need to equip my boat with a new trolling motor. Ive always had off brand "pond prowlers" but am going to spend some money to get what I want. so which is better?
In my father in laws boat he runs a Minn Kota maxxum trolling motor and we both like it a lot. I have never fished in a boat with a Motorguide. I am sure with all the pro's I see with them on their boats they have to be pretty good.
Pick one and I am sure you will be happy.
I'm a Minn Kota guy. Lifetime warranty on the composite shaft. Can't say that about Motorguide
I have always had Minn Kota's. Right now I have a Traxxis SC, which has the digital maximizer that is supposed to help battery life.
Ford or Chevrolet, which is "better"?
Have used both, no problems with either.
There was a thread on here not too long ago and there was a few people talking about how the minn Kota cable steer models need new cables a lot. That said I've owned four minn Kota tiller models with zero issues except for one with saltwater use (previous owner) I do know one thing the composite shafts on my minn Kota were bullet proof multiple wacks with a hammer didn't phase them I now own a motorguide just because I got a good deal on it and it feels the same to me except this one is cable steer.
Minn Kota man standing by, Maxxum on my bow.
When it came to choosing after reading its a "chevy vs Ford" debate. I thought the Minn Kota looked better style wise to me.

What he said!
I have always been a MG guy. I can't get used to the look of the gynormous MK foot control and they put the power button on the wrong side of it anyway.
Been fishing with Minn Kota for years now. Love and live by them. No issues to speak of here. That said, we all get conditioned to the foot pedals on them so see if you can find a dealer of each, and just put your foot on each separate pedal and see which you like more. (Minn Kota has power button on the right, Motorguide has it on the left)

Sorry to correct you, but the MK button is on the left and MG is on the right. I have a MK and the only thing I don't like about it is the plastic case on the head. I've had it break on me and my trolling motor guy said he sees this a lot. MG has a a metal case here instead. Other than that, love the MK.

How the heck did I screw that one up haha
Both have their fans and for good reason.
All things being equal, I'd go with whichever manufacturer has an "Authorized Service Center" closest to your local.

I would have said Minn Kota because of the Ipilot, but Motorguide now has gps integrated into there motors aswell.
MotorGuide here. It's hard to go wrong between the two as they both offer comparable features in whatever price class you're looking at, and both manufacturers build a quality product.
FWIW, rumor has it that the BPS Prowler motors are made by MotorGuide (can't substantiate this, but I've heard it from numerous people including BPS employees.) Those things are built like a tank. I have an old tiller steer one for the canoe that's gone overboard a handful of times while plugged in, crashed into countless rocks, and seen plenty of saltwater use (freshwater motor) and it still works like it did on day one. One of the best buys I've ever made.
I have had the same MG, for 14 yrs now. The only thing I have had to change once is the power switch.
Minn Kota because of the Ipilot

Not any more, Motor Guide has a version of that now called the X5 with Pinpoint GPS
I have had both and still like the Minn Kota better.
My last two Rangers were ordered with a Motor Guide. My next Ranger will have a Minn Kota.
I've had both and bassin' life is just better with Minn Kota! I have had no mechanical problems with either brand but I prefer Minn Kota foot control over the Motor Guides. Maximizer has been great, they are more quiet and will go through more junk than Motor Guide.
I've got this thing with my little boy, where when we get back into some slop I'll turn around and look where we came from and we both say....."Only with Minn Kota!" He gets a big kick out of that.

Ford. It ain't really that difficult. They pay their bills at least.
MK hands down if you fish in the slop. The prop design is far superior on the MK for heavy vegetation.

