Banking Fishing Tips? 2024

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

So my trolling motor just broke so looks like I'm gonna be bank fishing for awhile till it gets fixed or replaced...

I'm gonna try bringing a medium heavy fast action rod with a 7.3 reel and a medium moderate action rod with a 6.4 reel does that sound about right? I also just organized all the tackle I'm gonna be using into a book bag for easy carrying.

Now I just need some tips because I don't do much bank fishing besides the pond near my house haha

fishing user avatarWVbassin87 reply :

What kinda tips? been bank beating all my life

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Anything! tips to make my experience more enjoyable or tips to flat out just help me land some fish.

fishing user avatarMr. BattleArmor reply :

First tip don't bring too much stuff. A big old back of tackle gets heavy after a while, and you wanna take your time

fishing user avatarOntarioFishingGuy reply :

Travel light so you can be mobile. Also, never EVER get into water covered in pond scum. You will become best friends with a lot of leeches, bugs, etc.

fishing user avatarABW reply :

Try not to bring TOO many plastics. Plastics can contribute to a ton of weight

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Its hard to leave all your tackle at home and bring just what you need... I wish I could take it ALL!

fishing user avatarFL Bass Abducter reply :

Stand on bank.

Cast into water.

If no bite, cast to your right.

If still no bite, walk down the bank.

Repeat process.

If still no bite, rob a liquor store or sell a kidney to generate enough cash flow to fix troll motor.

Always remember.....the BEST fishing spots will get you a trespassing ticket and a summons to appear if caught.

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

Trust me, I know what its like to want to bring everything out with you. I'm limited to bank fishing also.

Pack light. Only bring the most essential stuff. Your biggest confidence baits.

Also never underestimate the bank lines, and shallow water. Iv caught great bass on bank lines in less than 2 feet of water.

Be mobile and enjoy it. If one area doesn't get you bit, there could be fish 15 yards away.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

I don't pack light, esp when hitting new water. After I know a place I can lighten the load some. Then I generally change out my pack contents for each season.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

1.  Wear dark clothing. Nothing white.

2.  Remember, if you can see them they can see you.

3.  Walk about 50 feet form the bank when moving around.

4.  Be stealth. Bass has some fantastic senses and I have read that the bass can actually "feel" you walking close to the bank.

5.  Bring needle nose pliers with you for fast hook removal.

6.  Always watch your line and keep a finger on your line at all times.

7.  Learn the spots you are fishing.  Are there stumps, rocks, gravel, etc.. on the bottom?

8.  Fan cast. From left to right and then back from right to left at every place you stop go fish.

9.  If you can throw to any wood in the water try to throw to the end and then bring bait back to you along the wood.

10.  Throw at least 10 to 15 times at each target and from different angles.

11.  Don't fall in the water.

12.  Keep the place clean. No trash or line left behind.

13.  Look for critters as you walk. You will be surprised at the number of other critters that will be watching you and surprises along a bank are not fun.

14.  Flipping and Pitching on a spinning rig are your friends.  Master these two techniques.

15.  When you go to cast be cognizant of your surroundings.  It is embarrassing to snag a tree branch or high grass behind or to the side of you when you cast, causing the backlash of the century.

16. Don't dilly dally with the fish. Take a photo and release them as fast as possible.

17.  Bring an extra baitcaster and spinning reel ready to go jus tin case your first reel gets messed up. You can change reels fast.

18.  Check your line for nicks, cuts, scrapes, etc.  Cut out damaged line.

19.  Just like in your boat, retie your hook knot after two or three fish.

Now go out and start fishing!!!

fishing user avatarkfelton0002 reply :

Bass like to follow the shade when the day heats up. So cast above the shady area and pull your bait through the shade. Cast to the opposite bank if close enough like when fishing pond points and bring your bait into the water like prey coming into the water. Bass love to ambush prey and often wait at the bank for a frog or other food item to thump into the water. Also look into the water and match the hatch.. if you see lots of frogs throw something that resembles a frog, or salamanders, shad, whatever you see. Odds are if you're seeing a lot of prey potential, that's what they're feeding on. Bass are often gonna be hanging around cover that is difficult for you to get your bait so use things that make subtle sounds or vibrations to bring the bass to your bait.

fishing user avatarkfelton0002 reply :

If you're not catching much on full sized baits, don't hesitate to downsize. For example a full size brush hog might slay at a lake but in a pond the baby brush hogs size produce better. A larger fish will take a smaller bait, and the smaller fish will take a smaller bait allowing you to catch more fish. For ponds I do best with 3-5 inch stick baits, baby lizards, baby brush hogs, and 3 inch craws. Topwater or barely under surface early and bottom as the day goes on. Then you can go back to surface in late evening.

fishing user avatarMikell reply :

Remember there will always be some fish somewhere in the shallows, dont be afraid to fish only feet in front of where youre standing, I caught my PB (only 4lbs) but still my PB haha simply dropping a tube craw down a ledge only 3 feet in front of me where I had just seen the bass surface!

