i feel bad 2024

today a friend and i were coming in after a long hot day of fishing and he was bragging about how he caught the biggest fish(3lb peacock). So i casted(that a word?) and hooked up to a 5 pounder. i started reelling it in and i notice that the fish wasnt trying to fight or anything and i see it twirling in a circle towards the boat. some how i hooked the fish through the head and out the eye, i have no idea how it happened. we noticed it's gill plates werent moving, fins werent moving, it like died instantly from the hook. we tried reviving it for like 5 min, no luck. so he kept it for a good meal. i just feel really bad that i killed a big fish :'(

Yep,that really sucks.Happens to us all.First time I tried senkos,well lets just say the mortality rate was high :-/

Its an unfortunate part of fishing. I caught a nice 4 pounder this may off of a spawning bed on one of my "secret" : bed fishing lures. I hooked her deep and caught a little bit of her gill. She swam right off so I thought she would be fine. I found her the next day floating right next to the bed, because of me. I felt sick.

Yep - we feel your pain. A couple weeks ago I hooked a nice heavy bass on a Carolina rig and it swallowed the hook. Made me sick and I put the Carolina rig down for the rest of the day, and haven't thrown it since.

Fishing is a blood sport, get over it.

We kill a few and eat fish or give them to somebody that will.

Killing a fish is nothing to worry over. A huge fish might be

something special but the one you caught means nothing. We

eat saltwater fish weekly, freshwater fish are no different.

DO NOT waste game, but don't fret over it either.

I do my best to release all my fish back happy and healthy, but remember, we put a bait on a hook and they eat it. Fish will die no matter how hard you try. Worse for me, I don't eat fresh water fish and don't know anyone that does.

im gunna pull into my bag of tricks here from when i spent a year as a psych major...... you feel bad becuse for ALL of us. the largemouth bass means something special to us. its different for each of us, but theres something about it that makes it hurt when we lose one.....

thats also the basic reason we fish for bass in the firstplace..... think about it. if it didnt mean something special.....wed all be out hunting for the biggest fish we can find! Largemouth is by no means the biggest fish available to any of us......... we catch them because theyre important for one reson or another. were sad when we kill one bc they mean alot to us........

feelin your pain. but it happens..... its one way the foodchains been warped a little by us evolving......

I wouldn't worry about it. There are many people on here that get mad over someone keeping a fish and eating it. But you know what a fish is a fish and if it dies eat it or give it to someone who will. Eating a fish every now and then won't kill the population but I don't suggest you keeping a fish all the time. Once you caught it it's not like you can turn back time and not hook it where you did. Things like this happen all the time. I do it myself and I know everyone else does. If they don't admit to it they are either scared of what some people say or are not fishing very much.

I don't mean to insult anyone but it how I feel.

We are all going to kill a bass now and then. Sometimes on purpose for a meal, sometimes accidentally like this one. No sweat. You will a post from time where someone will rant about a person keeping a large female. "They lay a gazillion eggs, it will hurt the fishery....If everybody did that..." and so on.

I say let the professional managers do their job. In Florida there are different regulations for every fish. If there is a serious problem, the F&W will manage it. So stay within the rules, and don't fret. Accidents will happen.

Yup, it happens. When it happens to me and I know it's happened meaning gill hooked and lots of blood and un responsive fish. It goes in my livewell and gets fillet'd and fry'd. It's an agreement I have with the fish. I fish for sport but I won't waste the resource. I don't fish for food (bass anyway) but if I kill one unintentionally, then I pony up and eat it. My thinking is God gave man dominion over the birds in the sky, the animals on the ground, and the fish in the sea so it's my place to respect that and not waste what's been given to me.

Makes me feel better anyway... RW is right, it's a blood sport and dying is part of it sometimes. Eatin' em is just fine, try it out sometime. Might make you feel better about it when it does happen because it will happen.

No biggie dude. It happens to the best of us. If anything the bass will not go to waste. Either eat it or throw it back for another animal to have as a meal!

Yup dont worry about it, its the circle of life(kinda) I feel the same way when it happens because i have such a high respect for the bass and find them to be very interesting fish. I can catch a trout gut it and cook it up feeling nothing but if it were a bass i would almost feel like i was gutting a family member :'(

There is a lot of pressure placed on us due to the fervency around C&R nowadays. In some cases, where pressure is high, it's warranted. But it's gone overboard I think.

That said, I'm careful in my fishing to minimize damage. I've gone barbless with plastics, and just this year started going barbless with crankbaits (!! -So far so good btw) because I hate seeing those mutilated jaws.

I commend you for giving a da@@. But let it go. You obviously do plenty towards the quality of the fishing in you waters.

Another good post. I have been reading articles here for a while but did not post. So many sites have such drama. I agree fish ultimately are there to be harvested. Selective harvest and stewardship allows for healthy good fish and animals. It's why we have limits and conservation departments.

I know how you feel, I recently got some 6" floating worms and put them on a shaky head and proceeded to immediately guthook two small bass. Not sure why I couldn't feel the strike, maybe I need a better rod. I successfully removed the hooks using the method written up elsewhere here but they were bleeding all over the place. Anyways they didn't make it and even though the bait was performing excellently I put it down and started using other bait. I'm not too sad about it but my goal is to catch and release. Plus some of the waters I fish, I wouldn't eat anything out of there.

In the end it is important that some fish are harvested, it insures a healthy population.

It's a fish , get over it . send it to me and it will be covered in Andy's Red Batter and cooked . Fish are like any wild animal , they all reproduce . Don't sweat one fish , like I don't sweat when I shoot a mallard hen . THERE are MORE to take that one's place

I gut hooked a bass May last year and it was bleeding, But not gallons, and the bleeding stopped when the fish was out of the water. When I held him in the water, he swam away as fast as a rocket with a lot of power. Did your fish swim off like a rocket to its bed?

I feel terriable when that happens to me, but you just have to tell yourself and know that you did not do it on purpose and did everthing in your power to save it.
