My first experience of buying a reel through EBAY. What a disaster!
For a few months have been looking for a quality used Chronarch 51MG on Ebay. Some guy on this forum advised there was one listed on EBay. Checked the listing, emailed the seller with a question. The item was sold, but the seller emailed me afterwards directly and advised he had another one in same condition if I was interested. Well I was, and accecpted his price of $180 shipped. (Also tried to sell me two for $350 if interested?. I was not!)
Well, I received the reel today, and it is not the same as he described. Its an older 51 MG, silver colour, not green. And what's more, it is totally non-functional! Spool does not revolve at all, either to cast or to retreive -locked solid, wont turn at all. Also there's no tension at all on the drag. But the handles seem very sticky when trying to rotate them.
No idea what's wrong with this reel, but I dread to think what it may cost me to have it put into working order? Any ideas, your reel techies?
I sent a quick email to the seller advising the problems and proposing that I get an estimate from the local Shimano repair depot for fixing the problems, and maybe credit my PayPal account for the repair costs?. No reponse yet.
Any ideas on what I might do here. I'd like to keep the reel if possible to avoid re-shipping problems. But at what cost, who knows?
Any advice very welcome.
Round up all correspondence from the seller and inform him/her that the item you received is not in the condition the seller claimed and you will be filing a fraud complaint thru Paypal if the situation is not resolved to your satisfaction.
Got a nasty and aggressive response from the seller, telling me the reel was in perfect condition when he sent it, etc,. etc. , and that I am an idiot who "doesn't have a clue" and does not know how to use a baitcaster reel ( actually more than 30 years experience, in fact). Also that I am a 'scam artist' who's trying to rip HIM off, etc. And that I should sent the reel back (at my expense) and it "better be the same reel that I sent you" etc . etc.
Jesus, did I really deserve all this? Is this what buying on EBay is all a about. Insults and aggravation from professional scammers?
Never again. . .
The problem is he said the seller e-mailed him so there is no record of correspondense on E-bay between the seller and him.E-bay cautions about such e-mails ,I have gotten them before and I delete them. The working condition of this reel does not sound like a cheap fix , but it would be hard to tell until it is dismantled and inspected. Also since when is a Chronarch mg green ? I would still try to resolve it through E-bay or paypal.

never had a problem with ebay. ever. how did you pay for the reel?
WOW. I feel your pain. I read of this happening too many times. Then when I mention it, I get all these responses from guys who have been using Paypal for years with no problems. Well...I know my luck. It is exactly like yours. Don't know about you, but I couldn't afford to write off that much money. Definitely see what Paypal can do for you. Don't know if ebay would be of help or not. Seriously doubt it.
Don't hesitate. If he gets hold of Paypal first, you will be the bad guy. > > Heard of that before, too. The good guy winds up getting his Paypal account frozen.
Do you know where he lives? I'd be willing to take a short trip with a long bat.
Guys like this need a lesson they won't forget for awhile.

