Suspending Jerkbaits 2025

I have a power plant lake near where I live and I would like to fish it during the winter. The lake is primarily deep with some shallow flats. I would like to fish jerkbaits off of the points and near the hot water discharge. What depth jerkbait should I use and what brand?

Hard to be the LC Pointer - 78, 100 series and if you're looking to go deeper than 6' try the 100DD which gets down to around 10' give or take. I also like the Spro McStick and the Spro McRip jerkbaits, both are quality baits with good hooks.

There's also the Rapala Husky Jerk and X-rap. The Husky Jerk is a pretty subtle jerkbait compared to the others mentioned so if the water is real cold I would try that one. The X-rap comes in a bunch of sizes and colors and is priced in the mid-range with the Husky Jerk being the least expensive. The Pointers will cost you around $15 a piece.

Not sure of your budget here but if you're starting from scratch and wanted to pick up a few those are what I would try first.

Stick to a few colors - Silver/Shad patterns and some Tenn Shad and ghost patterns. I would get the standard and the deep diving depending on where the fish are hanging out that day. Try them both and the old saying applies here, you can't fish a jerkbait too slow in the winter.

I have about 25 jerkbaits in my box and 23 of them are either pointer 78sp or Staysees. In my opinion, it is hard to find another jerkbait that can out produce the 78. When you want to get down to the 8-10ft range, the staysee gets it done.

As far as colors go, I have a lot of confidence in blugill and chartreause shad.

I also like the 78 pointer but I did really well with the Xcalibur Erratic shad this winter in the power plant lake that I fish. It outproduced my pointers and caught my PB of the year also.

I catch a lot of my fish at the powerplant lakes right on the bank but catch them out to about 15' of water. The biggest thing at one of them I fish is shad. The other one I fish has to have current.

I'd recommend you buy some academy deep jerk baits , and some shallow ones from them as well. As far as shallow ones it tough to beat LC 98 in American shad on clear power plant lakes. Throw the smaller jerks on light line and remember to give the lure some slack so it can move more erratic. Keep an eye on your finder and see where shad are holding and remember they move! I certainly buy some LC's and megabass lures once in a while but I find most of the time you dont need the high dollar lures. With that said I HATE rapala jerk baits they just don't do well for me.

my main jerk bait are Megabass Vision 110s god knows i own a lot of them lol... #2 is pointers 78sp and 100sp i have some 128's but never need them offten #3 is staysees when i need to get down a little more so in your cause i would grab me some staysees and a 78sp and a 100sp and go at it.

I try to make a trip to LaCygne, a powerplant lake in Kansas, every winter. My go-to bait the last two years has been a Husky Jerk #12 in glass perch for largemouth, whites and wipers. It's also hard to beat for fall and spring largemouth and pike here in Nebraska.

The way the water is looking down there now you may not be able to launch a boat on LaCygne this winter, it's about 10 feet low and only 1 boatramp is usuable right now.

That stinks! Hopefully they bring it back up or I'll have to find another mid-winter open water spot.

I caught bass on about everything there in the winter but most of the bonus wipers came on jerkbaits.

I have had some reluctance buying pointers because of the Northern Pike up here. I'm not interested in losing 15 dollar lure every time I go out.

AND I'm really against this high dollar bass bait movement.

With all that said, I've never seen a jerkbait produce on any level even close to a L/C Pointer. At least up here.

We've had a couple inches of rain this last week that should help it out a little bit. You could always fish Wolf Creek/Coffey County, more species of fish and a bigger lake but a little more of a hassle to fish. You can always check out the local fishing forums and under the central reports there is a running thread for KC area guys and there's reports for La Cygne pretty often.

Tie on a fluorocarbon leader. As heavy as you can go without killing the action/depth. I fish the Missouri quite a bit and this year on some days I catch as many pike as bass, like today! The pike have been on fire following the high water and I LOVE it. As long as you check the leader after every pike you should be ok. You'll still get the freak bite off once or twice a year but it's all part of the game. Now if you get nuts and throw some 30 pound fluoro on for a leader you probably won't get bit off at all but the action may suffer on all but the really large jerkbaits that you would normally use for pike. That's ok, bass like big jerkbaits too.

Tie in a 15lb flouro leader. I've only tied in line when tieing backing and main line together. Is a blood knot, or uni-knot strong enough to joint 15 or 17lb flouro to 10lb Y/Z Hybrid?

I think I could get away with that heavy a line because I use a small snap at the line tie for free range of motion for more action.

I caught this one Saturday in current with a 14 lb flouro leader tied to a braided mainline with a back to back uni. The glass rod and leader saved my rear in a strong current against 700 teeth. Kill the electric, keep the pressure on and pray to the good Lord those teeth/gill plates don't wreck the leader. Not the biggest pike I've ever caught but the biggest while fishing for smallmouth. It took the whole lure in it's mouth so all that was hanging out was the leader. It also had a 8 to 10 inch panfish in it's belly. I thought that was really cool to see. Some guys hate catching pike but I love it when the lady in the green dress shows up to the dance. If you play with the snaps and leader weight you can get your suspending jerkbait to hang just right. Sometimes I use a snap but if I'm throwing husky jerks I'll often tie straight to the split ring otherwise the lure tends to nosedive too hard on the pause. The split ring should allow good motion. I start my leaders at around 4 to 6 feet and trim down when they get nicked. Once they are about 18" I trim off the worn braid and tie on a new leader. The back to back uni will usually last that long but keep an eye on it. The Alberto knot is a good option if your leader material is around 20-30 pound or more. Both knots will zip through the guides just fine. Trial and error!

A lucky craft pointer should cover anything less then 10 feet. A lucky craft D-9 will get you down deeper on a lite line.

Although they are expensive they are the best! The smithwick rougues or x-raps by rapala are also excellent.

I must be using the wrong rougue, all mine are not really suspending jerkbaits.

agree completly .. if you dont mind the price nothing compares to a vision 110 . i also like excalibur jerkbaits as far as decent priced lures go excalibur would be my reccomendation

I'm pretty sure Smithwick makes some rogues that are floaters and sinkers, as well as the suspending

The Excalibur jerkbaits have become my favorite jerkbaits that I own. I haven't been able to make myself spend 16 dollars for a pointer yet, and to be honest I don't see any reason to do so since the mid ranged priced once have produced well for me. The erratic shad model is a great line of lures that produce well and are much more affordable then the Pointers. I also have never had any success with the Rapala X-Raps. I honestly regret spending my money on the ones I own.

The Luck e Strike STX have fished at least as well as my MB110's so far this winter. Give them a shot too, if you haven't tried them yet. Caught an 8+lber on one a couple of weeks ago.
