Have gotten better about this but for years, this was how I kept the bait monkey happy. What say, you?
For me it's, have a good day with a lure, buy a lifetime supply, and never catch another fish on it again.
If I have a really good bait and lose it they are usually discontinued by the time I go looking for them.

Exactly. Irksome, isn't it? jj

This X2.
I had had a great top water popper that I got in a bargain bin and caught a ton of fish on it, lost it. Could not find another one for years... finally found it marketed under a different brand, now I own 4 and they catch, but not like that first one.
I cleaned out an EBay seller of one specific type of topwater that I found in the bargain bin at Walmart. I paid significantly more per each. I was having a great topwater season and lost my one and only to a pickerel and had to fish something else for a bit and wasn't getting the same results. Eventually I found it floating near where I lost it but I won't be caught without one again.
Buy it while you can find it. They will either discontinue it, or screw it up trying to make it "better".
For me, it's either use one, don't catch any fish on it and lose it and not replace it or lose one I caught a ton of fish on, replace it and never catch another fish on it again. So my theory is if I lose a lure that I fished for a while with no success, I need to replace that immediately because that's going to become a hot lure for me
Note: I have not tested this theory yet.
Yeah...Better to have doubles of ones that catch than a bunch that don’t. When a bait gets hit a couple times, I swear it gets better. In fact I don’t like using brand new ones out the pack (other than plastics)
Generally I have at least 5 for everyone that I lose.

This is what usually happens to me. I caught the Havoc Pitboss colors I like right when they were discontinued. I've gone through several packs, but I still have a couple to keep me going for a minute or two.
I lost a Vision 110 two weeks ago after one of the best days of fishing I’ve had in years... but buying back two more would be $50. Nah, can’t do it...

When did that happen?

Those colors were discontinued at least 2 years ago.

I didn't read "colors." For a second there I thought they discontinued the Pit Boss.
I have almost broken myself of the habit of buying absurd amounts of a single lure. The final straw was last fall when I managed to convince myself that the Rage Shellcracker was going to be discontinued and so of course I bought like three dozen packs.
80% of the time I use them for jig trailers. I don’t think I have ever had one rip and so I only lose one when I lose the jig they are riding on. The other 20% of the time they are rigged on a 6/0-1/4oz swimbait hook. Rigged this way I get dozens of fish per plastic, I think I have lost one since last fall. I literally think I will die before I use my stash up.
I have a similar problem, I typically always buy two of the exact same lure with the thought that if I am using it and its working then if I lose it I have a back up. I have a lot of doubles in my tackle.
One lure I wish I could find is the Storm Thin Fin. I received this lure in a package when I joined B.A.S.S. when I was a teenager. I wound up using it after several years of having it and was having a great day with it until I lost it. After that I couldn't find it and learned it had been discontinued.

Ah, yes. I swear by the green pumpkin green and purple. Luckily it's still available in the 4" for $2.86 at my local Wally world.
I saw the power bait pit boss is on clearance on TW. Kind of surprised since they've haven't been out for too long.

After I made the post I googled just to see if I was correct about them being discontinued. I just can never find them in stores around me which is strange. guess I will need to order at least two of each color now. hahaha

I bought one not too long ago hahaha. You can have it if I can find it!
TnRiver, I ain't that terribly worried about it. lol I appreciate the offer though. I would get it and throw it all day and not get a single bite anyway.
Yes! Buy two. I'm old enough now to have seen some great GoTo's disappear! Not made anymore. Can I replace them with something else? Probably... Ok... yes! But, that's only the material point.
A couple years ago I found a shower blows topwater bait floating in the shallows.
It became one of my favorite topwaters.
I ended up smacking it off the trolling motor head( I do this at least once a trip) and breaking it in 2.
So I had to buy another at about 20 bucks.
Fearful of losing that one, I found some "blanks" for around 2 bucks a piece.
No air brush for me so I painted them with some nail polish, threw some hardware on them and .... ... ...
Now I have enough nail polish to make a kardashian jealous, i have bought about 20 different blanks from poppers, deep divers, jerk baits and topwaters, I had to buy split rings and hooks .....
add those costs to the plastisol, color, glitter and molds I made/bought to "save" money by making my own soft plastics
Sometimes it's just better to pay the bait monkey instead of trying to find ways to get around him.