paypal is a waste of time. go to the holder of the credit card listed on the paypal account.
If you paid by paypal file a claim with them. Have photos of everything as well. If you used a credit card through Paypal, then you should also contact them about what to do.
Never, ever accept second chance offers unless the seller has a TON of positive feedback or it is a well known store. Even then you can never be too careful. I have sold lots of stuff by second chance, but I also sent the buyers e-mails during the auction letting them know I had other stuff to put up, so don't worry about being outbid. (I had a price in mind on my stuff and the price had already gone past that point and I was very happy)
Definitely file a complaint through PayPal. And post the guy's name so WE ALL don't get burned by him. That's the best way to strike back. Spread it around what type of person he is and he won't be able to do stuff like this.
And I don't believe for one second that he thinks he sent a "good" reel and you messed it up, but that seems to be the story he's pushing, so even on the very far out chance that he actually thinks he did right, show him that that sort of response to your email (accusing you of scamming, being and idiot, and all else he said).......show him that is the WRONG way to do business and THIS is what it costs when he does (by this I mean all the trouble you're about to cause him). That's what I'd do, I'd post his name to the whole world, and if you have the emails post them too. I think there is a proper place here in this forum to do this as well. I've seen posts like that in the past.
Whatever you do, after an email like that DO NOT send him the reel back. If you do, you'll be out the money AND the reel. The last part he said about it "better be the same reel he sent you" is the same as saying when he gets it, "it won't be the same one he sent". Mark my words, that's what will be said.
Lastly, I've had many good transactions through Ebay, and only two of them went through PayPal. Sadly it was one of those two PayPal experiences that I got burned on once. I was the seller and he was the buyer. I sent GOOD merchandise and he claimed it was damaged so he filed a claim and PayPal took the money he paid me and gave it back to him. For this, I will not use PayPal again. But based on my experience I'd say that you do have a chance to get your money back since you would be the person filing the claim.
I haven't sworn off Ebay because of that, but I have slowed way down with anything I do on there since then.
I'm going to assume you did the transaction outside of ebay. I personally have had all good experiences with ebay. However you have to do the deal through ebay and when buying something always check the sellers feedback rating. If they have anything less than 100% feedback rating click on their user name and you can read each of their transactions feedback individually. A couple of years ago my buddy bid on a 4-wheeler engine and was outbid. He later recieved a personal e-mail not through ebay that stated that the original buyer did'nt pay and they were giving my buddy a "second chance" offer. Even worse they wanted him to wire the $1,800 western union. I told him it sounded pretty fishy to me. He's stubborn and really wanted the motor so he sent the money. Never got a motor and never heard from the guy again. If you did do it through ebay you have a few options. Contact paypal like other members have stated or send him the reel back. Insist he credits your account first. Good luck, sincerely. Ebay is good if you practice a little caution.

A good site to check Ebay feedback is www.toolhaus.org
You can punch in a person's Ebay user name and use that site to pull up all of their neutral and negative feedback. It's especially helpful when dealing with a "Power Seller" who has 20,000+ feedbacks.
There are also a bunch of other cool features as well. Definitely a site to bookmark.
First off, I am an avid ebayer and have been for over 10 years.
I didn't completely read your post, but these are the things you need to know:
It seems like you did not buy a posted listing on ebay, just one he said he had. So I assumed you paid paypal only. If this is the case you do not have buyer protection through ebay/paypal. You need keep all emails and forward it to paypal for a dispute. But I am pretty sure this is after like 21 days. When this time comes around, you need to show pictures. The fact that he said he had a 51mg and you agreed, you are not going to win there. But if he said it was in good condition and working order, then you can win. But it is tough since you agreed to buy it. If you did not specify if it was a newer chronarch and such, you are pretty much out of luck. He delivered the product he said he had. If you didn't get into specifics there after.
Please do not blame ebay or paypal. It is the people selling who should be blamed. Ebay and Paypal will help you as much as they can, but they are merely a middle man.
I bought a curado e7 on ebay like 4 weeks ago, and i received it had sand and no oil. I took it apart and cleaned it and re-lubed it, and it was as new. So I still got a great deal. Sometimes people are not totally honest.
Oh, I know this sounds weird, but I never buy anything from New York or Florida, because I know a lot of stolen products go through these states.
I agree with what others have said, but I do have one question. You stated that you were looking for a green Chronarch 51mg and got a silver one? I have never seen a green 51mg before. I hope things work out for ya.
Never use Paypal!!
Only buy on ebay where you can pay by credit card!
They will cheat you out of your $ do a google search they have an entire website dedicated to people who have been cheated by them.
They are owned by a the same company that owns ebay. But of course they will never advertise it because it is such a blatant confict of interest.
I have absolutely no problems with Ebay or paypal these days.I've been using it for over 8 years.Granted i don't use it much, but i still got over 60+ transaction. All went good except one.
Sounds like you got yourself a "scam" artist.Contact Ebay, let them know what's going on and get that dude's account froze.Ebay has really been cracking down on bad sellers.
QuoteWell, I received the reel today, and it is not the same as he described. Its an older 51 MG, silver colour, not green. .
Just to clarify, Chronarch Mgs have never been green, they are silver, actually there 's only one Chronarch 50/51 Mg, and it 's silver; older Mg Chronarchs were CH100 Mg, still, they were silver body with golden handle and spool.
ditto to Raul's post... were you confusing it with the new curado?
That's what I was thinking, they're silver, but regardless of the color, it still works like crap.
I hate hearing stories like this. I keep my fingers crossed each time I order something, but I rarely buy anything used for this exact reason.
this might be out of line but...........there are at least 2 very good reel techs on this forum you could send that booger too and have it serviced. i just cant see a quality reel like that needing anything more unless the spool shaft is bent or something.

