Buzz Baits... Do They Work? 2024

Anyone use buzzbaits? I was curious if anyone has any luck with a buzbait for largemouth/smallmouth? I was just watching this guy on WFN killing laremouth on this white buzzbait, not sure what size or brand but he was catching hogs. I know most of these shows are trying to sell lures but they never mentioned the brand. Anyone have any good luck with a buzzbait please let us know!!! What colors you like? What sizes? Brands?

There's a time and a place to use them. What time and where, I don't know. I have never caught bass on them. Only muskies.

The only colors I use are white, chart, and black. Though my best buzz bait had a gold blade was purple, dark pink, and black, with a green and black chart head. Pops gave it to me and I can't find it any where. Bummer because it was the best buzz I ever had.
As for sizes, 1/4 and 3/8.

I average between 125-140 bass per year (25%) using mostly a black buzzbait which is the first thing I throw near the bank at sunrise/sunset. I work it parallel to the bank, along water willows/weeds, brush piles, and standing timber. I usually throw 3/8oz with 3/0 red trailer hook...over 1/2 my buzzbait bass get caught on the trailer hook.
I throw buzzbaits with 7'MH Carrot Stix, 7.1 Revo STX, 17# BPS Excel mono.
My favorite is black blade/black or red blade/black 3/8oz or 1/4oz Cavitron which can be found at BTD or TW.

It's funny, i got a strike king buzz, black, about a year ago. Threw it for the first time a week or 2 ago and its a pretty big buzz, and caught a baby bass that was almost the same size as the bait. Hilarious.
But if they work? I'm sure they do. I just feel like there is a time and place for them and you def need to know.
p.s. I hear GREAT things from the black Cavitrons

^^Here is my fishing report and this was first and second time using a buzzbait! I'm using a 7' MH-F Carbonlite, 6.4:1 Carbonlite reel spooled with 15# P-line CXX. Absolutely no problems hauling the one in my report. Please leave a comment if check it out!!
Went today for the wife she just picks up a double bladed T1 and Z-Man Chatterbait both white. Both in 3/8. We're trying to go tomorrow and I'm thinking about trying the Damiki Noisy M.T.B. buzzbait but might just stick with my producer right now.

They work great, but not all the time. I have great luck with them at night in the summer, but also in the hours before and after light. I like cavitrons, as well as some other smaller custom guys who make them around here in Georgia. I would suggest looking at Bassresource videos on buzzbaits, gives some great info.

Oh, and look into diffrent trailer hooks, I never throw a BB without one.

They work sometimes. Last week we caught around 30 on them. They were much better than anything else that day. Yesterday the fish would only follow them but jumped on a spinnerbait about 1' below the surface.

I devote at least 20 minutes to every fishing day to throwing a buzz bait - once the sun is shining on the water surface, I put it away. The one I primarily use is one that I picked up in a bargain bin at a local tackle store - have no idea who made it or where I can get another one - but it is great. It has two arms with double blades on each one - they counter rotate giving the lure lots of commotion on the surface. Black, btw - but I have also caught 'em on white - always use a trailer hook!!!

Yes, they work.
Try white, black and white chartruse depending on the water clarity.
Try them first thing at sunup, during the day, and in the evening at sundown.
Let bass hit them, wait for a count to 2 and then set the hook.
Use a trailer hook.

I love my Cavitrons. Thanks Bill for the comment on my outing!! I'm trying the White Chartreuse next. I still have to get out and get me a black one. I got a certain plastic I'm trying to see how it works as a trailer next time out.

Black on black or black red blade 3/8 or 1/2 cavitron is all you need 
I love buzzbaits and have won 3 tournaments this summer on nothing but a black cavitron, caught several big bass, and had a day that I caught a 22lb 5 bass limit on a black cavitron. You find the bass willing to eat them and you can clean house with it

I´ve been trying to catch fish with buzzbaits for lemme see ..... 30 years, I can count with my fingers how many fish I´ve caught with a buzzbait, ah, but I´m as stubborn as a mule, so I keep trying religiously, now it´s personal.
This is a good example of how a bait works well for some and doesn´t work at all for others.

I just went out and bought me a Bullseye double keel buzz 3/8 Black, Gold blades. Made by Dave's Tournament Tackle. I like his products just never tried his buzzbaits before.
My wife bought his single bladed with a clacker in Black/Red.
He somewhat a local guy from Greensboro, NC but a local shop here sells his gear so I'll see what he got to offer.

Thanks for all the replies!! Very good knowledge base here at Bass Resource, we are all very lucky to have the Bass Resource community to help us out to become better anglers! I pulled in my first buzz bait bass today! Believe it or not is was on a $1 buzz bait from Walmart, I put a bead on it and bored out the holes on the wing and presto a decent bait for $1. Wasn't a hog but it was a bass, the excitment of using something new never gets olds! Thanks again!

