Snap Swivel 2025

Is it detrimental to have a snap hook on fishing line to make it quicker to change to different lures?

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

Not at all, just make sure it's a good quality one.  I've always used Norman Speed Clips but just started to try out the Decoy V-Snaps and so far I really like them.  Other quick snaps that you might want to look at are the Decoy Egg Snaps and the Gamakatsu G-Finesse Tournament Snaps.

fishing user avatarriverbasser reply :

Not at all but I've never found one I really liked. Its also still good practice to retie after catching a couple fish. Don't want to lose a giant over something stupid like that.

fishing user avatariiTzChunky reply :

I used them for a little while to swap out baits real fast, the snap swivel can mess up the action of the bait.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I only use snap swivels for in-line spinners because they twist the line. I can use snaps with some cranks. Now, being able to change baits quickly without having to cut and retie may look like a very attractive reason however you still have to cut and retie every now and then.

fishing user avatarCTBassin860 reply :

I only ever used them for crankbaits. The ones i have are cheap.Ive heard Norman speed clips are great more than once.

fishing user avatarColumbia Craw reply :

I never ever use a snap swivel, just a quick clip. There are several good brands out there.  I only apply them to crankbaits after the split ring has been removed.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have gone through phases.  I've used snaps for everything, then I tied on directly.  Now I use snaps when a bait has a split ring on it.

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

I retie with a snap just as often as without.  The reason and time does not change but i love the palomar and its super fast with little line waste using the owner snaps.

fishing user avatarGlenn reply :

^^  This ^^

I explain it here ...

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

Pline or decoy work great and are always on my CB rod

fishing user avatarNorthwestBasser reply :

I use snaps NOT snap swivels, for cranks and jerkbaits. Direct tie everything else. Just my method, it's fishing everyone can do things their own way. It's all about confidence, I don't think the snap scares fish I mean the two or three giant trebles don't seem to make them shy so...

Norman's are good clips. If you have fat fingers you'll be useing something else.

The trick I found with Norman's is to work them on

sideways, no squeezing necessary. Then basically

the same thing to work them off. (don't remember

where I found that tip, but wasn't orig. with me).

And welcome aboard, @hairyfish!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

The trick I found with Speed Clips was to toss them in the trash.  Could never get them to be fast.

I've tried a lot of lure connections over the years. Since I am not a "one-method" Pete, I swap out cranks or jerkbaits quite frequently. These old fingers and eyes just cannot do the re-tie every 10 minutes, so I rely on plain snaps. I would never use a snap swivel however - way too much hardware to interfere with lure actions. If you need a swivel, place it about 18" - 20" above the lure, on your leader.

I do not care much for the standard snaps, that have a reverse hook to close the snap. They tend to gather debris in the water too easily. Tried the Normans and they are OK.....again, old fingers are tough to get these to work very easily. A new style I'm testing out this season are the Spro Split Snaps. They don't have the reverse hook to close the snap and their profile is smooth as well. I'm a big fan of the Spro lineup of terminal tackle. Very durable and reliable. So, I have high hopes! :)

Those look like Speedclips done better, easier!

Even @J Francho should be able to use these.

I've never used snaps but that may be changing soon . Knots are becoming difficult to  tie . Yesterday I received  a new prescription for glasses . That should help .

Can someone please recommend a size snap for say a 1/2 ounce lipless cb?  I had a snap open up on me and I lost a Luckycraft lipless crankbait.  That hurt!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Never had a Duo-Loc open up on me.  I think they are #3.  Anyway, I'll be trying those Spro snaps out for sure.  There's no way for those to open up.

Ditto

Thanks

I'm in the wrong business.  I need to go into the snap making business.  $5 for 8 small wire snaps?  They probably cost a penny or two to make.

For the power clip you want the one rated for 50 lbs

For the decoy the 1.5 rated for 38 lbs

I use to be die hard Duo-Loc fan until I had one break on the bend, loosing a beaut of a smallie on an expensive jerkbait. I didn't care so much about the jerkbait, but felt bad for the bass. This is why I'm switching to other designs.

I got some Decoy finesse hooks that I was pretty impressed with so I ordered those through Ebay. Can't beat $3 for 13 and free shipping from Vietnam.
