How many of you think catching a fish on the first cast is bad luck?? I caught a fish on my first cast last night for the first time and I ended up only catching three tiny bass over a three hour period. Has anyone ever caught a bass on the first cast and went on to have a great day of fishing?
lol
Yep.
Don't worry about it.
Been there, done that. That's just part of the sport. :'(
catching one on the first cast and then getting nothing after, or small ones, is better than getting skunked! opening trout day, got one on my first cast. there was a tangle in the line when I casted, so i was getting it out, and got the fish. pulled the line in bare handed lol. I went on to catch my 6 fish limit in 6 casts.

No such thing as bad luck in fishing. If your on the fish your gonna get em. I have had days where I caught a fish on the first cast and then went on to get one the 2nd, 3rd and 4th cast.
I've never caught a fish on my first cast. That is pretty darn cool though.
I don't think it's bad luck at all. Just a matter of timing.
I have started off catching them left and right, and then, nothing.
I've also fished an hour or two without a hit, then cannot miss.
Sometimes it due to a change of scenery, a change of bait, or both.
Sometimes, the fish decide to cooperate.
It's what makes it a great recreational pastime. Frustrations and rewards.
It's always a challenge, and never boring.
I'm heading for the pond in the next few minutes. It's blowing northwestery about twenty, and cloudy. There are some things I "learned" yesterday on another pond, and am anxious to see if they apply to my home pond.
personally i love catching one on the first cast........
(doesnt happen all that often, but has many times in the past)
whether its a good or bad ***,
its sure is one heck of a way to start the day
I have caught a fish on the first cast twice that I can remember. Both times the rest of the evening went so-so. 90% of my trips end up being just so-so.
i guess im superstious i dump my fist cast so i cant get bite lol
Seems like the most important thing for me is holding my mouth right.
I do it's happened to me the last two trips. The first trip I caught a dink LMB on a tube, and only caught one more fish between me and my buddy. The last time out he caught a dink smallie and that was it.

I fished the other day for about an hour between a crankbait and a buzzbait, as soon as I put my tiki stick on I caught 9 in a row then never got a bite the rest of the day. I guess some times they are just finicky.
Not at all. Bananas in the boat, however, is another story.
Yeah, it's like birdie on the first hole.
hers a true story my friend bought a new ranger he went fishing about ten times never got bit so he said boat did not have fish stink yet so we went fishing him in hes boat me in mine later that day we me still no fish for him he said how you do i said well here look he got in my live well grabbed a fish and rubbed it all over his boat so he would have fish stinkl true story
haha this is funny to see here today because when I went fishing today I did catch a fish on my first cast. Then went without for almost 2 hours( I was thinking can this first cast Jinx be true hehe) Fortunatly I managed to get another 10 or so in the boat. even caught the biggest one (for me) at this lake so far this year 3lb 7oz
For me it is bad luck... or simply dumb luck. Like a birdie on the first hole it sets the premise for the whole outing in one cast. As dumb as this sounds... I want to 'work' for that first fish.
Happened to me about two weeks ago. Ended up catching 7 that day, so not bad.
We all know it's just in our heads but I always make my first cast, flip, or pitch of the day to unproductive water. If nothing else it confirms my reel settings are right.
Another superstition I practice is when I tell myself 'this is the last cast' that's it, or next trip will suck.
Roll Tide
I'm like Nitro and Estaban, I throw out into the open on my first cast, to get it over and tune the head and hand a bit.
I did get my pb on the second cast of a topwater popper. Came darn close to beating that today with a nice one that I had to really, really work for. (dropped rod into the lake and had to retrieve it, go home, get a backup and go back. I float fish so two rods can be a pain to deal with on the float, though I do that more often than a single.)
I'll take my fish when I can get 'em. What cast its on doesn't matter to me.

I don't know my lasts casts usually last more like a dozen casts or more.
But there is nothing more cooler than catching one on the first cast.
I think i'm the complete opposite of most here when it comes to superstitions, if I get a fish on the first cast, I think it's going to be a GREAT day!
better than catching nothing I always say
I have never caught a fish on the first cast.
I also don't it is bad luck if you do.
Me and my son went out this morning and he caught a nice 3lbs bass on the first cast and we did not get another bite the rest of the day! NOT ONE!!! So yeah I believe it is bad luck, at least at the moment.lol
Later,
I have caught many on my first cast and it is almost always a good day!
With a fish on the first cast the pressure to not skunk out is gone. It's happened to me a couple of times. Real confidence builder!
I don't think anyone has ever caught one on the "last cast" though. No one stops fishing just after catching one.
I read your post earlier today before I went fishing. We got there and my dad caught a fish on his first cast before we even untied the boat from the dock. After about an hour of no fish, I started thinking about your post. In the next hour after that, I caught 3 and my dad caught 1 more. I don't think it's bad luck, at least it wasn't for me.
Edit: I was having a great day a few weeks ago and near the end of my trip I was catching a fish almost every other cast. I decided when my last cast would be and caught one about 2 feet from the boat. I put the rod down and left happy ;D
Had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. First cast, 3lb'er. Next two hours I stood there in the rain and didn't catch a thing.
