How Do You Catch A Bass That Follows Your Boat? 2024

fishing user avatarLucas Li reply :

Whenever I go out bass fishing to a certain spot there's always this monster 8 lber hanging around the boat. We call it Big Daddy. I used to try to throw baits at it but at most I'll get a casual glance and then the bass just ignores it.

We've given up trying to catch Big Daddy but it ticks me off every time I see him just chillin'. I'm not going to be able to catch it until the weather warms up, but any suggestions on how to catch this bass?

fishing user avatarTeal reply :

Video it.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

She is a smart bass, as smart as a bass can get via instinct.

All I can suggest is to change the bait's color and presentation/technique.

She may be condition to avoid hitting anything if she sees a boat or hears the trolling motor.

Keep trying. Sooner or later you will be successful.

fishing user avatarindianabasshunter reply :

Wonder if she follows the boat in order to eat whatever fish you throw back?

She may attack a smaller fish that you already have hooked but haven't brought into the boat yet.

fishing user avataraceman387 reply :

This is why i love fishing in my kayak. I fish some super clear strip mine pits and i have fish and turtles come up to me all the time trying to figure out what the heck i am.I used to see them flee from a long distance when i would turn on my trolling motor in my pond prowler.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

I suggest once you spot her back off as far as you can cast.

Shut off you trolling motor and livewell's and cast right to her a few times useing what the dominate bait is for you lake.

Try to position the boat down wind if there is any and let it take you closer.

If that don't work blow her a kiss, let her be, and try late in the evening.

Mike

I suck at computers and somehow posted above without finishing, but what i wanted to say was that i caught the my biggest bass of my life on my very first outing in my kayak out at some strip mine pits on a flat calm sunny afternoon which should be the toughest time in clear water like this. Try a kayak or canoe and cast from a long distance.

I have seen Big Daddy chase the smaller bass we throw back but haven't witnessed her actually eat one.

fishing user avatarBassWhole! reply :

Liveline a bluegill, or other such bait fish. Under certain circumstances, fish can become conditioned to a routine, to the exception of other forage. I've never seen a LMB follow a boat, but many fish associate boats, and their sounds (motor, dropping anchor, Donna Summers, etc) with free food.

Go Back At Night ~

You will not be able to see her, she will not be able to see you but you know she's in the area.

 Advantage - You.

A beefy, slowly fished top water or wake bait is a good choice or a black single blade spinner bait just slow rolled through the her living room.

Don't forget to post up her picture here - she would want that.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Big Daddy is more than likely Big Momma.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

If you fish Mission Viejo the big bass could 2X 8 lbs! Try a Matt's Hard Gil or similar swimbait the next 2 months and keep a lower profile, fish low light periods.
Tom

PS, if they are stocking trout use a trout swimbait the same size as the stockers. Bass over 4 lbs are almost always female.

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

Call the cops.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

If you know where it is, stay far away, make long casts, and use a big bait.

fishing user avatarBigMoneyGrip reply :

Put a trailer hook on your boat.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

This is my theory on "uncatchable" bass:

The reservoirs of the Tennessee River have produced more double digit bass in the last two

years than the total of 10+ EVER caught. Three friends, including the manager of our local

BPS, all caught a DD in one day two years ago! It's not magic, it's the Alabama Rig. Nothing

can resist a school of bait swimming in front of them,

One mystery still remains: Why is The Rig so much less effective in the summer?

Night time also covers up your mistakes ;)

I would have to throw plastics after what A-Jay mentioned!

fishing user avatarCDMeyer reply :

My best bet would be to go for a reaction bite.  How close to the boat does she follow?

fishing user avatarAvaitor63 reply :

Try a Rage Tail Craw and baby craw alot of action in these lures, Bama Craw or Green Pumpkin works well.Just work them about 3 to 4' in depth. Go get her.good luck.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Swimbaits, a large version of the predominate forage at the time you're fishing. Since she's hanging around docks I'd be leaning towards a bluegill imitator.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Couple of factors for Mission Veijo lake;

1. Private lake, 124 acres, boating hours are 1 hour after sunrise, 1 hour before sunset. Fishing for shore allowed sun up to 10P.

2. lake record is 19.7 lbs and get lots of pressure form trophy bass anglers during pre spawn (now) until spawn, about March.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

You see her ------> she see you

More than enough reason for her to develop shutmouthitis.

Is she catchable ? oh yeah !

How, well there are certain ways, you can try to catch her, one is you already know where she is so go at a time she can´t see you, like at night, don´t let her see you during daylight, you know she´s there then cast past the spot before reaching where she is.

Visible bass aren´t uncatchable, they are just harder to catch.

When that happens, go back to your post, and click on the edit button.  It will be very faint and to the left of the report, quote and multi-quote buttons.  The buttons will brighten as you pass the cursor over them.
