Line snapping (Braid Help) 2025

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

I've been fishing some very thick reed / hydrilla / lilly mixture...   I've been using 30lb spider braid, and I keep breaking off, should I be going heavier? 60-75lb? My revo sx is my main casting reel, would that be able to handle 60-75lb braid?

fishing user avatarTrippyJai reply :

Of course it will, people use 50-65lb power pro braid to flip. I have 50 lb power pro for my worm rod and it works perfect.

Try it.

fishing user avatarScroGG ToGG reply :

Hmmm.. as an avid braid user, that doesn't sound normal..

(Not trying to insult your intelligence but..) Are you 100% sure that your line is actually breaking, or is it coming off at the lure?

What kind of knot are you tying for braid?

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

I'm positive its not the knot, I'm usually use an improved clinch or a double palomer. Not sure what the issue is but it is deffinately snapping. Maybe I just got a bad spool?

fishing user avatarScroGG ToGG reply :

yeah, thats what i was thinking too..

still got your receipt??

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

Yeah I do, maybe I will just take it back and try another spool of 30# before upping the test.  I just started using braid so wasn't sure if I needed to go heavier or if this was something off.

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

are you sure a rock didn't cut it?spiderwire stinks.fireline's new 8 strand braid is the best imho followed by sufix.powerpro is an outdated 4 strand braid.all the rest are pretenders.YOU SHOULD ALSO BE USING AT LEAST 65 LB TEST.the thicker line will withstand more abrasion and will not dig into your spool.it is only 15 lb diameter.

fishing user avatardonbeatya reply :

Wow cant believe no one mentioned checking your guides, run a q-tip thru them. Even braid can be severely weakned by fraid's and nicks. Also there is only one braid that needs to be used and its called POWER PRO its truly awesome.

fishing user avatardonbeatya reply :

Digging into your spool. Wow hate to know what your doing cause you should be back spooling whenever you use braid. heres why:

1. it will cut cost

2. your only flipping and pitching with it (usually) so i like to use about 75 yards

3. for a multi day tourney after flipping and pitching for hours its alot easier to change for the next day

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

Flippin' and pitchin' is the exact reason why it digs into itself. You must have your drag set tight(if you want to get the fish out) when using these techniques! And most people don't fish tournaments so there is no need to switch every two days. Why in the world would you want to with braid anyways!?! Also, FireLine and Suffix are FAR superior to Power Pro!

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

Stop using braid.  You don't need it.   Braid is garbage.

Any line that requires backing, requires a leader, and can't take abrasion sucks.

fishing user avatarsweet daddy reply :

Fireline, and suffix are the cheap mans power pro. I have used all of them, and the berkley products suck, the suffix is as stiff as spider wire, and most of you have been spoiled on braid by the weaker products. Try power pro, or magi braid then tell me I don't need braid.

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

I had the same issues with braid on hooksets.  Braid has almost nearly zero stretch, so the shock resistance suffers on strong or solid hooksets.  I switched brands thinking it might help, same issues no matter what brand I tied on.  I have to say Sufix was the preferred brand to snap the least.  I have since switched to Fluorocarbon and never looked back.  More fish, more abrasion resistance, and no line snapping on hooksets.  ;)

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

unless you are tieing terrible knots or getting cut on rocks 50 and 65 lb fireline or sufix braid will explode your rod before it snaps.

Snapped that on hooksets too. It wasn't the knots I was tying or due to fishing in rock. Braid just doesn't deal real well with sudden or hard hooksets.

Having zero stretch means something has to give. It's usually the rod if the drag is cranked all the way down. I think it mainly boils down to poor abrasion resistance, braid is not so good in that category.

Yea'.... huh....

Must be why I never catch any big ones.

Geeez, I sure wish somemebody would have told me this earlier ;)

Peace,

Fish

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Check your guides. May have one that is bad and damaging the line. Braid is not bullet proof. It needs to be maintained and changed. If you are breaking off at the knot retie several times a day and strip off a few feet when you do. If it continues replace the line with Powerpro. Your reel will handle 65# braid with no problem.

Huh? No backing here. No leader here either. Braid is not a cure all.

What a ridiculous statement.

X2 From the company that brought you Vanish  :;)... Fireline, Fireline Chrystal, Fireline Braid, it doesn't matter its all trash. I don't care if the new Fireline Braid has 8-strands, 20-strands, or 36-strands, Power Pro is still the best out there, maybe behind Daiwa Samurai braid which I have yet to try.

fishing user avatarWillzx225 reply :

Braid is just another tool.  It is great in some applications (ie. heavy grass) and not so good in other applications (ie. rock) as apparent by this conversation.  I agree though that 30lb might be a little small for bottom baits but would be a good choice for moving baits.  My vote would be for Suffix or Power Pro in 65lb. Although my buddy who fishes heavy grass year round in LA has switched to Diawa Samuri braid from Power Pro and says it is the best braid he has used.

Hmmmmmmm, FireLine Braid is stronger, limper, smaller diameter, rounder so less wear on guides, quieter, less color fade....................yeah, your right, GEEEEZ, what was i thinking!!!!!!

;) ;)

Wisconsin....grass...pike,pickeral, and muskie????  :-/ :-X

I like the sound power pro makes when it flies through the guides, and that unmistakable sound it makes on the hook set. I have used all the fireline's, and I don't care if they are limp, hold color, or are a smaller diameter they still cant hold a candle to power pro.

I agree with Jimzee. I learned the hard way when I was in two BFL's. I lost 4 fish total by the line snapping. . I switched two Gamma and only use braid for frogs now.

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

Braid is horrendous in the rocks, but it excels in water hyacinth and lily pads.

It saws through them like butter.

Four or five foot leader of fluoro, tied with an Albright Special to the braid works great on my spinning rods.

I can reel the leader onto the rod, and cast without a tick as the knot passes through the guides.  It will tick when reeled in because of the nature of the knot.  On the way out, the braid leads.  The tag end offers zero or nearly no resistance.

I like the braid for its thin diameter, and its lack of memory.  Casts much better than the equivalent pound test of mono or fluoro.

On baitcasters, it's probably not as noticable.

The great thing about fishing is that we can all do it our way.  Whatever floats your boat is the way to go.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Power pro may or may not be the best but in my opinion it is not outdated.  It works fine with a minimum of issues and it's very strong.  I catch fish that are much bigger and stronger than any bass on 10 or 15#. When I'm bass fishing 10# PP handles lily pads, weeds and stumps with no  problem, at least not for me.

The debate of one line against another or braid vs mono is getting old, it boils down to personal preference, not scientific fact.
