I was wondering if anyone has had mystery tackle box of longer than a few months and how they liked it? Ive had them now for approximately 6 months and i have every box upgraded to pro. They started out phenomenal but seems last few have a lot less stuff and what is in there seems pretty basic and this box even had one of the same items that was in last months box. Has anyone had a similar issue? Thoughts
I gave up. I really liked the idea, but got a few boxes that are sitting in my garage. I have a couple of baits that look good but most are taking up space.
I have been a member for a year. Been a pro box member since they first started offering it. Have loved every box. Just got my box this month. I don't hate it, but its the first one I don't absolutely love. I got a mango jog which I got 3 boxes ago and then those kietech fat impact rip offs which i got something very similar a few boxes ago as well. Its going to happen. I am more disappointed in the color of the lipless crank and the jerk bait, along with the size of the craws. Had those colors and sizes been different I probably would have liked it. They have a million baits to choose from and many sizes and colors too, so I don't expect to fall in love with every box, especially because everyone has different likes/dislikes. Still great product and will keep my membership for a very long time.
I do Lucky Tackle Box... same thing. I've gotten a repeat bait or two, and every box has at least something I'll never use, but for the $15/month, I'll be a subscriber until the day the company goes under. Got my latest box today, actually - I'm like a kid at Christmas, every time.
Got my box today and wasn't really that impressed. I've been a member for two months and haven't been wowed by either box. I'm gonna give it one more and if I don't like it I will probably cancel.
My MTB will be here tomorrow. Will be my trial box, standard box.
I have the pro
Kevin I got a standard box one time and was happier with it, than some of the pros. Enjoy it
Been a member for almost a year now and I've developed a pattern of thought about the MTB. At first I was like most other fishermen, super excited to receive my box every month. Then after 4 or 5 months, I realized that unless I went out of my way to actually use the MTB tackle, it didn't find its way into my regular arsenal unless we are talking about terminal tackle. The Ned Rig is one exception . Now I just open and take out what I know I will use, and have the rest packed away in a nice "unused" 3700 series or two. Next month, I upgraded to Pro so I will give it one shot, but I expect it's more of the same with a lot of stuff I wouldn't really throw over my "proven" stuff. IMO it's an excellent way to learn what works and what does't and exposes you to various baits that you wouldn't normally purchase, but I now realize that after a year of MTB, most of the stuff goes unused. Despite my best intentions, when I'm out on the water, my mindset switches from "I'm going to try this" to tried and true lures and plastics. If I had spent a years worth of MTB payments on stuff that I know is effective, I'd have some really good _____ (insert fav) stuff with quite a few backups. Not all will develop this thought pattern but, the half dozen or so MTB subscribers that I know, we all agree. Tight lines my fishin brothers...
I'm thinking about giving LTB a try. I checked out a ton of youtube vids and people seemed happier with what they got from LTB. I agree that it's really the Xmas appeal that brings me in. I've done a few Xmas exchanges on BR and really enjoyed them. I also agree that I've gotten pretty specific on what I need or like when I hit the water, instead of "This would be fun to fish!" . However one of the things I used to do when I first joined BR was decide to "master" a certain lure or technique each season. It started out with the frog, then the jig, ect ect. I think LTB or MTB might spark interest in learning something new and make me a better fisherman.
I've been really happy with MTB and i've had it for almost a year now. My 4th pro box should come today. I did the first two pros last fall, and did another one last month. The first box was spectacular. The second was pretty good. The one I got last month was "OK", although the thing disappointed me most was that I missed a Whopper Plopper by not getting the regular box.
I accepted from the beginning that some boxes would be better than others and that I would get things I wouldn't know what to do with or wouldn't be interested in, so that's not something that bothers me. I do have the issue where a lot of what I get in MTB goes unused, maybe half. But that's actually a better record than the lures I buy on my own. Maybe that's because I make more of an effort, but at the least, I'm evidently not any better than some guy at a desk a few states away at deciding what I'll actually use on the water. If I always knew with certainty that I wanted something specific, I'd just buy it myself and not get the box at all. I've also gotten some real gems in MTB that I never would have known about or bought even if I did.
I've also gotten boxes where I was underwhelmed, but other people got the same one and were super excited, and boxes I loved that other people were disappointed. I did LTB for a while, and it was good too, but it was actually a lot of the same stuff as MTB and after a few months it was all just too much of a muchness. LTB was a fine service, but when I have watched unboxings since I cancelled, I haven't found myself really wishing I had that box over the MTB I had gotten.
