Is There Really A Need For All Those Soft Plastics? 2025

fishing user avatarnocellcontracts reply :

Guys, we've got jigs/trailers, finess worms, trick worms, stick worms, baby brush hogs, big brush hogs, culprit (standard) worms, 'Ol monster 10" and 12" worms, lizards, etc. It's all the same strike zone, bouncing off the bottom. And while we're talking about "the same strike zone", do we really need rods dedicated to t-rigs, another for c-rigs, another for jigs, etc?

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Yes

fishing user avatarKevin Beachy reply :

yes yes yes yes

fishing user avatargramps50 reply :

It helps keep people employed.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

Yup

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

i mean i know i always have one rod tied with a jig, another tied with a t rig worm and they stay like that ..... F-O-R-E-V-E-R

i've also rigged up one dedicated to a wacky worm set up so we'll see how that goes.  so yes, for sure, no doubt necessary.

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

There are a lot of things in life that we dont need, but we get a lot of joy from them. So my answer is yes, we do need them.lol.

fishing user avatarRSM789 reply :

For me, the answer became "Hell Yes!!" the first time I worked a piece of cover over pretty well with 1 kind of plastic worm without a bite & then hooked up on the first cast with something different.  Most often now it will alternate between T-rigged Roboworms & wacky Senkos.  The past few months, I have dozens of experiences where one of those 2 was ignored & the other got bit immediately at the same location.  All day long, it depends on that particular bass and what he/she is or isn't doing.

Until the fish start putting up billboards requesting certain baits, I'm going to have multiple ones tied on.

The next time you are fishing in the back of a boat & the front guy is fishing a plastic bait, make the same exact casts to the spots he fishes but with a different rig.  If he is throwing a drop shot, you choose a T-Rig.  Doesn't matter what, just do something different than him & watch how many fish you catch that ignored his offering.  If you were there doing the same thing as him, neither of you would have realized those fish were there.

It is also fun to follow behind a boat & pick up fish they missed.  They keep looking back at you, trying to figure out what you are doing that they aren't.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

"Need" no you don´t need everything you have, but it shure is fun to have all that stuff and part of the flavor of life catching with one and the other.

fishing user avatariabass8 reply :

How dare you speak ill of the bait monkey.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

No, you pick 1 and fish it forever if you enjoy fishing instead of catching bass.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Variety is the spice of life, they say...and

variety is the spice for catching bass, too.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I say no but I always like trying new things.  In the end, I go back to using Senkos, Fat Ikas, and Zoom Lizards and that's pretty much it.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

I have 2 storage units full of soft baits in cases stacked to the ceiling and I love em all equally, not equally, but I still love them all......

I am working on only bringing one large tackle bag full of plastics with me however, and when I first get an order man do I start hoarding for myself....I have enough soft baits to last 10 lifetimes of fishing every day, and the sad part it I still want to order some new colors and baits every day...I just like buying fishing tackle, some days plasticts, some days custom stuff, some days I just like to stock up on Bomber Long A's and Red Fins and not sure why, I think I counted 23 in my box, and 50 plus not opened and I will never sell a bomber long a from the 80's cause they catch more fish than the new ones and I stock up since that sound will be gone one day.......Made in USA lures were better in some cases....Pick up an old Zara Spook by Ebsco in the 80's-90's, then shake a new one and it will freak you out as the new ones just sound like noise, not a subtle but Hi Pitched low knocking sound which works better and that is real talk...Plastics keep getting better and so do alot of lures as well, I like Japanese lures but hate using them.

fishing user avatarBobP reply :

I keep around 10 different models of plastics in 2-3 different colors (mostly greens).  I'm sure 25 different models in 10 different colors would catch a few more fish if I knew exactly when and where to use all of them.  But carrying 250 bags of plastics instead of 25-30 bags would only end up being confusing and wasting fishing time for me.  I think you need some variety - just don't make it so large that you end up sitting in the boat changing baits all day instead of keeping your line wet.

No, a few plastics and a couple of rods will more than suffice IMO.

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

DEFFINETLY!... I'd say there isn't really a need for hard baits...... :)

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Sure there is, a fisherman is like a baseball pitcher one style of pitch won't win the whole game. It's up to us to figure out what will still catch fish if the bite slows down. When it slows down for me it's time to accept the challenge. I step up to the plate casting baits and changing types, sizes and colors. I'm a color freak anyway. I believe in Dr. LOREN HILL of OK. UNV. His ten years of tests on bass seeing certain colors at certain conditions. Throw in mother nature with the changes in sunlite and the affect on the plant life and hues in the water it becomes a challenge. For me it's the correct choice of bait and color.

It's a matter of what to throw at what time. Early mornings I'm topwater and shallow cranks. But I do mix up with some deeper cranks and c rigs brushogs/senkos in between.

Remember the action is up to us to figure out what that bass want at that moment.

I'm in competition against myself to do better. My ego is left at home still sleeping.

There is no fishing book of knowledge. There is no short cuts. The time we spend on the water is our best teacher.

I buy lures to test them just to see if they catch fish. On a tough day just throw the one you haven't used that much.

Soft plastics? In different colors? You bet?

I purchased once a off brand orange spook on clearance. One morning nothing was working. I put on the Orange spook and caught four good sized bass. Another day in the same spot I put on a baby bass colored culprit when worm and had success. Another day it was a reddish orange senko. Another trip the electric blue worm was the hot color.

Don't limit yourself to one color.

I have discontinued plastics like the Mann's Dragun fly. In the springtime as it becomes tee shirt weather I use this plastic dragun fly in a hatching presentation. At the right time it's a bass catcher for sure. From spring to mind summer. A smelled hook and a split shot it's a killer plastic.

You can become so productive using lures/plastics you can out fish livebait. Don't be color blind too.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Uh! My soft plastics box weighs 35 lbs so yes I do ;)

Now with that said of that 35 lbs more than 1/2 are several of the same lures& colors... I buy these in bulk!

This year my hottest lure was Bass Assassin's Tapout Worm in Black/Blue Tail, I bought 100, & of that I have maybe 35-40 left with 2 1/2 months to fish.

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Yes, I do.  I have a lot of stuff I don't need and I like it that way.  One day I'm going to have more time to burn through it, I hope.

fishing user avatarDogBone_384 reply :

Of course all the different soft baits are NEEDED. In addition to keeping folks employed and cash flowing through our economy, it gives BassResource members more to discuss, especially for we Northerners that don't get to fish during the winter months!

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

And yes all this stuff really works when presented correctly.
