Every soft bait GY makes catches bass. I'm not sure if you're using Yamamoto or chompers or whatever but the hula grub is the real deal. I see them most commonly talked about being used on an open jighead.
I like them Texas rigged and "jika" rigged .
You should also try them weightless. No bigger than 3/0 hook for the 5" version. I've caught probably the most bass fishing these weightless they have great action just twitched along slowly.
Color doesn't matter. everything from chartreuse , to black , to bubblegum. I'm partial to the rootbeer green flake just cuz I like looking at it ???? . They all catch fish, awesome bait .

IMO GYCB twin tail Hula grub on a plain jig painted jig is an excellent lure for every common specie of fresh water bass; Largermouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted,

I love Hula Grubs . In a small stream the smallmouths devour them in the current and the largemouths in the slack water . I Texas rig them .

Not yet, I've got about a hundred Paca craws to burn through before I buy anything else. I also pour Yamamoto flappin hogs, which are awesome too. I'll grab a bag next time I place an order though. Thanks!

The GYB Hula Grub is an absolute staple for small mouth and is no slouch for large mouth. Smallies get an open hook and largies get a weed guard. You can fish them texas style but a jig head provides that enticing stand up position. And Glenn knows what 176 means for sure.

I used to love spider grubs....somehow they have gotten lost in the creature bait madness going on in my arsenal...But they work great no matter how you fish them..Good pitching bait, good trailer for jigs for extra bulk and flare, sometimes they are good weightless as they fall really slow. Its basically a twin tail grub with a plastic punch skirt.....
There is a guide on Stick Marsh who punches with spider grubs as his go to bait....They flat out work, all GYB baits seem to work well....BPS has a good one as well, and Yum used to have a good one....

Love the hula grub, when bite is tough and fat Ika is not producing I turn to Hula Grub. I like it on plain jig head 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8, and around weed I use 1/10oz Zman weedless.

I like this Idea of rigging one on a weadless Jighead. Not sure I have ever thrown one like this but have seen it before, now that swim jigs are so popular with a twin tail grub, I imagine this is a good way to give a different look in all the areas I fish where the bass get pounded with the same stuff....
I am glad this post was made. I left the spider grub out of my bag when I minimized my tackle cause it was getting out of control....Good thing Is I have a closet full of baits and lures that I can pull from as I never throw them away....I am going to let the spider grub creep back into my bag.....And someone mentioned the IKA...May have to let 2 bags of them creep in as well.
Tackle creep after cutting your bag down to only 3 boxes and as many plastics you can jam in it, in pockets etc....Is an issue.
Rootbeer green flake and some copper have always worked well. I seem to like all my baits in that color range....

That's how I've been doing it. I threw a hula jig a lot this last summer rigged weedless on a 1/4oz Title Shot jig. It was effective pretty much anywhere I threw it.

Light texas rig.
Looks a lot like a tube with more action.
Too expensive for every day use from me but some people actually take the skirt off used baits and slide them on hook above other creature baits.

Bought a pack of 4" and a pack of 5" Hula Grubs this year. Only used them one time on a shaky head. May have had a few little bites but didn't catch anything yet on them. Hope for better luck next time.

In the places where I buy tackle, go in and ask for "hula grubs" and you'll get a quizzical look before they realize and say, "yeah, we've got some Chompers." Conversely, you can go in to many of the same shops and ask, "How many different brands of Chompers do you got?" Then they'll mention that they have the original, maybe some Yums, Yamamoto, Berkley, and down in the Ozark there will probably be a couple of different hand pours that you've never seen before. When I saw the title to this thread I thought, "Hula grubs? . . .oh yeah, Chompers". To me Chompers is the generic term, kinda like Kleenex.

Actually Hula Grubs are spiders invented by Bobby Garland who created the Oringinal tube lure; Gitzit. Spider started as a skirt for jigs on the Colorado River lakes Mead, Mojave and Havasu in the early 70's.
Yamamoto was the 1st to offer spider skirts attached to double tail grubs and it's a sad day when Yamamoto stopped selling spider skirts as a seperate item last year.