I've had both of the major monthly upgraded boxes for five months now and I'm going to cancel both. It's not because I don't like them, it's because I never really use the stuff I get in them.
I'd rather use the $50ish towards stuff I need to replenish every month.
i cancelled mine i'm not loving the baits that i get so now i am taking the money i spent and buying some lures that i want with it instead
I get both LTB and MTB and I go back and forth about weather or not to keep them. There are a lot of pretty common lure types/styles (jigs, most cranks, flippin/pitchin, drop shot) that I don't use, so about half of each box goes straight into my "to be traded" pile.
I would love it if the box choices were more granular (ie, being able to pick "No Hard baits" or "No Plastics"), but I realize that would really complicate their packing process.
Some time in the next month I am going to post a thread in the classifieds looking to swap all my unused box lures to see if anyone wants to trade with me.
I had MTB for about a year, then dropped out of fishing for awhile. I enjoyed the boxes I was getting, simply for getting lures that I wouldn't necessarily buy off the store shelf either due to price, availability, or wondering whether or not it would be a good lure. Out of the lures I received, only one of these is carried in my local walmart, which is where I do most of the my tackle shopping. BPS is over an hour away and I get lost in there lol.
I signed up for MTB again last month, and went with the pro option. My box came yesterday and I'm really happy with what I got. Pic is below. I also signed up with LTB Bass XL but joined too late to get this month's box.
LC
The main reason I started Mystery was to force myself into trying new baits. So far I've caught fish on MTB lures I had not tried before. It's working for me. My biggest problem is I'm running out of tackle box space.
WOW what a terrible box i just got. Barely worth the $5 trial and i would be very upset if i paid $15 for it.
a bright blue and orange spinnerbait (straight up power rangers colors)
sample pack of homemade beavers
sample pack of twin tail trailers
a jig that is total garbage, terrible head design and skirt fell apart when i took it out of the package
and a subsurface glide bait that looks like a crappie but says "bluegill".
i hate to see the youtube guys try for a slam with this box!!
Well after seeing what Kevin22 got this month I'm glad I made the decision to cancel my mystery tackle box subscription after 2 years. The boxes have been getting worse and worse. I haven't been very impressed with the pro box either. I really like the idea of getting new lures every month but not when it's from the Target or Walmart barging bin leftovers. I always seem to get the crappy box out of the 3 different ones they ship out every month. I was pretty happy with them the first year, but not now. After seeing what LTB sent out this month I may have to sign up with them. Looked like the had a good box this month. Goodbye MTB!
Before this thread gets locked..
I will say that I will try the glide bait, it looks like it has promise.
The trailers will be.. trailers. I can toss them in with the 5000 other bags of GP and black/blue trailers I have (im sure most of you do too!).
The jig I will reskirt and TRY, I trimmed the weed guard up a tad since it was as stiff as a 2x4, and the hook feels decent.
The spinnerbait I will cut the skirt off (its tied) and put on a real bluegill color skirt on (this skirt looks like a children's toy). The spinnerbait looks good, quality blades and components, a good looking head and a sharp hook... its just walmart clearance color.
Everything I will use, its just the plastics are basic stuff everyone has a million of.. the glide bait is so oddball that I'll probably forget I have it, and I have to "fix" the jig and spinnerbait to be able to use them. Its a box full of stuff you can toss to the bottom of your bag and never use, nothing exciting that makes me want to run to the lake. I know I sound like I am whining, but I really truly am disappointed... like others have said, its gander mtn/cabelas/walmart clearance items. All the unboxings I have seen on youtube have been 20 times better than this box.
Sounds like they did several pro boxes this month that are quite different. Here's mine:
Clockwise from top left:
-Gambler shakey shad (Bold)
-River2Sea S-Waver 120 (Party Crasher)
-Ima Pinjack 200 (Bluegill)
-3/8oz V&M Pacemaker Lightning Blade (Mouse)
-1/8oz Megastrike Cavitron (Chartreuse/Red)
-Skinny Bear drop shot hooks
(also: did not win the match-the-hatch)
That is a darn nice box! I would fish every bait in there with confidence. They are all name brand items with proven track records.
