Whats largest size rod you will use for fishing out of your kayak ?
I used a 7' 6" Rage to fish docks last fall without any problems and will be fishing my swimbait rod (7' 11") this year.
Do u think that the 7'11" rod will be to big ? Cause I was thinking about getting one for swimbait fishing.
This will be my first full year kayak fishing so I'm not an expert on the subject but I don't see how it would be an issue unless I'm fishing around lots of cover or overhanging trees for me to hit the rod on. Figuring out how to cast with the long handle in a kayak could be interesting but I'm sure it can be done.
What are u going to be throwing on your 7'11" rod ?
Swimbaits
What brand I was thinking of getting a Okuma Guide Select "a" Series Swimbait Casting Rod
It's a custom built rod but the Guide Select is supposed to be a great rod for the money. I've held a few and they seem to be very nice.
Ya what are ur favorite swimbaits
I like the glide baits, Deps 175 Slide Swimmer and Bullshooter Jr, Savage Gear Glide Swimmer and Shine Glide, R2S S Waver. I seem to catch my biggest swimbait fish on the MS Slammer. The Bull Shad does very well on smallmouth for me. I don't fish the soft baits a lot but the Real Prey baits and the 68 Hudd have been good for me.
6-6 for me. My local lake has trees so I keep it short to avoid hang ups. I feel the smaller rods give me more control while sitting. I can't stand on my yak.
I want a MS Slammer but they cost so much
Caliyak what is your local lake
It's a topwater bait for the most part and floats at rest. Use good line and check it and your knots often and you'll never lose it. Even if you happen to cast it off you should be able to retrieve it. They're also pretty cheap in the swimbait world.
Don't they cost like $50 or something near that
Depends on the size. They can be over 50 or under 50. I have a 7" that was around $40, and a 9" that was around $55. I've never come close to losing either and have caught bunches of fish on them. You can tell the 7" is pretty chewed up
It also accounted for my biggest swimbait fish ever this last fall.
Ya they definitely look worth it and those are some quality bass for sure. What knot do you use ?
A Palomar or SDJ.
So do u mostly fish floating swimbaits ?
No, I mostly fish the glide baits that are usually slow sink baits.
Have u ever use the slow sink bbz-1 ?
Yes. It works but it was far from my favorite and I no longer own one. If I were to buy another one it would be a floater instead of the slow sink that I use to have. I caught some good fish with it though.
What are glide baits exactly
Basically baits that are fishing in kind of a walk the dog style retrieve but subsurface. The Deps Slide Swimmers, Roman Made Mother and Negotiator, Megabass I-Slide, and Gancraft Jointed Claw are all popular glide baits. The River2Sea S-Waver, Savage Gear Glide Swimmer and Shine Glides are much more affordable versions of glide baits.
Do u fish swimbaits all year around ?
Yes, some of my best swimbait fishing all year is during the winter months. I'm mainly fishing them in power plant lakes that have warmer water though, but those fish key heavily are large gizzard shad.
Can you just use any kind of swimbait u want all year around or are some for specific seasons ?
Just like other baits, I prefer the more subtle baits that can be fished slower in the winter months. The rest of the year, as much as I hate this phrase, you have to let the fish tell you what they want. Sometimes the aggressive, obnoxious baits will get the strikes, sometimes it's the subtle and very lifelike that trigger them.
Ya that trying to figure out what they want is annoying some days but it's whatever
Well for stained water do u think I should use noisier baits ?
Most of what I fish is stained water. I use the same baits that I do in clear water. Baitfish don't become brighter or noisier in stained water than they are in clear water.
That's true never thought about it that way I'll message u if I have any more questions thanks for the help
all personal preference, but i don't have a rod over 7' long. i've tried, but did not like anything longer than 7'.
Same here, Heavy rods at 7, MH 6'6"

Use whatever size rod is comfortable to you.
As a kayak fisherman, I don't like rods longer than
6'6". I prefer rods in the 5'9" to 6'3" range as they
work better for me and my style. I do a lot of close-
up casting in areas with overhangs, etc., that I feel
a longer rod would be unruly for.
It is a personal thing as I know plenty here swear
by rods 6'10" and longer. As well, I usually lay my
rods down in front of me, but will sometimes stick
them in a crate (with DIY PVC rod holders) behind
me.

If you use adjustable rod holders that let you stow the rods horizontal to the water long rods aren't a problem around low hanging branches.
i have used everything from 6'6" bait casters to 9' fly rods and they all work fine. it is really a matter of preference. the advent of the ability to stand and having a raised seat has really eliminated many of the "problems" people had in the past with longer rods while fishing out of a kayak.
It's simple- long rod, short handle
But they are very hard to find.

Good question. I generally like to use 6'7" - 7' and carry four or five rods at all times. The longest rod I will bring is 7' 6", and only on certain outings. This is due to skinny water tree cover, hugging banks, downed trees, brush, etc. If I felt the need I could use longer but only on open water - which is probably about 30% of the time for me. In my everyday yak outings, I am navigating tree covered skinny water, so when I head into tight spots I take my rods out of the holders and lash them to either side of the yak with the tips in the rod tip protector on my bow; they bend and fit the side of boat perfectly. Anything longer than 7'6" doesn't fit well onto the side. My yak is the Jackson Cuda 12, which is 12'6"' long, BTW.
I only use 6' 6" rods out of my yack. It's a all around perfect size for me.
