Thanks to trespassing/ littering bank fishermen, I can no longer fish one of my favorite large ponds. The absentee owner of the land has re-posted everything and changed the locks. Prollie same crowd that became verbally abusive and racists with me because they saw me release a few good bass and saw me let a 4lber he went even more nuts from the other side of a 18 acre pond.
We even put trashcans where they were fishing, and they didnt use them and eventually stole them.
From now on if i have permission to fish, I am gonna be an A-hole if the people aint supposed to be there....

We try to stay proactive with this issue as well.
Our lake is semi-private and every time we go, we make sure to grab any and all trash we can find, no matter what. I've scaled banks, climbed hills and made my way through some ugly bramble patches to retrieve trash. Most of it is just discarded out the car window by residents themselves, or people that use that road to travel to and from their destinations, not by anglers. This doesn't mean that the people who live there wouldn't be quick to blame us "outsiders" so we pick up everyones trash and give them no ammo.
The place is just too special, not to mention that the residents who do know us personally and allow us access are being kind enough. It's the least we could do to help keep their neighborhood clean for them IMO.
Alos,..BE SEEN doing it so there is no question that the guys with the boat "most likely" aren't the culprits as they are often seen walking the road, looking for cans, cig packs etc.
Nothing burns me more than seeing someone blatantly and casually tossing a can or something out the window. It's obvious that the car behind them (me) can plainly see!! It's like they don't even know it's wrong. Are there still people out there who are THAT ignorant or are they just THAT pitiful?

I fish a couple ponds where the litter is BAD. You would need to leave several hours early, just to pick-up all the litter that you'd see. And you would need several bags. Needless to say with the amount of trash there, it really is useless to grab what you could because there is so much more, unless you have a couple days. So I decided to do something about it. I contacted the county parks maintanence director, and Chris Horton from B.A.S.S. and have started the wheels turning for a clean-up project for both parks, and possibly a few more. I would also like to construct used line recepticles to place down on the water so anglers can throw the line into something instead of on the ground which is also a big problem at the ponds. Maybe the effort will carry over to other parks, and folks will stop littering all around the ponds. It really is NOT hard to put it in your pocket to throw away later, or walk to one of the numerous garbage cans to toss out your garbage.

It seems like people think that they have someone following them around picking up after them. Any time I see someone litter I call it in to the local HWY dept and give them the liscense tag #. It only takes a few IDIOTS to make it hard on the rest of us. >

Great topic. It seems to me that the people with the best ponds have no interest in fishing and your lucky to get permission to fish these large ponds due to that Idiot we have all have met or ran into that throws his crap everywhere and keeps every thing he catches with no regard to the property owner, the effects on the pond, and nature in general. I've lost permission on two ponds due to these jerks who never even had permission to fish them. you know you in trouble when you start finding beer cans around your pond, Beer + Idiot = loss of fishing hole!
I wish we could shove a can up their bum so they can see how long it takes to biodegrade.

i remember one season i was fishing in minnesota....i saw a Loon in the water going crazy....i got close to it and it had fishing line all wrapped around its neck and tangled up in one wing...i tried to grab it to help it, but of course it didnt know i was trying to help and it swam off.....about a week later i was on the other side of the lake walking the shoreline casting...i saw a dead Loon washed up on shore....with fishing line tangled in its wing and around its neck...from the amount of line i saw it appeared to be line that someone had thrown out,,,,not a piece of line left over from having a snag

We do have it pretty bad. Thing that ticks me off is especially at gorton pond right near the bank before the police station most of the trash is clearly from anglers. I think people should be more harsh on littering. Next time you see someone throw something on the ground rub their face in it, smack them on the nose and tell them how bad they are.

