Yo-Zuri Hybrid Line Users ? 2024

fishing user avatarChrisD46 reply :

I bought a spool of Yo-Zuri  Hybrid #12lb. test to try for lipless crankbaits (on the advice of a few users) on a bait cast outfit .My first question is Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12lb. strong enough to use for spinner baits , chatter baits and swim jigs ?  My second question is whether Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12lb. can be used for top water applications ? With a composition of 50% Nylon and 50% FC I would want to know if Yo-Zuri Hybrid  is a sinking line or does it float ? Thanks in advance ...

It's ridiculously strong for its line rating, so no worries.

And I believe it's neutrally buoyant, fine for topwater.

If left on the surface, it'll float. Break surface tension

and it'll sloooowly drop.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

#12 has a breaking strength of 19.5 lbs and can be use as an "all-around" line for baitcasters.

The line floats as a result of surface tension, not like a bobber.  This has NO impact on any

presentation, topwater is fine.

I HIGHLY recommend treating the Hybrid with KVD Line & Lure Conditioner.

+1

As to OP q: "is....strong enough..?"

I have 12# YZ on my lipless/med cranking rod: didn't have to respool once last year...a heavy fishing year....that 12# line landed a 40# flathead, a foulhooked 18# carp, many 7-12# flatheads.....not to mention an awful lot of bass.  That line simply does not break.  :)

Now, as to using it for chatterbaits and spinnerbaits....I've gone to mostly braid for those....the YZ will stretch enough to make me blame the line for missed fish on moving single hooks :)  But, if you've got relatively fast rod, it does work pretty well for those, too.

fishing user avatarwdp reply :

I've been thinking about giving YZ hybrid another shot. I used it over a decade ago & didn't care for it at the time.

What type of knot do you guys use? Does the line work well with a palomar?

I tried it but I didn't like it.  Maybe because I didn't use line conditioner it seemed to have a lot of memory.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

With YZ, I use only SD Jam -- My wife uses only improved clinch....never had any problem with either

I use the Palomar with my Yo-Zuri and don't have issues with break offs.

fishing user avatarwdp reply :

So, does the YZ hybrid still have a lot of memory issues or has it improved some over the last 10 yrs? That was my biggest complaint when I tried it. Plus, I kept have issues with line breakage at knots, but seems like I used a normal cinch knot, like I would with mono.

But this really was about a decade ago. I picked up the 12 lb YZ hybrid at Wally World in a green, large spool for pretty cheap. Think I still got some & I just use it for backing now. They may have improved/changed the formulation since then. Looks like all TW carries is the clear color.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

@wdp,

The issued you mentioned are, indeed, still tradeoffs.

While worth it to me...I fully understand why they wouldn't be for others.

I use KVD L&L every day.  From my perspective, it completely eliminates the memory issues.  The line will become brittle when kinked hard.  Slobbered, careful terminal knots have never been a problem for me.  However, I can get issues on certain leader knots, or on backlashes that get kinked.

Appreciate the info. At one time I used KVD line conditioner liberally for a lot of my fluoro set ups. In recent years, it seems fluoro has gotten better & more manageable. Still got half a bottle of it I can use. May give YZ another shot at some point.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Nah...

Most guys like Yo-Zuri, but some don't. The line has not changed. If you did not like it then,

you won't like it now.

I am a fan and as others have stated, the breaking strength is higher than it's rating.  I have been using it in 6lb for my spinning rod setup used mainly for shaky heads and i have 15lb on moving bait and texas rig rods.  I have zero complaints.  I also will say use the line conditioner. I am not sure what it would be like without it because i have always used it but line management has never been an issue.

fishing user avataroffsidewing reply :

Yo-Zuri is good stuff.  Make sure you go by line diameter with them.  Their magic 6lb test is the same line diameter as many 10lb monos.

fishing user avatarGreenGhostMan reply :

I just started using yo zuri hybrid in 12# and really like it.  Plan on buying some 15# from TW soon.  I tried using fluorocarbon on my texas rig rod, but am going to swap it out for the 15# yo zuri.

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Used 8 pound for first time on my tdz/steez combo recently.

Casting 3/8oz jigs to heavy heavy wood cover and brought in a 5 pounder no problem from the thick stuff.  The 8lb is rated to like 13 pounds.

No KVDLL and it casts like a dream.

fishing user avatarRbm18 reply :

I use it for pretty much everything except frogs (I use braid) . I actually just picked up 4 spools of it on sale at wal mart for $5 a spool.

I am a big YZ fan, but I don't use any over 12# any more.   The issues with memory and line management are no longer mitigated by line conditioner with 15#.  I should think you would do fine with your 12#.   I use that, or more likely, braid, for trigs and jigs.

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

I use 12 for most all purpose stuff.  I must not fill my spool enough cause I think it's just fine when casting.  Never used line conditioner with it

Line has a better memory than me! I have 12# on my jig rod.Good stuff. X2 on the line conditioner

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Great breaking strength. I used 10# for cranking for awhile, I like it, but I figured I'd just try something new. May pick it up again for my spinning reel.

Thanks for the tip.  Didn't know that about the 15#.

I use a double wrapped palomar aka the nanofil knot.Ive never had that knot fail.

fishing user avatarChrisD46 reply :

Thanks for the replies - quite a jump in line diameter when going from #12lb. to #15lb. so I believe #12lb. is the best all around size for a bait caster set up .

Yes, but the strength is seriously underrated.  The 12lb test easily has the breaking strength of any quality 17lb test line. It's almost ridiculous.  You really don't much heavier than 12lb test hybrid for 90% of bass fishing applications.  P-Line's copolymer has a very similar reputation.

All this said, I find it's best suited as a leader and not a main line due to memory.  Some folks have had good luck with ample line conditioner.  I solved it by spooling with braid.

fishing user avatarMNGeorge reply :

Never tried it as a main line...use braid for almost everything. That said, to address your question about strength, I use it as leader material in 12 lb. test and have had no issues whatsoever with it. The Mississippi River is tough on leaders and the Hybrid holds up at least as well as if not better than the fluorocarbon I used to use and at a fraction of the cost. I use a Palomar knot to secure terminal tackle and a back to back Uni-knot to connect with the braid and have had no issues with knot breakage.

fishing user avatarTBAG reply :

I've been using the 6lb on my spinning setups for ned rigs and weightless senkos. I'm contemplating trying it on my crankbait setups. Would you guys suggest 10 or 12 lb?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

#10

fishing user avatarVolFan reply :

10 or even 8.  I use 12 and 15 for my swimbait setups with weights from 1 to 6 oz.

fishing user avatarDangerfield reply :

I just picked up a 600 yard spool on Amazon for $15. I was going to test it as a mainline to get a good handle on the line memory. If it's bad, I'm going back to braid as a mainline and I'll use this as leader material.

If it is YZH, it won't be bad unless it is 15 or greater....or you neglect to use KVD L&L