x2. Maybe that is why he told you that you "don't have a clue." Can you post a pic of the reel you got and the reel you wanted?
O.K. guys, here's the final story:
Before taking any further action with this matter, I thought I'd get an opinion on this reel from my local reel service technician - who also happens to be the official Shimano repair guy for Eastern Canada.
Within minutes he had the reel apart and removed pieces of old mono line twisted around the spool somehow, causing the sppol to lock up solid and also preventing the drag from operating correctly! He said he thought the old line had been in there for a while? Not sure why the seller didn't notice that?
Anyway, bottom line; I re-spooled the reel with my favourite braid (Daiwa Samurai) and made several hundred casts ( forehand, backhand, overhead, pitching, etc. ) across my backyard pool without a single backlash or overrun - pretty good for me! This reel is really nice to use, and so light. . .
I have emailed the seller apologizing for my initial over-reaction, but still feel his aggressive response and negative comments about my limited intelligence ( true as that may yet be?) was a bit out of order and somewhat innappropriate. (Especially since he knew I was a first-time EBay buyer.)
Anyway, bottom line is: I did get the reel I've been looking for , for several months. And despite the aggravations, I'm really looking forward to using it once the bass season opens.
As for future purchases on EBay, well I'll have to think a bit harder about that. . .
Meanwhile, thanks for all the advice, support, etc. etc. You guys are a great bunch to be around. I'm lucky to be part of this forum. . .
I'm glad you got it working well. You should have had the repair guy take a picture of the inside of the reel. So...what made you think Chronarchs were green?
In every pic I've seen of Cronarchs in EBay ads, the reel body looks like it's metallic green. Must be the reflections or the photo lighting? I never saw a real live Cronarch to compare? So somehow I assumed the latest model Cronarchs were green.
Not that the colour means a %^&*, the reel casts and retrieves beautifully. I have no 'fashion tastes' in reels, just function. . .
I'm glad everything turned out OK...you have yourself a fine reel there hope you enjoy it.
T
I sure you will really enjoy the reel. It's also great that you have someone local that you can trust with your reels.
What do you think, with the reel not operating correctly and the seller's negative attitude, is this worthy of a negative feedback? I'd say it's borderline, but probably yes, even though the issue was solved in minutes with a simple inspection.
Well, yes I guess you do have a point here. But I was somewhat aggressive myself when I wrote to him after receiving the reel. So maybe I'm partly to blame, too.
Anyway, I think I'll just leave it as it is for now. The reel is casting beautifully and I really love the way it handles.
Now I wondering if I should also get a CORE 51?
(At 76 next birthday I think I'm allowed to indulge myself a little. . .)

Yes, indulge. You only live once.
You're right. I am definitely NOT James Bond. . .

Only one CORE?? ;D
Come on, LAO.
Do you think we're all as rich as you?
This wasn't an eBay buy, it was an 'email the guy and buy outside of eBay' buy.
