Classic warning 2024

fishing user avatarvolzfan59 reply :

I hesitated to make this post, but I messaged Glenn last night and he approved.

If your driving in for the Classic, or flying in and renting a car, BE CAREFUL DRIVING!

Due to our freezing weather, then warming into the 70's accompanied by our massive rainfall last week, the interstate, highways and some side roads have massive potholes. Seriously folks, I'm talking huge potholes!

TDOT, Knox County and the city are working hard to get them patched, but some are reopening. With our rainfall today and predicted freezing temperatures this week, it may get even worse.

In example, Tuesday before last, there were 22 cars pulled over on I-640. All 22 had blow outs, some with bent wheels. Just yesterday my wife and I passed a car on the side of i-40 in town. They were pulling a utility trailer. One of the wheels was gone. The axle was pulled from it's mount, and twisted under the trailer! I drive all over town for work, the potholes are everywhere.

I don't want any of you to break down.

Great post.

The weather is playing havoc with roads all over the south and east.

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

Thanks.....I knew it was horrible driving out to Douglas and Cherokee.  Speed is not your friend right now.

And if you are flying into Nashville then driving to Knoxville watch out for cops around Cookeville.

I would like to add when you get to Cookeville you might want to stop and get something to eat. I have made that drive once and if I remember right this is about the half way point between the two cities. I'm glad we stopped to eat because once you get past Cookeville there is nothing until you get to Knoxville.

Cookeville....Who come up with these names?

Yes Cookeville has plenty of facilities.  About two hours after every UT football game,  60 thousand people stop and pee in Cookeville.

Seriously, the road names down here in TN are baffling.

I was from Ohio and we had the Normal Elm, Oak and Main street names.

Down here we have Leadmine Bend, Little Tater Valley, Old Tazewell Pike and West State of Franklin.

Plus you can drive North or South on 25E or 25W.

Hearing for the first time that I had to go North on 25E was funny until I found out they were serious.

Now I don't live in Knoxville and have never heard of these roads but as a Tennessee native they make perfect sense to me.

Leadmine Bend - there's bend in the river called Leadmine bend and the road goes there.

Little Tater Valley - will take you to Little Tater Valley duh.

Old Tazewell Pike - road takes you to where old man Tazewell's farm used to be.

West State of Franklin - You would need to know your history on this one.  Before there was a State of Tennessee there was a State of Franklin.

As for 25E & 25W,  we do that in Nashville to.  Hwy 70 runs east to west across the US.  In Nashville we split it in two as it goes through town  and call the southern split 70S and just call the northern split 70.  Perfectly logical naming system to us natives.  If you name a road Elm street what does that mean?  Every street has an Elm tree.

One spring where I use to work all the truck drivers that came into the lot complained about a giant pothole that had opened up in the middle of the lot. My boss put up two traffic cones around the hole but the next day he called me into the office. He said he knew it was me because who else would put a "NO FISHING" sign on one of the cones. :unibrow:

How is the Athens area for a hotel room right off the interstate?

fishing user avatarvolzfan59 reply :

I don't live down there, but do travel through from time to time. There are several hotels down that way, but I don't recall which one's. You could stay in Lenoir City and be closer to Knoxville.

I'm not advocating the practice but it happens. The amount of caves in Tennessee Alabama and Georgia is crazy. Fall of 2017 was super dry and we even had probably one of the only wildfires in the area over the last 100 years. There were leaves galore plaguing homeowners and a huge sinkhole opened up on Alcoa highway. Citizens suggested we fill it up with all the city's leaves hahaha

fishing user avatarTennessee Boy reply :

Sinkholes have excellent taste in cars.  That's why I don't drive nice ones.

I live in Northern, Illinois and our roads are destroyed. The Public Works directors are saying it is likely the worst it has ever been because of this winter's weather.
