mammoth bass must have been quite a sight as it sloshed toward the homemade boat Perry and his companion paddled among the cypress and tupelo trees that dotted the dark, tannin-stained water.

"I had no idea how big the fish was, but that didn't matter," Perry said. "What had me worried was losing the lure. It was the only one we had between us."

The lure, a perch scale Wiggle Fish, or Wigglefish, manufactured by the Creek Chub Bait Co., survived the battle, and the squirming bass was hoisted aboard.

Later that day, Perry and his companion, Jack Page, took their catch to the general store in nearby Helena , where the proprietor - a notary public - weighed and certified its dimensions and weight.

A customer mentioned a Field & Stream magazine bass contest, and encouraged Perry to enter his fish, which also was weighed and measured on certified scales at the town's post office.

Needless to say, the George Perry bass easily won the contest - and its $75 in prizes that included a rod and reel, and a new shotgun.

Perry's modesty prevented him from the incessant bragging that could have accompanied a bass half the size of the one he caught that day. In fact, he never even bothered to photograph the fish.

Instead, he did what most Depression-era anglers did with their catch: he took it home and ate it.

Perry later moved to Brunswick , Ga. , where he became a self-taught pilot and businessman. He died in 1974, at the age of 61, when the plane he was flying crashed into a hillside near the Birmingham , Ala., airport.

fishing user avatarel_jewapo reply :

i wonder how many times the record has actually been broken? from talking to my grandfather about fishing, i gather that if he had caught a fish that big, it would have never been reported or anything. he would have simply taken it home and eaten it. most old timers in those days would do the same thing. i doubt many of the records are actually the biggest fish caught.

fishing user avatarplaymaker47 reply :

the world record was caught on June 2, 1932 and im pretty sure it was weighed right because scales back then were probably pretty acurate. the bass wasnt mounted because George Perry's family had it for dinner.

fishing user avatarbassfisher02 reply :

a world record bass has a gaurenteed $1 million dollar payout...not to mention endorsments, and things like that. that world record could have been a carp, could have been a 10lb bass, could have been alot of things.....fact is, this was back when there wasnt much technology, the scales wernt acurate, and people didnt have all the guides we have today to tell them what the fish was......but who is to say it wasnt? if it was recorded as 22lbs 4 oz, then thats what is going down in the books...end of story. now, if i catch a 22lb+ fish, its goin to the live well, which we keep frozen cooler stiks in, the cooler the water, the less the bass sweats, then we will take it to the nearest tackle shop to get it weighed, then whatever else has to be done.....if the bass is still alive, it goes back to the place i caught it at....no exceptions...then i take my multi million dollars, help some people out, buy me a boat, and be set for life....who says fishin dont pay? or, i might just throw that bass back......because in the end, money isnt important, in the end, i will have what i have always had and wanted. so depending on my feelings that day, that bass might live to fight another day. and if someone catches it, then im fine with it, i caught it first 8)

lol, the fake ones look better. lol, but i still sould like to put that fish in a tank. lol, could you imagine that, a World record bass in a fish tank that you could go fishing for any time?  ;D

also, some people would sponcer you, becosue think of it like this, if you have a world record under your belt, and people see your name with a product, people will think he catches big fish with it, so they will buy it.

fishing user avatargamblerOH reply :

yankee_Lake, no offfense but why mount a 7-8lb largemouth. That is not really all that big of a fish. I live in Ohio and we dont have the huge fish that Fl. and CA. have but even here a 7lbr is not worthy of mounting, pictures for the scrapbook sure. It will almost always take over 5lbs to win big bass in our tournements, and I have seen several 6,7,8's this year so I dont think a 7 or 8 is worth the time and money to mount, much less taking some great genetics from your lake.

fishing user avatarBD reply :

If there is truly a million dollar payout, you could still collect and release the fish ;)

fishing user avatarbassfisher02 reply :

yes, its true, atleast a million dollar payout...not to mention how much basspro or cabelas would pay for it.  i agree, 7-8lbs down here is definitly not worth a mount...i have relesed 8lbers with out photos before....its almost regular where i fish to get a 8lb bass.....in the last few time i have been out i have averged 8lbs. and no, i dont fish stocked tanks. shadow, i feel strongly that a d**n newbie first time fisher with a hook worm and bobber is gunna hook the world record, that has just been how it is...just look, that possible world record crappie ws caught by a lady fishing for the first time. its beginners luck is all...and i think that the company will pay you for what you were using, but sponser...nah. you have to be in tournies to get sponsored anyways...and a first timer isnt gunna be in no tournies. i think it comes down to being in the right place at the right time. i have probally looked at the lake the world record is in, there are probally numerous world records out there, you just have to be where they are.