The lake I usually fish is right here on the campus of James Madison University. That being the case, there is tons of trash, mostly beer cans. I can't really do anything about it because most of the trash is out in the water and I can only bank fish. SOmetimes it gets so bad that I have to wait for a big rain storm to clear out the trash from the area I fish (right below the feeder creek). I wish I could get everyone to stop littering, but the trash comes downstream from downtown Harrisonburg and I just don't think there's a way to get people to care, especially because only a dozen or so people actually use the lake at all.

why would other people go nuts if you released a fish back into the lake? I would be happy because then I can catch it later...

that's crazy! Are these other fishermen really that desperate to get bass to eat? I mean, I could understand it I guess if they were homeless or something and really needed the food, but why eat them if you don't need to? It's not like bass are especially good tasting fish or anything.

not exactly the same situation but one of the good ponds i fish will only be here for one more year.the owner sold it to a company who is gonna build a shopping center right over top of it...behinf it there is another that isnt as good for fishing that willl have the same fate.i swear y the time i am older there wont be any ponds or woods left around here do to over developing > :'(

I was called a M.Fer and a racist this and that among other things from across the lake for releasing a 4 lb fish. Doesnt matter, Its free food i guess. I have a cousin that i dont fish with anymore that keeps everything no matter what it is or how big it is, just to keep it. I dont think some people's brains develop all the way...leaves them with a primate or rodent-like hoarding instinct.

I know you can get a boat in there but are you sure you can get one under the bridge? There are some decent sized fish in there as far as I know.

i was surprized at all the trash at our local resevior...this last summer when i volunteered to clean up the dam area (where most bank fisherman are) i took about 10 trash bags and filled them up within half a mile! it was terrible, most it was beer cans and bottles, but also fast food stuffs and old fishing packages...i was really dissapointed. but the lake i normally fish at is really nice so we try and keep it as clean as possible.

We are raising up a whole culture that takes no responsibilty for their oun actions and could care less about anything other than their own selfish gratification. One of my favorite things to do is, when I see someone throw down a piece of trash I go immediately and pick it up right in front of them. It's like handing them a STUPID sign. LOL

Not to mention all the local idiots who leave worm conatiners and those &^%477 Snelled hook things all over the shore. Im from Brooklyn and I always leave with trash thats not mine . Several of my other friends , who like me now live in rural areas have the same ethics I do. Well, let's not get into stereotyping.... or complaining/ranting. Focus your energy on solutions. I've seen all walks of life litter - sometimes by accident ("Hey there, you dropped something!", "Oh, Oops! I didn't realize it fell out of my handful of stuff I'm carrying."). And ya, some folks are just plain rude and don't care.
So.... what do you suggest to solve the problem?

Years back, a farmer gave my wife and I permission to hunt deer with bow and arrow.
One day after work I took my buddy along to get in a couple of hours of hunting before dark.
While suiting up to go on stand, I noticed that my friend tossed the wrapper of a candy bar onto the ground.
Not to embarrass him, I picked it up when he wasn't looking and tossed it into the trunk of my car.
On the next trip with me, my friend spotted and apparently identified the candy wrapper in my trunk.
With a very red face he asked, "Was that mine Rog?". I replied, "Yah Jim, it was yours".
Not another word was spoken, and I have a feeling that Jimmy learned a little something that day.

sucks man. i feel ya. i had a pond that i could catch 25 bass a day at times on. its were i caught my PB. well it was empty during the cold winter when i fished it but this spring has ruined it. theres an old man that takes 4 five bass out a day. big pregnant ones aswell. some a-holes poor in there old car oil, and a bunch of others take the bass home to. lets just say i strugle to get a bite anymore. im really mad

What if we had some kind of event at the big lakes in our areas for fishermen or people that just want to help out. Whoever brings in the most trash gets a new rod/reel or something like that. It would be cheaper for the city to buy a nice rod and reel then it would be to pay their guys to do it. Its just an idea and probably wont happen but I just wanted to throw my idea out there. I wont even get into people taking fish that they shouldnt be taking.

My grandpa would always say when we went camping: "Leave the outdoors in better shape then you found it."
The other day I was fly fishing near this dock and some idoit threw his wawa bag into the lake. Well that really ticked me off so I went over there with my waders and got it out of the water right infront of him. What are people thinking when they toss their trash into a lake when there is a garbage can 20 feet away? Geez I felt like giving him my peice of mind. I dont mean to sound proud, but I hoped it knocked some smarts into him to see that a 14yr old that acualy had the right outdoor morals than he didn't.
I mean DUH there is a garbage can right over there. Some people are just too lazy, other people just don't care, and most people dont do anything about it. The number 1 reason why people do not let anglers fish their ponds is becuase of litter.
Litter bugs drive me crazy.
