From C. Florida? I'm expecting to see a lunker caught on one of them with the quality bass you guys have in Florida  :D I wouldn't catch something on a swimbait around here

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I have some of the Mattlures gills and boy do they produce around cover in FL!

fishing user avatarmackkie reply :

I just got a slow sinker - i threw it a lot saturday morning...didnt catch anything, but no doubt i had 3 potential PB's following my hard bluegill for about 10ft before they lost interest.  I was rolling it nice and slow with some pauses in between...not sure why they didnt hit it.

That def. got my heart pounding...its good to know that it really attracts the big girl's interest...cant wait to catch one!

Got mine last week...gonna test it tomorrow.. ;)

On edit: the lake was Closed today.. >:D  Will give it a go tomorrow, Wed... :)

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I'll probably cave in and get one eventually, I already have a couple of the soft baby bass baits. I'm hoping that Matt might come out with a little smaller hard gill bait around the size and weight of a Strike King Shad which I can throw on regular equipment. That said, his lures are a work of art and the detail is absolutely stunning.

But Matt, that Castaic is the most realistic thing ever!!!   ::)

MrLiteTackle, you will be thoroughly pleased with your Hard Gill.  Try burning and killing it over the weed beds, and hold on.   :D

fishing user avatarFishDontLikeMe1301600221 reply :

i still like the castaic, atleast its worth a try @ that price imo. ::D :;) besides i dont think a fish cares to much about realistic or not in the end they are the ones chasing down plastic baits, spinners and everything else that doesnt look "realistic" ::) ::(

Wow, you are an amateur fisherman. Realism is crucial in lakes with a lot of pressure. And, before you tell me that you don't fish pressured lakes, I will tell you that you could never compete in a tournament then, because they are typically at pressured lakes. And before you tell me you don't care about tournaments, I will tell you that it is my goal, and many other anglers goals, to get to that level.

And unfortunately, you will never catch a trophy bass, because they tend to be a little picky. Maybe because they are old and have been caught on several occasions before, and don't go after anything unnatural anymore.

But, I am glad you are on this forum, because you have a lot to learn, and there is plenty of information on this site. ::( (I think this "smiley" is appropriate at this time.)

amateur..yea ,like everyone else, cause we arnt "pro" as for turning pro..good luck with that.and as for a trophy bass, have caught a few of those on plastic worms and one on a big spoon (i.e a dandy of an unrealistic bait)but yes here to learn and ask ?,thanks

You have a right to your own opinion, but here's something to think about.

Most people getting into swim baits tend to be scared off by the high dollar baits (there is a reason why they are expensive  :) )and lean towards the budget friendly baits (One reason why there are so many crappy baits on the market today).  People like you saying "It's worth a try @ that price" might try 10 "budget friendly baits" in your lifetime before you realize there is a reason their cheap.  Lets say half of those budget friendly baits fall apart, don't swim straight, or just aren't realistic  ::) enough to catch fish (yes, in my area realistic swim baits are a MUST).   Well with the money from those 5 budget friendly baits that didn't work, you could have bought yourself 2 quality high dollar baits that are "proven" swim baits.

With that said, I've been through the "Budget" swim baits.  Been there done that  >;) .  As well as NUMEROUS other people on this board.  Most of us try to help out "amateur" people like you and steer you clear of baits that have failed us and point you in the right direction to baits that will A.) Quicken the learning curve of swim baits and/or :D Put more fish in the boat.  If we have had good luck with bait A, we will highly recommend it over bait B.

Matt lures baits happen to be one of those baits that EVERYBODY throws and has good luck with.  I've thrown those crappy castaics... in fact I believe they might have been my first swim bait.  As stated above, the "Budget" price lured me in and I bit.  I quickly realized there was a reason they were so cheap  :-[

Anyway man... take this as you will, but remember, Matt has a giant group of followers for a reason.  When somebody asks me what baits they should start out with, his are on the top of that list.  His baits are legit and worth every penny.  Not only that, he takes care of his customers through thick and thin.  Good luck finding that with castaic.

