Affordable frog/jig/flipping/pitching rod? 2025

Hey guys, need some input. Wanted to add a H power rod to my lineup for frogs/jigs/pitch/flipping..... currently only have MH power and lower.

Really want to keep it under $150 though, I'm a stickler for price and refuse to spend a lot of money.

Just for example, I fished the majority of the season using a $14 MH 2 piece baitcasting rod this year........so when I say affordable I actually mean cheap. (Don't laugh too much, I flipped a couple hundred bass with a rod that costs less than a case of beer).

Suggestions?

Although you stated that you want a Heavy power, I would suggest a MH rated for 1/4 - 1.5 ounces. The 7'3" MH *** Black is a great rod for 130$. that is what i use for frogs, with 50 lb braid in everything but ultra heavy cover. A 7'6" MH or H is good too. Check out the dobyns fury or cabbalas tournament zx which is on sale for 70$

Dobyns Fury 735 would be perfect for the applications you listed, the Fury line is a good value at $110, even better if you buy it with a 10% off Tackle Warehouse gift card or find a gently used one.

Irod Fiber ($110) or Genesis II ($150) Fred's Magic Stick. Difference is in the components. Blank is the same. The best frog rod IMO. A great all around rod with good tip and tons of backbone. You won't be disappointed. A lot of guys use it for all the applications you are looking for.

I use the 7' H Fiber. Great tip for frogs

$89.99 if you buy a gift card first. I recommend the OG Tatula 7'4" H/F frog rod. Pitches/flips very well. Can be had now for right around $100 tyd.

For that price you can pick up a used dobyns champion 735. Great rod for the money. I wouldn’t pay full retail for it but definitely worth $150 and can be had for that regularly in the used market if you keep your eye open.

I use a 7' 3" H/F Ethos Micro for frogging but it makes a good pitching rod too. I found 2 of them on sale for $27 each but they're only $80 full price.

I rarely spend more than $100 on a rod anymore. Many of today's "budget rods" feel and fish like $150+ rods from 15 years ago.

Some of my favorite rods under $100 are:

Daiwa Aird X, and Fuego's

Abu Garcia Vengenace, and Vendetta's

Berkley Lightning Rods, and Lightning Rod Shocks

All of those rods are offered in various lengths from 7'-7'6" in H power that are excellent for frogging/flipping/heavy cover work.

My least favorite of the bunch is the 7'6" Lightning Rod Shock, it's very heavy, and is better A-rig/large moving bait rod.

I second that Cabela's rod. I have the Frog model and paid the full $100. It's a bargain at this sale price. The frog model I have is 7'3" Hvy-Fast and it's almost stiff enough to shoot billiards with. I imagine the Flipping model which is Hvy-X Fast is likewise a pretty stiff rod. These won't cast lighter worms and jigs very well. So if I wanted to do all three techniques with one rod, I'd get the Jig/Worm model and spool it with 30# braid. If you already have a worm rod, I'd get the Frog.

Another vote here for the Dobyns 735. I was going to recommend the Sierra series. It's a good blend of quality and affordable.

The Dobyns Fury and Sierra, as well as the Powell and iRod options all seem to get a lot of love in your price range, likely not a bad choice among those three.

I know you’re super budget concious and totally respect that. But a rod for pitching and flipping into cover is one where sensitivity counts so consider that.

Phenix just released a new rod series series that’s right at your price point or a smidge above called the Feather. They have a 7’1” Heavy and a 7’3” Extra Heavy option. On paper the rods look very nice and Phenix is known for good builds.

Another budget option I ran across is the Daiwa DX Frog rod on TW. They have it on sale for 90 and if you do the gift card thing you could get that down a bit more. Specs look good and TackleTour did a review of one of theses sticks awhile back in the cranking series. This was a TW exclusive line.

Id also suggest the St Croix Mojo Bass line right in your price range as well.

These are just some other ideas, I’ve not used any of the rods above, and you’ve got some good recommendations from folks who have.

At that price point, I'd throw the 7'4" H/F St. Croix Mojo Bass into the mix. It'll handle the frogs and slop well and although it might be a little overkill for a jig, something like a heavy football jig would be a possible use.

I have the 7' 3" H/F TCS and it's a very nice stick. I use it mainly for jigs but it's also listed as a frog rod, which I'm sure it would do nicely. You can find them online for right around $100 with a little looking.

Recently got a daiwa dx type LT frog rod 7'5" H. Rated 1/2 to 1.5. Very nice rod, with some flavor. Used it on a few outings before it got too cold. The full cork handle is sweet. Didn't take long to get used to. I bought it for $150 originally, but is now on sale at TW for $89. Shame on me, but I'd pay $150 for it again.

When you say under $150 do you mean just the rod, or the rod-reel combo?

Thanks for the advice everyone...... settled on the 7'6" H lighting shock. Came in the mail today and it's EXACTLY what I needed.

If you're wondering about the odd furniture I had it shipped to the doctor's office I work for.............what the wife doesn't know can't hurt me!

There's nothing wrong with the Lightning line of rods. I have three of the base LR rods. Two are more than a decade old. They've whooped a lot of bass.

This is exactly what I would recommend as well! You can find them used for around the $125 - $150 range and it will be a great rod for what you are looking for.
