Interested to see if anyone uses lure protectors on a regular basis. Why or Why not? When or When not? your thoughts would be appreciated!

The only reason I'd want them is to cover baits at weigh-in when I used something other people haven't thought of for those conditions but its just as easy to cut the baits off and put them under the deck!
I had one, thought it would be nice for the hard jerkbaits, but when I got to my fishing area, the treble hooks went right through the lure cover. :-/ I don't use it any more after the first time of removing the hooks from it so I could fish. :-[
The pouch types are nice for jig and pigs to keep the pork from drying out. Keeps ya from having to hang the jig over the side into the water. Other than that they tend to be a nuisance.
i use and work for lure tamer. unlike the canvas covers the hooks will not stick through. i like them when i have my kids on the boat so i dont have to worry about them stepping on them and getting a hook in the foot. i also carry extra and give them to co-anglers i draw to use while on my boat. keeps co-anglers from getting hooks in my seats and carpet. i also keep them on when i travel to keep the rods from getting tangled. in a tournament i start with them on and as the day goes by i leave them off the rods i am using but leave them on the rod stored away. doug
Docav, Thanks for the info, I am thinking about using them now.I haul my rods in my car rather than leaving them in my boat. trebles are hard on the seats, extra clothing, ect.... ;D Ivan
I use lure tamer and like them. They keep the hooks out of me and the carpet
That's just a little too obsessed with bass fishing for me.

I like the Lure tamer concept! I also have (small)kids in the boat regularly and am always worried about that. have used the pouches in this situation . They do a good job for that but like many of you have stated are cumbersome and a nuisence when installing or removing.

I'm with Al on this one!

I do use lure protectors, not to "protect" the lure, to avoid the lures from hooking into stuff they are not supposed to hook to....like my jacket or the straps of the tackle bag. :
i never used them, i leave my boat at boat storage at my work so i leave my rods in my boat so it would be nice to have them when i but my rods in the rod box so nothing get tangled up ad gets hooked together > lol
Its a good idea but
Whats the difference when you are done fishing and put your lure back in the tackle box?

Supermat rather than covering them up why not tie on something bizarre : Like a beer can popper ;D or a helicopter lure That would keep the snoops guessing ;D
To answer the poll I do not use them and agree with bass109 when finished put the lure back in the box.

My thoughts are that they would be good for transport. 1 have only fished in one tournament and pre-rigged five rods the night before. I used three of the pouch style that I had handy but wished I had something different afterwards.

E-MAIL comin'at YA!
After reading an advertisement on Lure Tamer,I might just change my mind.I carry many rigs when I fish (12-14) and could use something to keep baits from becoming entangled.I've tried every way known to man to cure that problem, and I just keep getting tangled baits.QuoteThat's just a little too obsessed with bass fishing for me.
Here are a few reasons to use a lure guard.
1) Eliminate tangles between rods while storing or transporting them.
2) Save yourself from the hassles of snagging everything but the fish.
3)PROTECT your valuable fishing equipment from damage. Reels and rods from scratches and knicks, keeps your line from becoming chaffed when a hook from another lure rides up the line. ($100-250 for rod and reel, $6-10 per spool of line for reel,$4-??? for the lures, what's a couple of dollars more to keep them all in awesome shape.)
4) Keep plastics from drying out. Also helps keep artifical attractants on your lure, not boat, rods, reels and hands. Works great for gulps, salted or oil base products.
5)Can rig all rods in comfort at home watching TV. When not in use no worries about kids or pets becoming your next catch.
6)Wade fishermen can put 2 or 3 lures in a large one and fish without carrying a tacklebox. Fits into pocket or hooks to beltloop. Alot safer then putting them in the hat. ;D
While there are many different types out the reason for using them are the same. Seeing how I am a maker of one of these fine devices I might sound a little biased. The offer Doug made for a free sample will last until Jan.1.. Happy Holidays all and have a great 2007!!!
I'll second the Lure Tamers. I got some samples earlier this year to try out and I also had one of my biggest tournament customers try some as well.
They are excellent products. Luretamers combined with Stickjackets have ended any and all rod tangling problems in my rod locker. I also no longer worry about getting hooked in the hand when getting rods out of the rod locker thanks to these lure covers, been there done the nasty cuts and tears - OUCH! I even use them on my jigs.
They take little time to use and they help quite a bit.
I'll be adding them to my inventory soon.

I guess I'm one of the oddballs here. Although I don't use many baits w/ trebles, there is usually a topwater tied on at all times. I put my rods in my car for the ride home and I got sick of tangled rods and lureds stuck in my car seats. I only need to wrap that 1 rod usually but it makes all the difference when seperating them later.

You? An oddball? Nooooooo...... ;D
Man, doesn't it suck when one rod tangles up everything? I remember having one crankbait tangle up 4 rods and get caught in the carpet at the same time.

I could use the money for a rapala, storm wee bug, or for something else other than buying a lure protector. lures don't need condoms......
Thanks to all who responded to this poll. Results seem to be just as I thought.
I have an IDEA for one in my head but can't seem to get it out in the works.