Also using a carolina rig or just a heavy texas rig to drag the bottom is good to find structure like depth changes grasses or other types of cover.

Ive had alot of luck around depth changes

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

I have been bank fishing for years, and here are some tips that have helped me alot.  Carry light. What I mean by that is carry a small bag with essentials for the waters you fish. For example on my waste pack I carry: 2 frogs, spinnerbaits,  and an assortment of soft plastics consisting of trick worms, centipedes, flukes, stickbaits, just to name a few. As far as hooks I will carry one, 6 pack of 3/0 and 2/0's EWG hooks and a couple of weighted swim bait hooks. I carry my lead in a small vitamin container and  spool of yozuri 12lb line for leaders. The Columbia waste pack I carry has pouches to hold water bottles so that is a must. Wear cargo shorts or pants so that you can carry your scale and/or misc things. A good pair of sneakers, dark clothes, polarized sun glasses and a hat and off you go. One of the important tips that I learned early on is to carry one outfit that accomodates the techniques you may be using. That can be tricky. But, yes its possible. I will not carry 2 outfits. I cover alot of ground and walking around with 2 outfits can be more of a liability to me. Other's carry more than 1 one rod and that's great if it works for them. Remember your cell phone for pics and communication. Carry your ID and fishing license with you but do not carry too much $$. If you bank fish long enough and by yourself like I do, you will come across some interesting characters. Hope this info helps. Have fun and good luck. ;)

The info I provided may seem like alot, but if you look at my avatar pic, I am carrying in that pic everything I just mentioned minus the hat.

fishing user avatareinscodek reply :

I find a pair of hip waders always useful.. even though some trips I never go in, you never know when going in thigh deep may be able to get off a better cast to reach a good target.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Thanks guys all the tips help alot!

Some of the most fun I've had fishing is wading out in the swampy area near my grandparents house and catching bowfin....

^^This. I bank fish 100% of the time, with one rod (spinning) 2 3700 plano boxes, small worm bag that fits 20-30 soft plastics, and a index card box with JJ's.  Put it in a regular backpack and its perfect.  Plus I ride my bike to my fishing spots so this is the perfect amount of tackle I need.  It gets the job done with what I have, but i'm sure if I have a little more spending money, Id buy a few more essentials that i'm missing out on.

when I doing something like wading I have to bring one rod usually spinning but I think I'll bring 2 rods for my bank fishing because I want to be able to use stuff like jigs but also be throwing crankbaits...

Definitely, Up here where I am, finesse is usually key for me.  Super clear water and the fish aren't hogs like down south. It just depends on your area and and what you are comfortable using.

I usually bring two rods when I am wading.. one thats in my casting hand and the other I tuck into my left wader while I cast on my right side..

Maybe the biggest issue I have with others. It really ticks me off to see all sorts of crap left around, especially in my favorite spots.

Which reminds me.....I need to find new spots.

I as well.. I usually carry a plastic bag and clean up alil in the areas I fish.. but its neverending.. every time I go i see new trash

Its a bit selfish imo

fishing user avatarRF813 reply :

Yes, I've picked up line, and boxes.  The worst is glass.

Q: Who the hell breaks bottles all over the place when they're fishing?

A: Apparently lots of people.

fishing user avatarOroBass reply :

Lol you think bank fishing is a challenge. I fish from a float tube. Same concept as you guys. The trick is already knowing what you need for your water. I know to take shakey heads and t rigs. So maybe a couple colors and sizes of worms and some terminal t and I'm set.

fishing user avatareverythingthatswims reply :

Since you will probably spot more fish from the bank than you would from a boat, make sure you cast past them and bring it back to them.

X2 fish all the way back to the bank and stop it right before you're lure comes back up out of the water. A lot of times they'll follow it all the way to the bank and they'll hit it right there, guess they think its going to get away and don't want to miss out on the opportunity.

This is very true.  I love a Zoom Horny Toad thrown straight down the bank, maybe 2' from the bank.  I always thrown to the same place multiple times when doing this and it has produced quite a few fish for me.  Works even better if there is any type of grass there too.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Bug spray.  Ticks are nasty.
