Favorite Braid For Frogging & Flipping ? 2025

I just got a new Dobyns Sierra 735 mated to a new Daiwa Fuego CT 8:1 reel that I plan to use for frogging and flipping (VMC Tokyo Rig) . What brand braid , pound test and color do you recommend for the above set up / applications ? I'm thinking either #50 lb. or #65 lb. , either in 4 strand or 8 strand and most likely green in color . I am lead to believe that 4 strand braid (although noisier coming through rod guides) is preferred for slicing through weeds better and is tougher than 8 strand braid - but I could be wrong ... Your thoughts ?

That's what they say but I never had a problem with 8 strand braids. There are plenty of good ones out there.Tuff line domin8 is my fav.

I use 50# original Power Pro for frogs and 80# for punching.

Never had a break off at the knot or line but I'm constantly checking both.

Never tried an 8 strand as I've never had a reason too.

I have sunline fx2 frogging and flipping braid in 65 and 80. They're 2 tone, blue and black. They work great.

Maybe the 65# is better but I've had break off issues with the 50# of this line... I also find it noisy through guides too.

I'm going back to Sufix 832 this season. This one has never failed me.

The last few years I simply buy whatever braid is on clearance some place and I rarely have issues with any of the major brands. I still like Power Pro and Tuf Line braids, but I have purchased Sunline, Daiwa etc...It all seems good to me, I used to use 832 and it was a good line.

Tuf Line is a good line and usually priced really competitive. Plus its made in the USA which is kind of nice.

I use Sufix and PowerPro 65 lb. A lot of places I fish have thick slop and a lot have tons of lily pads.

You are right, Suffix is great. I have that neon colored 832 on a few reels also. No complaints, very smooth line.

I have Daiwa J-Braid which I like, it just bleeds die everywhere in the 8 carrier version which was on sale at DSG.

To be honest my most purchased like is USA braid from Walmart in Orange, it was Power Pro before that, I use a lot of brands.

50 pound Seaguar Smackdown is what I use. Never had any problems with breakoffs, fading, fraying, or wind knots. This is simply amazing braided line!

I'll be using Power Pro Spectra, 50# on my Fuego. Depending on how thick the weeds and slop are, you might want to go up to 65#.

Power Pro, Suffix and Tuffline I only buy if any of them go on sale. For frogging and the rare times I punch, I use 50lbs.

Thanks for the replies , since braid lasts awhile I'll look at a little higher quality braid (such as Seaguar Smackdown) otherwise good to know brands like PP , Tuff Line , etc. are being used .

Another vote for Sunline FX2. Been using it for some time now and still haven't found one I like better.

The tried and true 50lb original power pro. Not the quietest line, but have NEVER broke this line unless it was my fault.

Smackdown for frogs, flippin briad for flipping. I'd use Smackdown if I was going to use 1 for both.

I have similar flipping and frogging set ups....Fuego CT's and Fury 735's. I use 50lb original Power Pro on them.

I believe it was Tom (WRB) that mentioned Fins. I've got yellow 60# Original PRT on my dedicated frog reel. May drop down to 50# next time line needs changing. I have a hard time believing line color has any bearing on bites...especially in those conditions. I like being able to see my line.

I just received samples of 3 other braids from Fins to try. Windtamer, 40G and XS in various colors...blue, pink, hot orange, chartreuse and yellow. Already had blue 45# 40G on a reel for using locally on my Toadface, but only managed to get out once with it before it got too cold for me to be out.
