Pre-Hooking Fish? 2024

fishing user avatarzaraspook_dylan2 reply :

Hey, I was wondering if this is true. I heard somewhere that some fishing shows are so cheap, that they pre-hook a fish, and make it look like the host or who ever, is catching it. Now I dont know if this is true, but who's to say they arent? ;)

fishing user avatarnoway reply :

Don't know if it's true.  But it wouldn't surprise me.

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

I don't know for sure, but I've heard it plenty of times that they do pre-hook the fish.  From a business standpoint you can easily understand it.  People are sponsored by a certain lure company so they obviously want to make that lure appear to be catching quality fish.  I'm sure that there are shows that don't.  Offshore saltwater shows would have a hard time of doing that kind of thing.  Bass fishing shows...yeah I could easily see that.

fishing user avatarZeNoob reply :

wouldnt be very much fun to watch a pro get skunked for 1/2 hr as he gives you tips on how to catch fish   :-/

fishing user avatarLittle Luey reply :

It would not surprised me at all.

Have anyone notice how some times the fish they show is not moving at all? I don't think I ever just pull a bass or any other fish that was not moving/shaking when I grab it.

IMO those may be the pre-hook fish they are completly exausted and they don't move anymore.

Also they do have to put in a few hours of footage to come up with the best 30 min for a segment I would think. I don't think they just film for 1 hr for a show, they probably use a full day's worth of fishing.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I read an article written by a former tv producer saying that fish are prehooked, at least on the shows he worked on.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Hmm...

Most fish water they know is very productive.

All are pretty good sticks, many probably have guides.

One segment might take a day or a week.

I highly doubt the fish are hooked up for these guys.

8-)

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

So...  trained pet fish for the topwater bites?  Too many uncut shots where you watch the cast and catch w/o a "cut" in scenes for me to worry about it.

I'm not saying it didn't ever happen way back when, but I seriously doubt any of the modern or popular shows would do this.  If that got out, no one would watch.  It's a career ender, IMO.

Besides, most people on this board could fill a 30 minute show on a decent lake, in a single day's time of filming.  So why would I think the "pro's" have to cheat?

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I think it's true! I also, heard that Bill Dance uses private reclaimed phosphate pits to film his shows. Fish are not lure shy there due to little or no fishing pressure. Also, they grow quickly and BIG!

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

I would not doubt it on some of the shows. Several shows have taken 3-4 days of filming to get 30 minutes worth of air time. It just depends on the timing of a lot of things.

If we had access to those pits, very few of us would ever go to a public lake again.   ;)  I love private water!!

fishing user avatarIdahoLunkerHunter reply :

I would say no. The talent is out there, if they couldn't catch fish on the lure they are promoting why would they use it... Look at City Limits or a Day on the Lake. Real time fishing shows show that even Pro's get skunked sometimes.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

I know for a fact that fish are pre hooked, and there are other shenanigans as well.

I have heard this from people I trust who have been there.  I guess it's like anything else.  Some shows are legit and won't do it while others are bogus.

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

For those who are sure this is done, would you name some of the shows where it occurs?

I believe it probably happens but I have no evidence to support my opinion.

fishing user avatarSnowBass23 reply :

I'm sure stuff like that happens. It is tv after all. When I was a kid I was amazed that whenever I'd watch a fishing show, in the space of 30 minutes (with commercials even! ;D) the ycould catch back to back big bass. Then when I got a bit older I realized how the time of day/clouds/conditions all can change through the course of a 30 minute show(clearly several hours of fishing). It's never been the same since then! :o

Fishing shows are not just a camera man filming some one fishing for only 30 mins.... Of course the clouds are going to change because some of the shows take a couple of days to get the footage that they want.. I think most shows now a days are legit.... But i do think they pre hooked fish in one of scott martins shows for one of his sons.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

In Bill Dance's case they couild have spent a few days shootin a 30 min. show...what with all his accidents and such..lol.....jk

fishing user avatarDock Master reply :

It's kinda hard to pre-hook a fish if they are doing a topwater show don't you think?

Top water yeah.

fishing user avatarmrlitetackle reply :

maybe so, but im hoping not....................

but then again...............maybe so    :'(

fishing user avatarNBR reply :

I agree with Road Warrior. Years ago I attended a talk given by Joe Foss. He said it took 5 days of filming to produce a 30 minute program

fishing user avatarCODbasser reply :

what is there to really learn from bill dance these days anyway...yeh he explains what hes doing...but like mentioned above...he fishes private locations...most of that info is usless to most bass fisherman..watch bassmasters...they are just recorded tournaments...i dont think someone fishing for 100 grand is gonna take the chance of loosing a fish so he can land it in front of the camera... ;)

fishing user avatarTriton21 reply :

There is one Host that I wouldn't trust. I belief he is capable of anything IMO.  I was a close personal friend of Billy Westmoreland and have seen him shoot a show in a day on Dale Hollow.  He knew a lot of Smallies by their first names and their address.

fishing user avatarmase088 reply :

I seriously doubt anyone is currently doing this. Like others said, the talents out there. And with exception to Bill Dance, its not like they are pulling in 5lbers one after another, they catch small fish too. I've seen several shows where they didn't catch a fish over 3lbs all show.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Stop while your only a thousand miles behind. Bill still competes in

certain events on the catfish tour and has won two or three times.

How many fully loaded boats have you won recently?

(and yes i know that will never happen lol) be nice if it would though... as for how many boats have i won...well i havent won any...havent fished for any...a good friend of mine has won several boats he also won the fed nation national championship a few years ago...must be nice huh lol..maybe one day i will have the chance to fish for a boat.. :-[

No it isn't. There's more stuff to fish with, but bass haven't evolved into a different animal. If you could catch them years ago you can still catch them now.

fishing user avatarCODbasser reply :

i didnt say bass are different....i said bass fishing is different...fishing pressure has multiplied by thousands....more people fishing tournaments....