Oh yea one more thing.  Swim baits are made to be as realistic as possible, in most cases that is there design, to replicate an actual fish... to compare the realisticness (yes I made up a word) of a swim bait to a big spoon is like comparing a apples and oranges.

x2, Matt has built a huge reputation you won't find with other swimbait companies. He has plenty of satisfied customers to show for it. This isn't my opinion either, it's a solid fact. Good luck with castaic :D

If you haven't even tried them then you really don't have any room to comment on which one is better.

You get what you pay for, most of the time.  I believe in the case with Matt's swimbaits you do get what you pay for.  I have not been able to get my hands on some of Matts swimbaits as of yet, but I have yet to hear/read a bad report from someone who does own his swimbaits.  And all I see is pictures of very nice fish with Matt's swimbait deep in the fishes mouth.  Matt, great lures and keep them coming.  Mrlitetackle, cant wait to see the fish you catch with them, Im sure you will be very happy with the results.

This is VERY true! They are worth more than what they are sold for IMO! It's crazy how they caught on in my area! A few people got some on Ebay and than everybody had to have them!

fishing user avatarBig-Dan reply :

got a quick question sorry to go off topic though, i have tons of sunfish here on my local river and was wondering if my smallmouths actually eat them or go after say the perch or other species. is a blue gill the same as a sunfish? if so then ill have to get me on of these bad boys.

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

Bluegill, Crappie, and freashwater bass are all sunfish. However there are certain sunfish like red ear or green sunfish that actualy have the word sunfish inj thier names. Smallmouth will absolutley eat any small fish they can fit in their mouths including bluegill and sunfish. However they would probably preferr smaller gills then a largemouth would eat.

I guess it just depends on the size of your smallies. If they are big then they shouldnt have a problem eating a mid sized swimbait. Now the little 2-3lbers might have a problem getting hooked. I havent fish for smallies so I dont have personal experiance with them

fishing user avatarBig-Dan reply :

cool thanks for the info Matt, well they are roughly 2-3lbs so yea unless you make some mini versions then i think the ones you got might be a little big >:D

just giving credit where credit is due, and your lures speak for themselves............

there may be a naysayer or two, but the vast majority knows whats up!!!

fishing user avatarJ-B reply :

I got my male bluegill Hardgill today.  I almost called in sick at work to go give it a try but unfortunately I have to work to make up for ordering the bait.   :D  The bait looks great.  I am planning on testing it in a 60yr old, not so well known rock quarry in my area.  I have seen some very, very big bass swimming around in the crystal clear water and I have been wanting to fish it.  I wanted something that looked very realistic to use in that clear water and this bait is it.  I will be happy to give a report about it once I have tried it out.  BTW, thanks for the great work and promt shipping Mattlures.

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

I have a floater version of the Hardgill and have caught a 1lber, a couple of 3lbers and one approaching 5lbs.  I don't throw it as much as a should, but I can attest to the fact that it does have an incredible life like action.  So, those of you who are wary of throwing it because its too big don't worry bass are more than aggressive enough to have a go at one!

I can't wait to try it on some SNOOK!

fishing user avatarJ-B reply :

Mattlures told me that one of his tricks for this lure is to cast it out and let it sit for up to 20 minutes and then start your retrieve.  The waves, or the current will make the fish swim a little to appear like it is a fish just sunning itself.  I guess this gets the big ones interested in the bait and when it starts to move away, they go after it.  He said that if it is jerked it will do a kind of walk the dog action.  If anyone should know how to use this lure, I feel that he does.  I plan on giving this method a try.

Matt... Quit giving away all the secrets  :D .

Yes this works great with most swimbaits.  While I don't have the patience to let a bait sit for 20 minutes, when I do use this technique I normally do anywhere from 3-5 minutes.  The big girls tend to be real picky on what they want to eat.  If you give them time to analyze the situation, it can sometimes stack the odds in your favor.  All of my hardgill fish have been from this technique.  I'll find shady pockets and throw on the sunny side of the line.  I'll let it sit and sometimes if you let it sit long enough you can see them come out and stare down the bait.

Anyway, with a bait this detailed, you have a real advantage when using this technique!!!

fishing user avatarMottfia reply :

In fisherman did a study on how big of baitfish a bass will eat and it is amazing what it said. And if I remember right, a bass can eat a baitfish up to 70% of its length. Matt's lure easily fall into that category for the fish that people are looking for with it plus a few bonus smaller fish.