Key is that you must start reeling them in right at the very second it hits the water. If you let it sink, you need to bring your line in and start over. I am gonna put my buzzbait away though till I get a nice baitcaster. Casting with an open face will cause you to lose a lot of fish in my opinion.

I wouldn't say so depending on the gear, rod and reel your using. Believe me I know very little but when coming to buzzbaits I was told you need a pretty fast ratio reel and depending on which spinning reel you got, your ratio might be to slow. Like all my spinning gear is 5.2:1. The reel I'm using for my buzzbait is 6.4:1 or it could just be the wrong spot or wrong bait choice. Are you getting any hits?
What kind of rod or you using? I probably can't tell you if the rod is good for topwater let alone buzzbait but others might.

I use buzz baits on my Curado crankin' real, it's a 5.1 ratio and yeah I reel a little faster but it's not a problem. I have found it's easier with a bait caster though. The reason why I use my buzz bait with my low ratio reel is that I'm usually crawling it, fast enough to make the blades turn on the top. I used to fish them pretty fast until my buddy picked my buzz bait up and started crawling it, he nailed a 5lb in the same spot I had burned through. He went on to catch a lot more fish after that. So I now crawl it when the water is still, if it's raining or windy I'll pick up the speed.

Crawl like on the bottom? Just want to make sure I understand correctly? I never really tried that, I always pick up chatterbait and toss it out. One day might just have to give it a shot.

I think he means crawl like reel it as slowly as you can while keeping it on the surface. One of the biggest mistakes I see by people trying to fish a buzzbait is they're usually reeling like they're scared something might catch up to it. I reel mine very slowly and give the rod tip sharp twitches when it comes by likely spots. It seems to trigger a lot of strikes for me.

I'm using a Medium heavy Lews Speed stick Rod with a Lews Reel. Currently I have 8 pound bionic Walleye line on it. Here is a link to the reel I am using. Its the one on the top and the model is a TSS3000........

I don't know a whole lot but if ask me I would think your main problem could be your ratio more than anything, spinning or casting. Your reel ratio is 4.2.I would think just reeling the buzzbait like crazy to keep on top the water could be affecting your concentration or maybe affecting the bait. I could seriously be wrong but I would definitely try and get a faster reel. I'm just going by what I've been told. I wonder if maybe you could try maybe 1/4 size buzzbait with that reel? If that not the size your trying already.
BTW I like the looks of that reel, how do you like it?

That's a mistake I make allot myself. I would reel so fast sometimes where the buzzbait is running on the side. I just calm down and try to relax but your are exactly right.

Buzzbaits were my favorite baits for several years and I used black ones and white ones. Dusk, dawn, and overcast days are prime times. Even on the brightest days I would usually keep one on to fish shaded areas. Frogs fill the role that buzzbaits used to occupy for me now but I sure do miss them and plan on getting back into them next year.

Yeah when I said crawl it, I meant reel it slow. A 4.2.1 ratio isn't going to do very well with a buzz bait.

I love it. I actually don't have a problem with having it stay on top of the water, its just the initial timing when it hits the water that I am working on becoming better at.
If you are not paying attention with the open face, you can easily screw up on the timing. But if I focus I usually don't have a problem with it. Its just when you get distracted. For example if someone is talking while you are casting. I would think that a baitcaster would make fishing with buzzbaits easier? Am I correct?

Only thing I will say be easier is the fact you don't have to worry about the bail and the difference in handles while fishing especially on the bank if able too maybe cast on land first? But when coming distracted I easily do that even with my casting reels. Heck I even backlash not paying attention Than that's just a mess in itself. I think when your distracted your distracted no matter the gear or what your tossing out. Got to keep the eye on the prize!! lol
I even lose bites when just wacky rigging it cause I'm talking to my brother and not paying attention. I even lose or miss hits fishing by myself just cause I'm looking around the area especially when I'm out frogging. I'm to busy paying attention to my surroundings. I easily get distracted by wildlife.

My biggest top water fish this year was on a buzzbait that got hit while it was sinking because I was fixing a backlash.

I've got quite a few fish as one falls. Missed twice as many tho, the hook up ratios at the fall hasnt been too good for me.

The best buzz bait fish is when you cast it and as soon as it hits the water a big girl swallows it. It's as if she was sitting there with an open mouth saying come on big boy I'll give you a bit of excitement.

Yes they offer 3 out of 4 qualities that attract bass. Including vibration, sound, and can be seen. They excel in shallow dingy water above 60 degrees. They will also work in clear water but downsizing is crucial and a fast speed retrieve is required for the most part so they don't have a good look at the bait. Make sure to bump your buzzbait into things like logs, docks, and rocks to trigger a reaction strike.
