Need spinning rod suggestions... 2025

Hey guys, I'm looking to finally spend some money and get a really nice fishing rod. The budget's probably gonna be around $150-160 and I want to pair it up with a Pflueger Supreme 8035 so I'm looking for something nice and light.

I'd like to use it for weightless senkos and some other worms, maybe some smaller crankbaits and Rat-L-Traps, super flukes, and some T-rigging (sometimes bigger worms so I'd like it to have some backbone).

I think I want to try out a St. Croix rod so I've been looking at the Avid AVS66MF or the AVS66MHF, as a 6'6" rod will fit perfectly in my car. Also been looking at the Shimano Crucial CRS66M and CRS66MH, and some others...

What do you guys think??? I want a good compromise of light weight and decent backbone if possible... Any other suggestions welcome as well! Thanks!

AVS68MXF

This is a better choice for jigs, plastics, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits.

It will do for treble hook lures. I have the casting version of the

AVS66MF which is better for treble hooks, but rods for "moving

baits" are not as important as they are for other applications.

I have a CRS66M and it's a great rod for lighter lures. It'll handle t-rigged worms, small cranks, and weightless Senkos just fine, but I think there are probably better choices if you want to toss anything heavier than that. It's only rated for 1/8-3/8 oz lures, so I wouldn't go much heavier than that.

That sounds pretty good... I do have a cheap Shimano Sonora (the orange one, eww) and a BPS Tourney Special that I could use for my crankbaits for now at least. I will need something to throw buzzbaits with so that'll be good, and I'm gonna probably try jig fishing again this year so I think you sold me RW.

Still open to other suggestions though. Thanks guys!

You think the MH would be better for it? Is the M a pretty light rod? I can't find weight specs on them anywhere.

The CRS66M is very light and extremely sensitive. I've got mine paired with a Symetre 2500FI and think it's a great general-purpose rod. I've never fished the MH, so I really can't compare the two. When the time came for me to buy a MH spinning rod, I went with a BPS JM Sig. Series instead.

I tell you; I have a St. Croix triumph attached to my Shimano Symetre and have found it fine as a spinning rod... so if you are looking for a low budget option the triumph is a nice spinning rod but I wouldn't suggest it for a baitcasting reel, because I never got enough feel in the baitcasting setup like I do with the Triumph spinning rod.

I have a Shimano crucial 6'8" drop shot rod and I love it, it feels really nice. Also have a casting series of the Avid, its great too, so either of those brands would work just fine.

I'm really looking at the Avid more, just because it's probably lighter and I want to try out a higher end setup for a while, since I've never really got that much of a chance to. How much of a difference is there between say the Triumph and the Mojos??

I think you owe it to yourself to look at the Kistler line up before making a final decision! I have a couple Magnesium MgAPM66S. These are great rods for the money!!!

I have 15 Kistlers at this point and seem to buy another 3 or 4 every season....Awesome rods!!!

I've actually looked a lot at Kistler rods. I've heard nothing but good things about them. I don't know what it is though, I guess it's probably because I can go to Gander or BPS and hold and feel the St. Croixs or Shimanos, and there's a good amount of them on eBay and whatnot so I can find a good deal. No one around here (WPB, FL) carries Kistler, at least that I can find. They will definitely be on my mind for my next rod purchase, though.

I've owned several of the "high end" (Loomis IMX, GLX, GL3, St. Croix Avid, Legend Elite, BPS Johnny Morris Elite, Shimano, Quantum, etc...) rods over the years. I've spent/waisted alot of money on "not so good" rods throughout my fishing life as well.

As of last season I have traded/sold off everything and narrowed my arsenal to Kistler. I have some of pretty much all the models in the Kistler line-up with the exception of the new Carbon Steel series. I just really think that for the money ($160-$190) the Magnesium Series in the Kistler line is awfully hard to beat.

There are so many good sticks on the market today and its gotten so competitive that its really hard to make a "bad" decision! I'm a believer in keeping things as similar as possible when it comes to feel so I picked Kistler and have been very happy!!!

I really like the color orange, but I don't know if I could actually fish with an orange fishing rod... I have looked into the warranty for them and it is pretty d**n nice though...

Never buy a rod online, unless you live a 100 miiles from nowhere.

Take your reel and put on several rods and see what you like. Examine that rod for defects, bent or misaligned guides or anything else that doesn't look right, most likely it will be fine.

Last of all, just buy one already and be done with it, learn by your own trial error

both crucial and the avid, are really good rods. my 7' m crucial is slightly lighter than my 7' avid. but if i had to pick one it would def. be the avid.

you could get a pretty nice setup at dicks for 100. triumph + diawa capricorn(dicks version of the exceler) got a couple the other day. great rod and reel for the money, considering the reel costs 90 dollars alone.

I'm not sure what brand to recommend, but if you are fishing plastics and cranks you need two different rods. For a cranking rod I would recommend the browning silaflex rod that's available at BPS. A 6'6" medium action is about right. For plastics, you need a stick with a stiff tip and some backbone. I would suggest a 7', medium or medium/heavy BPS bionic blade spinning rod.

St Croix Avid AVS68MXF for pretty much everything except crankbaits. It's to fast for that and you will have to many missed bites and "unbuttoned" fish. St Croix rods are a bit more powerfull than other brands at the same rating.

Forget Mojo... I would say go Avid or Triumph and if you can swing the cash you won't be sorry with an Avid. I owned a Mojo and wasn't happy with it for my baitcaster and switched to Avid. i use triumph for my spinning setup... I like the feel I get out of the triumph and I have landed some monster bass with a 6' lite action... I would probably recommend a longer and stiffer rod, but the 6' lite is killer fun.

If it were my choice, I'd go with the MH power in either the Avid or the Crucial, especially if you want decent backbone. I'm not sure either one of these is better than the other for any reason. I have both Avids and Crucials and sensitivity etc is about the same to me. I guess I'd go Crucial because they are a little cheaper.

I've bought redbones at Sports Authority in Boynton and they didn't mind, I bought a Shimano at the Boynton fisherman on federal and they didn't care and I bought a Star at BPS in Dania and they assisted me as well in selecting a good rod for the reel I brought in to the store.

My personal policy super-cedes any store policy, I have what they want, MY MONEY, makes me the boss not them.

I made my own cardinal mistake of buying a closeout on line. $75 rod Daiwa for 19.95 and I'm not crazy for it.
