Price Comparison: Super Chunk Vs. Sweet Beaver 2025

fishing user avatarHeron reply :

Based on TW prices.

Im finding that the Zoom Super Chunk is about the same price (per unit), as the Sweet Beaver.

Im not liking this.  (Of course only because I favor the super chunk.)

Well thank goodness for that.  That right there is ice cream abuse.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

If you like Sweet Beavers and Super Chunks, look into the Berkley Havoc Pit Boss, I used to use both the Sweet Beaver and Super Chunk, and have replaced them with the Pit Boss's.

Here is a  price per bait break down for you (based on TW prices)

R.I. Sweet Beaver 4:20....$4.79 per 10....or .47each

Zoom Super Chunk ....$2.39 per 6...... about  .47 each also

Berkley Havoc Pit Boss...$2.99 per 8.........about .37 each

Berkley Havoc Pit Chunk...$2.99 per 8 .....about .37 each

And believe me, I have no regrets switching. People might think .10 a bait is chump change, but when I go through 1000 baits a season, that extra $100 I saved while catching just as many, and as good of quality of fish helps. Fishing doesn't have to be needlessly expensive, it's expensive enough as it is.

Love your randomness!

fishing user avatarColdSVT reply :

Oooooorrrrr you could be silly like me and have Sweet beavers, Super Chunks, Pit boss, and Netbaits version of the beaver because the bait monkey executes without prejudice...i hate the monkey and love him at the same time lol

think about it...you have jig trailers, T rigs and more lol

and which question was that the answer to ?

fishing user avatarHeron reply :

Im just being a whiner because I dont feel the two should be the same price.   They are not comparable baits, they dont use comparable amounts of plastic, Im skeptical if they have comparable overhead cost to make them...yadda yadda yadda...

On the bright side...I think its great that the beaver is so comparatively inexpensive.

Now do a price comparison between Yamamoto (DT grubs) and Rage Tail (Craws) trailers.

You might be surprised.

Then your beavers must not be sweet.

Sorry I missed the joke.

Strike King Rage Tail Craw....$4.99 per 7 ...or 0.71 each

Yamamoto Double Tail Grub....$6.99 per 20..... or 0.35 each

Matt Allen turned me onto these for jig trailers. Give the DT grubs a try on the back of your jig, if you're serious about horizontal jigging.

ooops, my fault.  I was looking at the hula grubs.  Not the plain jane DT grubs.

But yeah, I agree, for 20 that price is decent

Obviously the DT grub is less 'special' than the rage craw.

I just buy stuff from Big Bite Baits.... It's really good stuff and a great value. I've donne head to head comparisons with your GYCB stuff... They look, feel, and have identical action. And I can buy the BBB stuff for very cheap. It helps when you go through a lot of plastic, and you don't make but a couple hundred bucks a month.

That's a bold statement saying they are the same

Yes it is my friend.. But I can confidently say that BBB Trick Sticks are extremely similar plastic to a GYCB Senko, and their Hula Grub shape is quite similar as well. It's more affordable, and I really like them. That's a "1 2 Punch" for me so to speak.

To each their own and leave it at that.

The Netbait B Bug is a great and reasonable priced beaver bait. Zman Palmetto bugs are another great one and they last WAY longer than any other, just don't mix them with other plastics.

The Zman Batwingz is a great trailer that also outlast all the others.

Wait, what?....serious about horizontal jigging? With DT grubs?  Are you saying that you have a preference for DT grubs, over other more elaborate trailers for this technique?

Is that based more so on overall effectiveness over other trailers?  Or rather on lower replacement costs after several hangups?

It's based on effectiveness; just what works for me. You have to find out yourself what catches you more fish, that's why I said to "give it a try".

Price is never a factor for me when targeting bigger fish is the concern.

I also like RI smallie beavers/ GYCB baby fat craws for trailers under certain situations.

There's a four part article on jig skirts, heads, trailers, etc on the last chance tackle blog page written by Matt Magnone. Might give you hints on some other things to try.

Well then, I shall have to go read that.

So why the smallie beaver, instead of the sweet beaver or the double wide?

fishing user avatardeep reply :

Because I don't think bigger/ more action is always better. The GYCB twin tails have all the action I need when fish want that.

Interesting....so when targeting larger fish, you actually set forth to downsize your presentation

What size jig do you use with that smallie beaver?

Negative.

I fish a few combinations and try to find what the fish might want on a given day.

I fish 3/8 arkie heads with a casting style hook (5/0 long shank light wire). Skirt material is either rubber or bucktail. Trailers are the 5" DT grub, 4" DT grub, the smallie beaver, or superpork frog/ tadpole.

The smallie beaver isn't a small bait. It's smaller than the other 2 varieties of course. But not small as far as jig trailers go.

Im feelin it.....its messing with my mind though. a little bit.  Because the whole Bigger Baits = Bigger fish idea has been ingrained in my head.

Any special reason that you prefer the Smallie Beaver over the Sweet Beaver?

fishing user avatardeep reply :

I just happen to like that size. I fish the 5" DT grub the most, followed by pork. The others are reserved as last resort(s).

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I will add my $.02 to the 'why a smallie' discussion. I am a big fan of RI Beavers in all sizes. I use them in many situations, from pitching in shallow heavy cover to deep water structure. While I do use them as jig trailers, I most often use them t-rigged. There are times when the smaller bait works better-for both size and numbers. Sometimes smaller is better!
