Ned Rig Catches 2024

fishing user avataretrout72 reply :

Just wondering who else fishes this and what have you caught?

I've caught tons of lmb and smallies on the Ned rig, but I've also caught bluegill, sunfish, channel cat, bullhead, oscar, evan a carp. Pretty much everything in my local pond.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

I fished it a lot this last summer. I caught mostly largemouth, but also a few white bass and crappie depending on where I was throwing it

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Lots of bass, a carp or two, and a handful of brown trout including one that was 21". Also finally cracked the 20" Smallie barrier on my River system which I doubted would happen.

fishing user avatarBassin Bob reply :

I started fishing it this summer and caught a bunch of smallies, a few LM, and a ton of bream.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

It's kind of funny to see people so surprised at the Ned rig, since small plastic bodies on jigheads have been all-purpose fish-catching-machines for years, effective for many species, almost anywhere.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Just a few that I have pictures of, but there isn't much I haven't caught with one.

fishing user avatarTim Kelly reply :

I remember reading an article years ago about lure shape research they did at the Berkeley lab. The description of the bait they discovered the bass were most likely to hit was a non-descript stumpy cylindrical shape they made by taking the pincers off one of their craw baits. They decided that they would never sell any baits made to that shape though as it wouldn't sell to anglers who wanted to see some realism and action in their baits. Kind of sounds familiar doesn't it?

Who was it who didn't sign the Beatles? LOL

fishing user avatartander reply :

Since starting back fishing the first part of the year, I never heard of the Ned Rig. Only in the last two month have I heard of it and now it is all I want to throw. This rig will catch fish.

True, but from my experience, when fished side by side the TRD outperforms

In what situation would you use a ned rig over a drop shot?

fishing user avatarRyneB reply :

I'm gonna try it for the first time next season. What's the best way to work it?

The video shows 6 ways to fish it. I don't believe there is a wrong way, just hit the water.

Pretty much!
fishing user avatarbholtzinger14 reply :

I caught 2 little large mouth dinks on it today on my lunch break.

It seems like every time I catch one the ned rig is all the way in the back of their throat. I set the hook as soon as I feel something, but it does not seem to help.

Watch your line, instead of waiting to feel it. You'll have a lot more hook ups and most of the time it will be right in the upper lip.

on slack line, resist the temptation to feel the lure or the bite.

The wind has been blowing and it has been real tough to line watch. I got use to line watching when fishing weightless wacky worms, but the wind has made it real tough.

Every situation for me. I can't catch a DS fish to save my life but can catch Ned fish all day.

It's kind of like flyfishing for trout in current, only the wind is the current. You watch the bag in your line until it "catches", stops, or starts to sink more than it should. That means it's either on the bottom, or in a fish's mouth.

Don't mean to hijack a thread here but didn't feel my question warranted a new one. I would like to throw a ned rig on a baitcaster but from everything I read it is for spinning gear. So I thought why not beef up the hook to say, 3/16 oz (smallest I think I can get away with). That and the trailer (roughly 4.4 grams which is just over an 1/8 oz.) is roughly 5/16 oz, I should be able to throw it on a medium rod (with light tip) with my Curado 50e or Chronarch 50e. Looks good on paper, but is it possible? Does the heavier hook take a way from the action? It obviously affects fall rate which can be key depending on the fish that day. Just looking for others opinions.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

Mostly LMB, but a couple SMB, plenty of bluegills and the only crappie I ever caught from one lake.

Throw a shakyhead with a fattyZ. It's like a super-sized ned rig.

Very easily done, was out yesterday  throwing 1/10 ned rig with my Daiwa SV on 7' M/F Smoke rod 10# Sniper not an issue once brakes set properly. I have a 50E as well Im sure it can handle it. Ill go tie one on and check. 50E is on an Okuma Helios 7'MH/F.

fishing user avatarQUAKEnSHAKE reply :

Very windy out but like I thought 50E handled it effortlessly. I have 12# Sniper on the 50E and even with the stiff Helios casting 50-60 feet just flick the wrist with and into the wind.

Yesterday with my SV, on the water, was skipping the Ned rig 4,5,6 hops. Wasnt able to get a max distance due to an earlier issue with my line and another lure, lost almost the whole spool.

I second the Ned on a baitcaster.  I threw mine on a 7' ML Carrot Stix, on a Daiwa Fuego, with 8lb. P-Line CXX.  I couldn't quite rocket launch it, but I get it out there.

+3!

I have a blast fishing a Ned Rig on a light power MajorCraft Volkey and Daiwa PX-R.

Tight lines,

Bob