What he said! Minnkotas have gotten better over the years than what they used to be, but IMO Motorguides are better. I like the stainless steel shaft on my Tour 82 and the Gator Mounts help to streamline any wires you run for transducers, hydrowaves, etc. Also, take it for what it's worth, in a club tournament I fished in last year on the Mississippi with very strong current four boats had relatively new trolling motors burn out. Could be a coincidence, but all 4 of them were Minnkotas.
What kind of boat are you putting the trolling motor on? Are you doing a bow mount or a transom mount? What size trolling motor do you need/want? Me, I tend to favor MinnKota for a couple of reasons. Once, I've met the regional Minn Kota rep a couple of times, and he was nice to me when he didn't have to be. Once when I was a rookie co-angler doing BFL, he took me practice fishing for a day. Secondly, I was co-angler at a tournament on Grand Lake once and the day was spoiled when my boaters trolling motor broke (it was a Motor Guide)
When I bought my boat, I put a MinnKota on it. Minn Kota trolling motors will break, especially when you leave the motor down as you attempt to drive the boat onto the trailer. Other than that, I've smacked my trolling motor into countless obstacles and it still works.
I prefer Minn Kota for when I motorize my kayak. I had a Prowler (MotorGuide) before, though more powerful, I prefer the way the MK handles, as well as the composite shaft.
A guy outside Richmond, Virginia who repairs trolling motors and props says go to with Motor Guide.
He says they are much more stable on the boat than the MinnKotas.
I will go with his honest and impartial opinion as he works on the units all the time.

I replaced a Motorguide electric motor with a Minn Kota on 3 different boats I owned.
With the MotorGuide that came stocked on my last boat, I was lucky to move 10-ft in maidencane (K-grass) without bogging down.
Also really nice is the Minn Kota 'Spot-Lock' that holds the boat on spot in water too deep for the Minn Kota Talon (E-anchor).

I have a MG pro series 80 on my boat with the safari prop, Have no problems going through thick vegetation with it, the stock prop not so much.
I have had both, and minn kota has been my best, never let me down on an all electric boat. motorguides props just don't cut it for me.

What's wrong with the props? Not as effective in vegetation or too noisy? Curious since I pulled the trigger on a MG

Minn Kotas props are much better through the veggies than MG. Youll see a lot more guys down in florida running MK for that reason in the heavy weeds. Open water they are both pretty good
Thanks
all the pluses and minuses, pros and cons have been listed here...
I think it boils down to what pedal you like. go play with both petals and your choice will be made.
both of them have love it or hate it petals, IMO
Minn Kota, there is just no reason for anything else.
Started with MG and overall, they've been good. Had a few issues with one but it was'nt anything I could'nt fix. If I ever need another one, though, I might just give MK a try.
MG finally wised up and introduced a composite shaft on the new Xi5
Thanks for all of the input, I ended up going with the Minn Kota Edge, so far I am extremely pleased with the performance and price! I guess we will see how long it last.
Your right, slonezp, I remember when MG was poking fun at MK because of their ''plastic'' shafts and now look.
I think my boat is due for a new trolling motor. Thanks for the comments everyone.
FWIW my 98 Sea Ark has the original 45lb thrust motor on it. Only thing that ever broke was the plug and that was from stepping on it while plugged in.
I'll probably go with Minn Kota just to give them a go. I need a 65lb thrust. Won't like having to buy two new batteries, but I think it's time.
Absolutely MK. I just bought an xi5and the gps doesn't work. Pretty poor purchase on my part

Return it.
I think you are right. Better to return it and try MK
Minn Kota is kicking Motorguides butt, and it looks like Humminbird is kicking Lowrance's butt! you can tell this from certain other sites, on whats for sale, and what is being bought. MK and Humminbird working together with linking their TM's and Humminbird's depth finders/gps's are killing the competition!

Both are great. Buy the one that you can get, that does what you want it to do, for less $$$...Or that has the features you want.
Ignore all brand blind static and noise that says anything else.
I've run Minn Kota because:
I have hundreds, if not thousands of hours on my Minn Kotas, no issues that have not been user error...and I had friends running Motor Guide that can report exactly the same.
Six of one, half dozen of the other.
One word.... Ultrex

You're on a roll. You sign up revive a 4 year old thread to bash a brand then start your own thread to bash the brand again. So your TM wasn't working right. Return it, it's under warranty. Have you looked at complaints about MK? There's plenty. Both are good brands, no need to bash either. Have you ever heard that saying s@!* happens?
