I just lost 2 fish on the KVD 1.0. The second one hit the lure so hard, I almost lost my rod! Driving to bass pro right now, what hooks (brand and size) should I replace the stock hooks with? Thank you in advance?
Use whatever brand you want. When it comes to the hooks, just go a size up or down. I don't know if you lost them because the hooks were two big or small.
If I remember correctly I run the KVD Short Shank Triple Grips in a size 6 on 1.0's. I would have to look to verify but i'm pretty sure a 4 is too big.
How do you guys find that the stock hooks aren't good enough? I use the living hell out of red eye shad, and have yet to lose a fish using the hooks that they come with. Same goes for all of my SK lures, including the 4 KVD 1.5s I have. I keep hearing they are junk, but have yet to see it.
It isn't that they are "bad" hooks but are definitely not quality hooks. I've had so many fish bend one of the shanks on the hook rendering it useless after a fish or two. They are just brittle hooks.
I'm pretty sure I use size 4 mustad short shank triple grips so I can go up a size and they won't tangle.
I like the Gama Short shank RB Magic eye in #4 for 1.5 and #6 for 1.0..
I was able to change out the hooks on the 1.0. The 1.5 is a different story. The O rings do not give and I had to take a break. I'm sure my fingers will be throbbing tomorrow. I tried using a razor blade to get in between but still having trouble.

They are not junk. They are decent hooks but are lacking in some areas. They are much softer than I like for hooks to be. I've lost a few fish that had a hook flatten out. Some are better than others. I have some on a few red eyes that are great hooks and some on my 5XD's that look like they came from the bargon bin at Walmart.
If you haven't tried the KVD Elite hooks by Mustad they are worth a look. 10 times the hook as the stock ones.

I'd go KVD elite 2x 1x short hooks by Mustad. You may be able to put a #2 on and not have them tangle. If they do, #4's will be great

I always keep my left thumb nail just a bit long. Digs in between the split ring and I use a pair of needle nose to spin them around.
split ring pliers= no more bloody skin and broken, sore nails. On 6/11/2013 at 4:33 AM, Revival said:I was able to change out the hooks on the 1.0. The 1.5 is a different story. Get a pair of Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers, they are awesome! The other guys are correct, a size 4 short shank is what I have on my 1.0's too. I use a size 2 on 1.5's and size 1 on 2.5's. As long as the hooks don't get hooked on one another, you shouldn't have any problems.
WalMart sells some Mustad split ring pliers that are branded with the KVD logo for around $8. Well worth the investment. Using a razor blade? You sir, are crazy.
Split ring pliers are a must have if you change out trebles. I would never consider doing it without them now.
I also highly recommend the KVD Triple Grips. I'm not a big time cranker, but I think I can count the amount of fish I have lost on one hand since I started switching my stock hooks to Triple Grips. A mod or mod/fast action rod makes a big difference as well.
My hook recommendations for SK hard baits. All hooks are changed to Mustad KVD Elites, the 2x short, 1x strong triple grips.

I put #6 VMCs on my 1.0 without any problem. 4s are way too big for that little bait IMO.

Went to Walmart after work and they dont carry the split ring pliers. The employee said they been pulling a lot of fishing items from the shelves. I guess im going to bass pro again later today. I was trying to use the razor blade in an attempt to space the ring to get my nail in there. With the 1.0 i could use my fingers alone but with the 1.5, no way.
Also this was the back hook of my 1.0. For now i changed it to Gamakatsu EWG's. Our bass pro doesnt carry the Mustad KVD Elites.

I use the same hooks on my 1.0's
Those Gamakatsu EWG trebles are excellent hooks too. You would definitely have to use a size 6 with them because they don't have short shanks. I use them on a lot of baits too.

I ended up finding these hooks at Bass Pro and these hooks are no joke. I was able to land 3 fish today so i got to see them in action! I was going to return the gamakatsu hooks but I decided to keep them and try them out as i bought couple more 1.0's and 1.5's. I got myself a split ring pliers and it helps but its still a PIA. I think its still easier to use my fingers with the 1.0 but it comes in handy for the 1.5.

When I first started changing hooks frequently I bought a pair of BPS split ring pliers. They worked ok but were still cumbersome. It sucks that you already bought them. If you're going to change out hooks often, you should get a pair of Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers. They are under $20 and work better than any pliers I've ever used. The design is a little different and the jaws are really narrow so the fit inside the ring. TW carries them and Tackle Tour even reviewed them. They are worth their weight in gold!

x2. Definitely the way to go.
I guess I've been lucky. I have about 40 cranks 1.5 and 2.5 plus some series 5's and have yet to have a hook bend. I've even been hung up so bad I can pull the boat toward the snag and not a single problem. Probably just jinxed myself.

can we put this in a terminal tackle section of the "best of" thread........ ww2farmers hook chart is worth the price of admission.
plus I wont have to search for it anymore, lol

I disagree with a lot of those hook sizes. If I'm going to put short shank hooks on baits, I like to go up a size, otherwise, what's the point? There are plenty of better regular shank hooks that I would use over the short shank KVD's if I didn't want to go up a size.

Which do you reccomend?
Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers (standard)
Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers (large)
Texas Tackle Split Ring Pliers "Executive Model"

I use the standard, with the orange handle. I have a pair of the large ones, with the green handle also. I bought the large ones to change hooks on big swimbaits with giant split rings. They wouldn't work well on regular size baits. I think the Executive pliers are the same size as the regular but are stainless steel and a little fancier. I'm not 100% sure on that though. Get the standard pliers with the orange handle and you will be set.
Thanks!
