I really hate Senko's.

Not because they don't catch fish. Lord knows they may just be the best bass catcher ever invented.

but I have so much confidence in them that I turn to them too quickly.

I love jig fishing and worming.

Take yesterday for example. I was using the jig, tube and worm, and getting very spotty results.

I switched to a Senko and "Blam" spots that had I just covered all of sudden were giving up 1-2 lbers.

sounds dumb right? but I really enjoy using different techniques and lures. This Gary Yamamoto guy is getting on my nerves - :-[

Avid, I'm right there with you............I love Senkos to death and they will always catch fish..........The only problem is they are not very durable........1 or 2 fish and your Senko is done........if you dont lose it on the hookset that is! I think Gary Yamamoto planned it that way! ;D

Well, why not alternate with the Fat Ika. I switched back and forth last week at Lake Fork and caught the majority of my bass on the Fat Ika, including my two best fish. I fish it just like the Senko, but sometimes the bass just prefer a different action and/ or an alternative profile. I think you would find the GYCB Kreature to be another bass magnet in the grass.

I fish some small ponds close to the house. I like to fish different lures and techniques on many of these short trips.

I don't take soft plastics with me if I'm fishing a shallow crankbait, spinnerbait, top water, etc. I fish 1 lure only...

I know what you mean, Avid. I like to make use of all the lures I've spent so much money on so it's hard when you end up going to the senko so quickly. It makes it hard to use other techniques and presentations.

Yeah I hate senkos too. The way the slowly fall and wiggle, then the fish inhales it. Yep I hate that . I'd rather just go casting.

Caught couple on a senko last night matter fact. Only thing that worked.

Yeah senkos are not my faverite lure, but the do catch fish. I have cought more on spinnerbaits though, and I dont really care what I'm fishing as long as I'm catching.

I also know what you mean. I'm very new to Bass fishing so I am trying to learn as many lures as I can. However, I tend to get frustrated with different lures and go back to the Senko too quickly because that is where my confidence lies. I just have to force myself to use the other lues (spinner bait, crank bait, buzz bait, etc) until I gain enough confidence in them too. That way I can go to the Senko when it's the right bait to use rather than just fishing it all the time. Because yea, you will catch bass on the Senko very often however there are other baits that work even better than Senkos at certain times.

Forced disipline like RW said is the way to go if you want to learn new techniques. When I was learning crankbaits for example, the only thing I would take was a handful of cranks and 1 rod & reel. Wouldnt take anything else to fall back on. It was either fish what I brought with me or get off the water. Like the majority here, I'd rather cast all day and not catch a thing that spend time doing yardwork... In the past if I wanted to try something new and it didnt work out relatively quick, I would tie on a t-rig worm/senko and catch fish. I felt like I wasnt really learning anything new cuz I would always go to my safety net.

I've done this almost every year, with a new lure/technique, for the past few years. I'm no expert by any means but I feel that it gives me at least some confidence to try different things when fishing is slow. I'm with ya when it comes to those Senko's though.

By the way RW, becasue of youre post's, Im going to run the Fat Ika through it's paces this year. I'll let ya know how it goes.

I have a buddy that tried them last year and thats all he will use now also. He usually uses my gear because he only fishes with me, so last week I grounded him from senko's and hid them when we went this weekend. He was ticked, but I asured him it was for the best ;D.

Hopefully now he will start buying his own and I can start using his stuff now.

One of the baits I seldomly tie is the senko, didn 't need them before they were invented.

In the fishing circles up here in NH. We give credit to the Senko but call it cheating or your using the "Idiot Bait". I fish mainly a jig and pig so resorting to a Senko is the end all be all of looking for a bait. Also when I am on the water I try not looking for numbers but for more quality fish than quantity.I might have thrown the Senko maybe a handful of times last year.

Every time I go fishing I bring my big tackle bag/box which is almost like mini BBS, and then once I get in the boat I end of fishing an ika/senko all day!!

An old timer once told me that I was crazy for having so many lures/baits he said that he can fill a coffee can with a few productive lures and have great success with out spending a fortune on every bait ever invented. I couldn't agree with him more however, what the heck else am I supposed to do to pass the time from the end of bow season until April 1st when the local reservoirs open??? :-/

I know exactly where your coming from!!! I find myself going down to the pond or out pre rigged with a crank or jig or something and then get a few bites nothing much...and then bam, out comes the pumpkinseed or watermelon senko and its all over for those fish!

Avid, you are dead on. I try to use cranks or jigs, but after an hour the senko is on the line. My limited time on the water is precious and I want to catch some before I have to wait for next weekend.

Raul,..it's a matter of greed, not need.

Eric and I have made a commitment to get some other tactics rolling this year. lots of things work well in our lake, shakey and drop-shot are going to be prevelant this yr. Going back to the old c-rig with some of these newer shape plastics too.

I hate the Senko so much I bought a jumbo BPS worm bag that holds about 60 bags of Senkos in various colors and sizes.

They do work pretty great, but I do just as good with 4inch powerworms, creatures, and buzzfrogs. I find them to work best on rocky/gravel bottoms, and creatures/powerworms better on mud/sandy bottoms, but thats just my opinion.

That's part of the problem though, the fish inhales it. I've lost count on the number of fish I have gut-hooked on senkos. I really hate killing fish. I would rather get skunked than catch 3 whoppers and accidentally kill 1 on a gut-hook.

You need to be a little quicker on your hook-set. Don't let the fish run with the bait. When you feel the tap-tap, lower the tip of your rod and reel down QUICKLY. Snap your wrists without raising the butt of your rod. This action is verty effective and should reduce the incidence of gut-hooking dramatically.

I am so NOT like that. I often get these incredible looks and comments when fishing with a partner because I often will change a lure after catching a bass on it. My thinking goes something like this "OK that bait works, let see what else I can catch em on"

Problem is that only lasts for so long. Then I get antsy to catch something and out comes a senko.

There are days when I won't catch many fish, and will just not put on a senko, but that's when I'm in a "go big or go home" mood.

then the numbers aren't so bad.

I could be justifiably be considered a "dummy" but I prefer to think of myself as a complex, multifaceted angler with a robust array of skills. 8-)

I have to say the Senko is my favorite of all baits but like Avid I tend to mix it up. Sometimes, based on what mood I am in, insticts kicks in and says "One fish, one bait." I usually have three rods set up for a specific bait so once I catch a fish on one rod/reel/bait set up, I put it down and pick up something else. Of course, this depends upon what conditions I am fishing in and sometimes when a particular bait gets hot, I won't stop until fish stop biting.