I did some more research on my box's baits. The unfair lures "bluegill" is a saltwater bait. I tank tested it and it looks like junk. It wanted to roll on the jerk, so looks like it is a spybait with no propellers... no wonder it has a swivel on it. Giving it away to the first person who asks me what it is lol
Because there is a chance you will get a box like mine. I can not recommend it to my friends. Sorry MTB! I really wanted to like it, because I have seen boxes like mlbass's box. I realize I didn't get a pro box, but you would think at least 1 bait would be a "good bait" I would trade my whole $26.02 valued box (thats actually what it says lol) for one bait out of the above box!
Well thanks for all the replies, think I'm going to give it another month before i decide to renew or not. The more I think about it, I'm in the same boat as some others, I get a lot of stuff that I never ever use. I def love the concept, its nice to come home from a day of work and have box waiting on you. Its like X-mas once a month. Maybe I'll try the LTB as well.
Well I just followed the link to LTB from above where it says to use "BASS10" and that didnt work, no biggie go ahead to place my order and tells me that there is an error with my address. Says multiple addresses were found, LOL. Ive never had the issue before. Guess I will stick with MTB.
Try save10
I'd rather just spend the money I'd have spent on that box at the local tackle store. I don't need a bunch of junk I'll never use because that's all I ever got out of my boxes. I got one frog themed box that didn't even have a frog in it???

What you said about the jig and the the unfair lures thing (whatever it is) is troubling.
But I'm going to push back on the spinnerbait -- skirt color is literally the last thing I care about for a spinnerbait, even in clear water. Seems to me if the rest of the components are good quality, that's approximately the value of the $5 you paid for the whole box even without the skirt. In any case, bass don't generally have a problem hitting "Citrus shad" squarebills, "Bubblegum" trick worms, and "Clown" jerkbaits...why not a "neon bluegill" (or whatever) spinnerbait?
I also don't think you can judge either MTB or LTB by a single box. I have definitely had great items in the regular box, including a lucky craft pointer and squarebill, rage tail, zman and biospawn plastics, more than one nice quality hand-tied jig, all over just the last few months. Partnering with companies to bring lesser-known baits to a wider audience seems to be an essential part of the business model, and I would suppose it comes with an inherent risk that some are going to be clunkers...not everybody is OK with that risk, and that's fair enough. But I think you can only get a sense of whether it's worthwhile in the long run. Like, see what have you accumulated after 3 months, and decide if it has been worth it in total.
I have tried LTB and MTB, and Tackle Grab back when it existed.
I personally don't like any of them. The worst part for me was getting knock offs or lures that were more like panfish lures than bass lures.
I have "discovered" a couple decent things from my boxes, but nothing I wouldn't have discovered walking down the aisles of a fishing shop.
The way I look at it is that I'd rather spend the money on lures that I really want and that I know will work.
That being said, I do understand why people like it, I just don't.

Rick, you mentioned awhile back on another post that LTB was going to have a "regional" option for boxes. Can you give any information on how that works? What exactly goes into deciding that a lure goes into one region's box vs. another region's box? Do you send swimbaits to california, punch rigs to florida, and ned rigs to the midwest, or something?
Guys,
Thak you for the helpful feedback. First off, to the handful of people who mentioned getting a duplicate item in their pro box, you should have received an email from us today explaining a small glitch our box assignment software had with some pro boxes and a notification that we pro-actively credited your account a portion of the purchase price because of that error. We fixed the error so it will not happen in the future. The new update we made does not only prevent you from getting duplicates, but it tries to send you the most unique box possible by looking at the types of baits in the last 3 boxes you received. We will be continuing to improve this algorithm in the next few months.
As far as the brands in the box and quality of the baits, we work with brands of all sizes and and we have seen many times over that big brand does not always equal best quality. There are many small brands that are unknown and have less flashy packaging that make some amazing baits. Of course there are some that make not so great baits as well.
With that being said, we are actively working on improving our quality control. Since we have grown so much over the past few years, we are ordering large volumes that are bigger than some companies have ever had to deal with before (even from big box stores). We have seen a few instances where manufacturers have had issues because of this because they had to speed up production to get us product in time, however we have always replaced the defective product when notified by subscribers and the issue has generally been very minimal.
We are appreciative of this specific feedback as it truly does make us a better company. We have a team of people worked my together to use feedback like this to make improvements in product planning, website features, merchandising, customer service, etc.
We do have a lot of awesome new things in the works that we think you will be excited about.
Thanks again for the feedback guys and feel free to DM us any more specific feedback or questions (or just post it here).
^^ impressive, professional response there MTB!
