Honestly, In your experience, with any soft plastic...is there anything really that would suggest that one of these colors is any more productive than the other.
Do they excel under different circumstances? Such as?
Im getting tired of debating the choice with myself.
not for me. i just prefer the green pumpkin/black flake because i have confidence in that color in any water color conditions..... that's just me and my uneducated opinion though!
ZERO difference I use both in all situations. Whichever bag I pick up, I use.
I have more that a couple dozen other colors that are interchangeable too.
I mostly buy plastic worms by their flake count for weedless wacky rigging since they are softer than solid colors.
Open hook rigging, Tx rigging, Carolina rigging, or with a jig, it makes no difference what color.
If a certain color gives you confidence, then use it.
I have confidence in the presentation, color is not a factor.
I keep a list of Zoom colors I have used and most I still have some of each. Just bought some new flaky colors a couple of weeks ago that had a Limited Edition sticker on the package. Don't even know what the colors were, didn't make any difference, they had lots of metal flakes in them.
Baby Bass, Mardi Gras, Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Purple, Watermelon Red, Watermelon, Watermelon Candy, Red Shad, Cotton Candy, Pumpkin, June Bug, Limeaid, Bubble Gum, Smokin Blue, Green Pumpkin Green, Green Pumpkin Red, Bait Fish, Moccasin Blue, White, Seedless Watermelon, Seedless Pumpkin, Junebug Red, Red Bug, Yellow, Lemon, Lemon Shad, Red/ Black Core, Natural Blue, Cherry Seed, Icicle, Green Pumpkin Blue, Watermelon/ Chart. Tail, Cinnamon Purple, Watermelon Magic, Green Pumpkin Magic, Margarita, Green Pumpkin Gold, Watermelon Gold, Smokin Purple, Green Pumpkin Candy Red, Watermelon Slice, Gooseberry, Watermelon Red Magic, Sherbert, Black, Gourd Green, Chartreuse Pumpkin, Electric Blue
I tend to only want one or the other. So I'll get it stuck in my head, this ridiculous debate, of "which one do I want?"
Its really dumb, how long Ive stood there in the past, looking at the two, going back n forth, back n forth...."Do I want this one? or that one?"
Two of my favorites...They both work pretty much all the time and I'll use both interchangeably.
WR is a lighter/transparent color so I won't generally use it on darker days or in stained water, I'd usually go for GP in those cases.

Well that says it all to me right there. The water I fish mostly tends to be darker and stained.
So then...Green Pumpkin it is

So there is this hungry horse in a stable. He sees a pile of oats and a pile of hay.....
My go to colors don't even think about it much.

This is EXACTLY how I look at it. Brighter days or less stained water I will use Watermelon Red. On darker days or in stained water I go Green Pumpkin. However on a super clear lake I would rather throw the more natural Green pumpkin, instead of a watermelon red with a whole lot of flake.
If I am not getting bit on one, there is a good chance the next color I put on is the other.
I feel presenting the bait properly is way way way more important then color.
In clear water I want to use something that is the color of the bottom I am fishing. Usually that is GP.
For me it's a water clarity thing. The more clear water calls for melon
Watermelon red is my primary color on soft plastics. Green pumpkin is a close second but my confidence is in watermelon red... So I catch more fish with it.
Green pumpkin no flake - Water clarity between 2-4 ft, depth 8-12 feet
Green pumpkin blk flake - Water clarity 2-4; depth 12-25 ft
Green pumpkin magic flk - Fluke style baits; water clarity 2-4; most depths
Watermelon no flake - water clarity 10+; most depths
Watermelon blk flake - worm style baits; water clarity 5-10 ft; depth 4-12 ft
Watermelon red flake - worm styles; water clarity 5-10 ft; depth 12+ ft
Watermelon gold flake - fluke styles; water clarity 5+ ft; most depths
Watermelon magic - fluke styles; 3-5 ft; most depths
I like green pumpkin as an all around color, works every where in every water color. I like watermelon red stick baits and worms in really clear water. I am not "color matters" guy, but that don't mean I don't have favorites for one thing or another. It probably matters little to the fish.
Watermelon - Clear water and sunny days
Green Pumpkin - Clear/stained water cloudy days
Any derivative of either color can also work.
Watermelon red. My confidence bait, but when that doesn't work, Junebug.
I met a man that owned a trolling motor repair shop. He sold lures. One whole wall of lures. But, the only thing on that 12' long wall was Zoom trick worms watermelon red. He told me that that is the only lure he has ever used and he catches 10 pounders on that worm.
His son told me that the man got permission to fish on a private lake (natural but privately owned property all around it) that was not fished. With that worm he was catching 40 bass/day. I have no reason to not believe him.
Off the wall and probably irrelevant question' Green pumpkin looks like OD to me. Ever seen a plastic worm called OD?
Watermelon red doesn't work for me. Must have a curse.
Green pumpkin works but I swap watermelon red flake for candy grass

One hot color for 2014 was Watermelon Slice
I like Watermelon Red better because I think red helps. I dunno if it really does, but I guess it's a confidence thing. GP works, too.
I still have trouble with confidence if I throw Green Pumpkin in brown stained or almost muddy water. I feel like that color wouldn't stand out in those conditions even though others use it with success.
I have always used watermelon seed with great results so never thought to use with red flakes.

There is Watermelon Red Magic. It has black, red, gold, green, purple, and blue flakes that the fish can analyze and bite which color they like best.
I use Green Pumpkin a whole lot.
Works for me in a variety of situations and water color / clarities.
If the water is a little stained or has color, dipping the claws in chartreuse seems to help.

About two years ago that watermelon red was on fire around here, you couldn't keep them off a wacky rigged senko in that color especially during the spring I went to lake powell and went through about 5 bags in a weeks fishing trip (the smallies were just crushing them as soon as they hit the water). This last year I got tons of new gear and fell in love with fishing jigs/cranks so the worms/senkos didn't get much attention, but that color will always be big in my rotation. Most of the lakes around me are pretty clear though so that probably has a part in it, I have always done better with watermelon red over green pumpkin.
Two of my top colors by far.
Not a fan of watermelon red. Green pumpkin black flake or other variations of green pumpkin would be my preference.
Green pumpkin is my go to soft plastic color
Green pumpkin 90% of the time for me.
For me it is a matter of water clarity. The clearer the water the more translucent the skirt.

Very true , color of an unnatural baits is secondary to the action you are giving the bait ...
Watermelon colors-clear water/sunny conditions
Green pumpkin-clear to stained water/cloudy or low light conditions
and yes I've seen times where it made a HUGE difference which one I was using.
I have some of both and have caught fish with both. The bait I catch the most fish with is a kvd magnum dreamshot in Brown purple. But I always have both green pumpkin and watermelon red I many different types of worms.
if I am imitating a crawfish I like the Watermelon/red more as often they have some red/orange color on them. If I am imitating a baitfish/bluegill I like the GP and a lot of times with a little bit of blue or purple mixed in...