Saw a sneak peak of one of the MTB Pro boxes a couple days ago.. Like always, they're loaded with tons of value and all stuff I'd fish once or twice, but it's some weeeeird stuff. Came with the oddest Bagley deep crank (april?), soft plastic frogs, a pretty useless Livingston topwater, and a poorly tied jig. It's great on paper but it's more oddities than regular stuff. I get the "try new baits" concept, but I'd prefer you sending me a new brand of squarebill or another popular bait versus an extremely irregular deep crank.
I've gotten MTB, LTB, and the pro versions of both. To be honest I can't say one is really better than the other, they're so nearly identical in almost every respect. I somewhat prefer the MTB Pro box over the LTB XL, since they include Lucky Craft baits and the whole box is different, not just the standard box with a couple extra baits thrown in like LTB. The LTB standard box might have a slight edge over the MTB standard box, but like I said, they're so nearly identical it's hard to make a call.
I really enjoy getting them and probably will always get one or the other. Sure, there's some baits that I don't like or won't use much, but that's kind of a given in that they're not tailoring a box for you, they're sending them out to thousands of people. I just sell the stuff I won't use and I usually don't lose much money since I got a discount on them in the first place.
I have gotten some baits that have really worked well for me and opened up a new area of fishing. I.e., the Cabin Creek spider jig stuff was a real morale saver for me when I caught a bunch on them in January!

I actually redid and it worked, the code BASS10 still didnt work but I did order a 3 month BASSXL. Give it a shot and see how it goes.
MTB,
Thanks for responding, I hate to sound like such a cry baby. All of my boxes have been awsesome and i have alwasy been excited to open them when they arrive. The last 2 just didnt seem to be that great. I dont care about brand names, i just like seeing the different lures and how they will work. Also, again I know this is no minor but I miss the card with the about your box info. Now it says to go to a website. What a pain, i like the card better. I do love the boxes, which is probably why i was so bummed when the last 2 didnt have that wow factor. Thanks for responding on here. I was wondering when someone said this thread might get booted what would happen. Its nice to see a company that is willing to listen to its customers and want to help. Customer service like this is scarce these days, i will renew my subscription purely based on the fact that youll are listening and wanting to make your customers happy.
Thanks
I had the MTB for several months a year ago and since switched to the LTB box. No offence to MTB but the LTB so far has been a better box for me. Of course everyone has their own likes and dislikes.
I still get excited to get home and check out what's in the box. To me that is 1/2 the fun. I'm old and don't get goodies that are truely a surprise. I hate the YouTube unboxings as I try to avoid seeing them as my box usually runs a day or two later.
LTB I believe that is a great option to allow a all hard or all soft bait box option. Although my ton and a half of plastics needs no additional supply I will keep my box split. To me seeing a pack or so of some new soft plastic is nice.
I'm like most I really don't need any new baits. I am close to being a horder as is. I also have a old school tackle box I have started filling the trays with unopened baits I either didn't feel would work for me or maybe already had a duplicate etc. Really have no idea what I plan to do with them.
One last thanks to LTB this box was really nice. Hard swimbait was just like icing on a nice box. I am not a swimbait guy but with all the hype and your bait I will be trying it.
I love the idea of it and I KNOW I would enjoy getting the boxes...for awhile. It's just that fishing, like other hobbies, is so personal and we get very ingrained in our styles of fishing that I'm afraid that 90% of the stuff I would get, I would never use. Would rather buy stuff i KNOW I will use. Both companies seem VERY reputable and we are lucky enough to have access to the management of both. I may try it at some point.

No reason it should get booted so long as everyone is respectful. Honest feedback, both positive and negative, is very helpful to a company and these guys seem to be listening.
I got my MTB Pro today and I'm very happy. It seems to be different from the others on here and this is my fourth one. I've been happy with all so far. Some baits I may never use or not like using, but that's the fun part, trying them out. Anyway, here's what I got this month:
Bagley Diving B - reg. $9.39
Livingston Pro Sizzle Jr. - $11.99
Pepper Custom Baits Micro Jig - $4.49
Bruiser Baits Thrasher - $4.29 (5 pack)
Wave Crawdude - $5.49 (7 pack)
Mustad Plastic Frog Hook Double Wide - $6.49 (2 pack)
Lucas Fishing Reel Oil - $5.99 (1 oz.)
That's a total of $48.13 in value for a $25 subscription.
Really nice to see LTB and MTB being proactive and communicating with it's customers.
I got the standard mtb box this month and was really disappointed to open my box and the first thing I saw was a hula popper.... I can get the same thing in the 99 cent barging bin at walmart
